An Introduction to Sustainable Agriculture
prepared by Ecological Agriculture Projects Macdonald College of McGill University June, 1989
Introduction
Sustainable agriculture is both a philosophy and a system of farming. It has its roots in a set of values that reflects an awareness of both ecological and social realities. It involves design and management procedures that work with natural processes to conserve all resources, minimize waste and environmental damage, while maintaining or improving farm profitability. Working with natural soil processes is of particular importance. Sustainable agriculture systems are designed to take maximize advantage of existing soil nutrient and water cycles, energy flows, and soil organisms for food production. As well, such systems aim to produce food that is nutritious, without being contaminated with products that might harm human health.
An evolving approach to agriculture
Sustainable agriculture has been practiced for many decades and encompasses a tremendous number of different approaches described by many different names. To this point, most of these approaches have largely been limited to the substitution of environmentally More significant advances can be expected, however, as a result of developments in the science and art of agroecosystem design and management. The names of the major schools of thought in sustainable agriculture are outlined in Figure 1, and are classified according to whether their operating principles are based on concepts of "efficiency", "substition", or "redesign".

A History of Sustainable Agriculture
The term organic was first widely used in the USA by J.I. Rodale, founder of Rodale Press, in the 1950s. Rodale was both the popularizer of the term organic (and by implication notions of sustainability), but also, in the scientific community, the inspiration for the denigration of the term. Rodale failed to convince scientists of the validity of his approach because of his reliance on what were perceived to be outrageous unscientific claims of organic farming's benefits. This was unfortunate as a number of scientists in the USA and Europe were investigating and promoting sustainability in agriculture at the time, most notably Sir Albert Howard and William Albrecht. The scientific and governmental fascination with using agrichemicals, monoculture, and specialized equipment for food production severely constrained professional interest in questions of sustainability. One other important historical influence on the development of sustainable agriculture was the research on the connection between the condition of the soil, food quality, and human health. Some members of the medical community in the UK had been performing clinical research experiments on the subject since early in the 20th century. This community was of the view that human health was greatly negatively affected by poor soil management practices in agriculture, particularly poor organic matter management.

Photographs, like everything else we see, are fugitive illusions derived from light. It causes mist to rise, wind to blow, and rain to water the land. Scattering, sunlight makes the sky blue, and striking chlorophyll, it makes green plants grow. Animals harvest its energy as blades and stems and seeds. Gas, oil, coal, plastics, minerals, and metals, all are vibrating particles of light. The atmosphere, the oceans, the very rocks of the planet are the distillate dross of our star.

Cuba: A Successful Case Study of Sustainable Agriculture
by PETER M. ROSSET
www.foodfirst.org O ur global food system is in the midst of a multifaceted crisis, with ecological, economic, and social dimensions. To overcome that crisis, political and social changes are needed to allow the widespread development of alternatives. Ecologically, there are impacts of industrial-style farming on groundwater through pesticide and fertilizer runoff, on biodiversity through the spread of monoculture and a narrowing genetic base, and on the very capacity of agroecosystems to be productive into the future. Economically, production costs rise as farmers are forced to use ever more expensive machines and farm chemicals, while crop prices continue a several-decade-long downward trend, causing a cost-price squeeze which has led to the loss of untold tens of millions of farmers worldwide to bankruptcies. Socially, we have the concentration of farmland in fewer and fewer hands as low crop prices make farming on a small scale unprofitable (despite higher per acre total productivity of small farms), and agribusiness corporations extend their control over more and more basic commodities.

Sustainable Agriculture Initiative
The Sustainable Agriculture Initiative is a new joint initiative of the International Foundation for Science (IFS) and the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA). For further information about about CODESRIA please refer to www.codesria.org
The objective of the CODESRIA-IFS Sustainable Agriculture Initiative is to stimulate multidisciplinary agricultural research in Sub-Saharan Africa that generates new knowledge and appropriate technologies for improved natural resource management for sustainable agriculture, and thereby contribute to the reduction of hunger and malnutrition. This objective will be reached through a new granting programme that supports promising young African researchers working in multidisciplinary teams. Call for Proposals
Hence, IFS and CODESRIA invite research grant applications containing high-quality research proposals from team members that will address the theme of sustainable agriculture for food production in Africa. Research projects should last between one and three years. Teams should be self-forming and may consist of young researchers from one institution or from multiple institutions. Multidisciplinary projects are strongly encouraged. Teams may be international; however, IFS and CODESRIA will not provide funding for team-formation activities. Teams should generally consist of 2-5 researchers and a Team Coordinator. The IFS-CODESRIA Sustainable Agriculture Initiative expects to support 15-18 teams annually during a three year period (January 2004 - December 2006).

Scholarships and Sustainable Agriculture Training in Uganda Welcome to Kulika! Kulika is a charitable organisation based in the United Kingdom and Uganda, providing educational scholarships and grants to Ugandan students and also 'on the ground' sustainable agriculture training to farmers in Uganda.
Uganda, located in the heart of East Africa, is emerging from a troubled past to become a strong African nation, but poverty is still the reality for very many people. For over twenty years, Kulika has been providing resources for Ugandan people to gain the skills and knowledge needed for them to be able to take control of their futures, and that of their country. Through our Scholarship Programme and the Sustainable Agriculture Training Programme Kulika provides opportunities for Ugandan people to gain the necessary skills and knowledge not only to improve their own livelihoods, but to contribute to the development of the nation as a whole.
