With that mandate in mind, how can we not utilize sustainable energy and practice environmental leadership whenever possible in our national parks?

WELCOME TO THE WEBSITE FOR THE
GREENING OF THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
"... The service thus established shall promote and regulate the use of the Federal areas known as national parks, monuments and reservations hereinafter specified by such means and measures as conform to the fundamental purpose of the said parks, monuments, and reservations, which purpose is to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by which means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations."
This legislation established the National Park Service in 1916 and set forth the mandate that the service shall manage it's areas in such a manner that future generations will be able to enjoy them unimpaired. With that mandate in mind, how can we not utilize sustainable energy and practice environmental leadership whenever possible in our national parks?
GREEN ENERGY IN THE NATIONAL PARKS
A workshop held in Shepardstown W.V., in June, 1998 created a working relationship between the Department of Energy and the Department of the Interior and initiated "Green Parks: Making the National Parks a Showcase for an Energy Efficient Future". On April 27th. 1999, a memorendum of understanding between the Secretary of Energy and the Secertary of the Interior was signed which officially inaugurated the joint program which aims to promote the use of energy efficient and renewable energy technologies and practices in our National Parks, and to educate the visiting public about these efforts. Energy and Environment for Sustainable Development Energy and environment are essential for sustainable development. The poor are disproportionately affected by environmental degradation and lack of access to clean, affordable energy services. These issues are also global as climate change, loss of biodiversity and ozone layer depletion cannot be addressed by countries acting alone. UNDP helps countries strengthen their capacity to address these challenges at global, national and community levels, seeking out and sharing best practices, providing innovative policy advice and linking partners through pilot projects that help poor people build sustainable livelihoods.
UNDP's Energy and Environment Practice works in six priority areas: Frameworks and strategies for sustainable development
UNDP seeks to develop country capacity to manage the environment and natural resources; integrate environmental and energy dimensions into poverty reduction strategies and national development frameworks; and strengthen the role of communities and of women in promoting sustainable development.

Prospects for Sustainable Energy - A Critical Assessment
Edward S Cassedy
Cambridge University Press 2000
Hardback 194 pages ISBN 521 63120 3 Fossil fuels are a finite resource, and their continued use as the world's dominant energy supply may be damaging the environment. Future use of alternative methods of energy supply is inescapable, and this book explores the historical origins, technical features, marketability, and environmental impacts of the complete range of sustainable energy technologies: solar, biomass, wind, hydropower, geothermal power, ocean-energy sources, solar-derived hydrogen fuel, and energy storage. The aim is to inform policy analysts and decision makers of the options available for sustainable energy production. The book is therefore written so as to be accessible to an audience from a broad range of backgrounds and scientific training for those interested in environmental studies, energy economics, energy policy and engineering. Following a preface, the contents are as follows: Part I. Introduction:

Affordable Sustainability Technical Assistance
The Affordable Sustainability Technical Assistance (ASTA) project provided project-specific, sustainable design technical assistance to HOME participating jurisdictions and subgrantees that serve the needs of the nation's poorest families. By focusing outreach efforts on Community Development Housing Organizations (CHDO) that receive HOME funds, ASTA assisted community housing organizations that are generally understaffed and have limited in-house technical resources. Funds for this service were awarded to NCAT through Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) SuperNOFA process.
The ultimate goal of the ASTA Project was to help make cost-effective sustainable design practices a normal part of affordable housing development, modernization, and rehabilitation programs, building new affordable houses so they use a minimum of nonrenewable energy, produce a minimum of pollution, and cost a minimum of energy dollars, while increasing the comfort, health, and safety of the people who live in them. The ASTA project developed a useful resource website and several publications. NCAT Photovoltaic System

ENERGY FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, OR SUSTAINABLE ENERGY?: SOME POLICY TENSIONS AND SUGGESTED APPROACHES R R ALDERSON Head of Division, Energy and Environment Department of Industry, Science and Resources In this session I propose to identify some key issues relating to the role of energy in achieving the goal of ecologically sustainable development, and will highlight some key policy tensions that arise in pursuit of the ESD objective; tensions which are often trivialised in debate on this subject. I will then suggest some primary policy vehicles which might be drawn on to achieve the changes many of us agree are necessary.
