sustainable agriculture and organic farming volunteer abroad program in Tanzania, Africa. Tanzania sustainable agriculture Program.
http://www.globalservicecorps.org/tanzania/agriculture.html

Tanzania Sustainable Agriculture Program
Global Service Corps initiated its village-based programs in 1994 in Kenya, teaching biointensive agriculture to community members. Over the course of three years, GSC assisted in the initiation of over 2000 community garden plots as well as a community demonstration plot and training center. GSC then replicated this highly successful program in Machakos (in Kenya's Eastern Province). GSC moved its East Africa Program to Tanzania in 2001. Volunteers apply the Kenyan model to Tanzania by first learning, then educating community members about sustainable small-scale farming. Volunteers and community members then work together to create organic farming plots. Sustainable Agriculture Program participants work in collaboration with the GSC Tanzania HIV/AIDS Program participants to educate HIV/AIDS victims, their families and orphans about organic small-scale farming. They create organic mini-farms to benefit these members of the community as an environmentally sustainable source of immune system-building fruits and vegetables and a viable source of income. GSC promotes biointensive agriculture (BIA), a specialized form of organic agriculture involving the use of double-dug beds, locally available crops, organic compost materials, crop diversification, intensive planting, and water harvesting. Biointensive agriculture is a much more viable option for small-scale farmers than is large-scale farming, which requires expensive chemicals, fertilizers and machinery.

Our Mission
A Rainforest Alliance-certified coffee farm may have a varied landscape that includes a community watershed, forest reserves, streams, and worker housing and schools.

The mission of the sustainable agriculture program is to protect ecosystems and the people and wildlife that live within them by developing and implementing best management practices and standards for commodity crops, providing incentives to farmers to meet those standards, and encouraging the marketing industries and consumers to support farmers who are making on-farm improvements toward sustainability. Farmers, companies, cooperatives, and landowners that participate in our programs meet comprehensive, rigorous standards for protecting biodiversity conservation and sustainability by integrating productive agriculture, conservation, workers, and local communities. By verifying that certified farms are employing best management practices, the Rainforest Alliance is helping reduce the environmental impacts and increase the social benefits of tropical agriculture. Calling it "realigning research and development investments," multinational ag corporation Monsanto announced on May 10 it is abandoning research and development of genetically-engineered wheat. This represents a victory for U.S. wheat farmers, who have raised concerns about the wheat's safety and profitability. "If Monsanto is in fact abandoning research and development of its genetically-engineered wheat variety, this would represent a major victory for North American wheat farmers who have followed the market principle that 'the customer is always right,'" said Dennis Olson, Director of the Institute's Trade and Agriculture Project.

50. Sustainable Agriculture Tour -- Erosion Control Structures
Diversion terraces, grassed waterways, surface inlets, and hedgerows are the most common structures used for soil conservation.
http://www.peisland.com/agrtour/erosion.html
Photo: A diversion terrace breaking up surface runoff from the upper field to the lower one. Diversion terraces, grassed waterways, surface inlets, and hedgerows are the most common structures used for soil conservation by Island farmers. A drive by many fields will show abundant use of these methods.
Diversion terraces are used where the slope length of a field is greater than the accepted limit for cross slope farming or strip cropping. Terraces break up long slopes into a series of shorter ones. Diversion terraces will transport substantial amounts of runoff and must be permanently vegetated.
Photo: A good example of a grassed waterway Grassed waterways are broad shallow channels that are protected against erosion by a permanent grass cover. They are used to control gully erosion where water collects and flows through natural depressions in the field. The may also serve as outlets for diversion terraces. Ideally grassed waterways are gently sloped to control water flow speeds. Occasionally, grade control structures are required to ensure the stability of the waterway.
Grassed waterways are the least expensive method of gully erosion control but they do reduce the amount of land in production. A surface inlet and underground piping system is an option that minimizes the loss of land and avoids some of the inconveniences associated with waterways. Earthen berms or dams can be constructed at strategic locations within fields to intercept heavy runoff. The water can then be discharged through a surface inlet and underground piping system to a safe and convenient outlet location.

http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~tselby/
Topics in Sustainable Agriculture Index: The Assault on Alternative Agriculture Statement of Purpose: Needs of Sustainable Agriculture: The Promise of Sustainable Agriculture: ... Links: The Assault on Alternative Agriculture There is a battle waging within agriculture today, a battle that is pitting large segments of agribusiness against the sustainable agriculture movement. Opponents of sustainable agriculture control much of the media and therefore their opinions dominate the debate and the minds of the masses. They assert that if farmers stop using chemicals (that they just happen to produce) the world would starve. They cite biased economic studies, such as the one conducted by Thomas Foster (an agricultural economist for the Tennessee Valley Authority and the National Fertilizer Development Center) in which he claims "Taking chemicals out of agriculture could mean cutting exports in half, 217,000 fewer jobs, rampant inflation, and a huge increase in food costs. . . Yields generally fell in all scenarios while costs per unit of crop increased in all cases." ( Omaha World-Herald 15 November 1990, 19). This type of economic study (even if totally correct) is extremely irresponsible. It is obvious that the conversion away from chemically based agriculture "is a slow, methodical, step-at-a-time procedure"(p.94
