Sustainable Energy
It is now widely accepted that current patterns of power generation and utilisation are unsustainable, and that there is a need to radically transform how we as a society perceive and achieve our objectives in this regard, particularly in the light of the serious threats presented by climate change. The concept of Renewable Energy conjures up images of solar panels and wind turbines generating electricity without damaging the environment and without further releasing the climate altering potential of fossil fuels. Yet the need to use energy in more efficient and effective ways is essential to compliment the development of these - and other - renewable energy resources.
These pages look at the European and National perspective on sustainable and renewable energy along with details of the work of the North West Regional Assembly in this field, and in particular, the work of the Assembly in leading on the development of a Sustainable Energy Strategy for the North West.

Sustainable Energy in the North West
Regional Strategy , which aims to guide the development of a competitive and sustainable economy, states within its policies on business and the environment:
"The North West must make its contribution to reducing the scale of, and the risks from, global warming, carbon dioxide emissions and climate change. The region can contribute by reducing its demand for energy through conservation and other measures, and by developing new sustainable sources of energy supply. The NWDA will therefore investigate, with the environmental agencies, the scope for developing alternative energy sources in the North West."
The Department of Trade and Industry has carried out a series of studies into the development of renewable energy across the UK, one of its main objectives to assess the contribution each region could make towards the national target. The previously-mentioned study concluded that although the North West currently has only a small capacity for renewable energy, the potential exists to develop it substantially by 2010, to the extent that the amount of electricity generated from renewable sources would be increased from 1.3% to 8.5% - a target that could quite conceivably be surpassed if technological advancements continue apace and sufficient political will is brought to bear on the issue in the region.

        Energy Innovation Fund (QSEIF)
The Queensland Government through the Queensland Sustainable Energy Innovation Fund (QSEIF) seeks to promote innovation in energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies and practices.
The fund seeks projects from business or the community to establish Queensland as a market leader in energy innovation and sustainable energy.
Funds are focused on innovative projects dealing with research, development, demonstration or commercialisation of energy efficiency or renewable energy.
Applications were called for the sixth funding round on 18 June 2003, seeking projects complying with the guidelines for this round. Selected projects in this round were formally announced on 29 April 2004.
For applications that are selected for funding, a contract is developed setting out terms and conditions for financial assistance and a schedule of project milestones. No funds are paid out until a contract is agreed and signed by the State and the selected applicant.

The growing awareness of the impact of coal burning on the environment, particularly on greenhouse gas emissions, has encouraged moves to find alternative clean energy sources.
Hydro-electric power
The major nonfossil fuel source of energy in NSW is the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme. In 1994-95 the Snowy Mountains Scheme met 6% of the total electricity demand in NSW and other hydroelectric facilities another 0.3%. In 1993 94 these figures were 6.6% and 0.5%, respectively.) Three private hydro-electric plants have a total capacity of 50 MW, an increase over the 25 MW capacity reported in 1995 (DoE data provided to the EPA 1997; EPA 1995a). Government approvals have also been given for new small hydroelectric power stations at the Burrendong and Copeton dams, and there are plans for three more at Pindari, Split Rock and Dapto.
Landfill gas (already mentioned), wood and wood waste, and bagasse are all forms of biomass. Wood and bagasse accounted for 3.8% of final energy consumption in NSW in 1994-95, a significant increase from 2.1% in 1984-85, with consumption mainly by households (93%) for space heating (DoE data provided to the EPA 1997). The inventory of greenhouse gas emissions in NSW and the ACT for 1990 estimated the amount of fuel wood burned in 1990 at 1,754 kilotonnes of dry matter. This resulted in the emission of 2,638 gigagrams of carbon dioxide

The show was busy, talking to other visitors I was given the impression that the show is growing each year and that this year there is a noticeable increase in the activity and impetus reflecting perhaps the growing confidence of the industry and interest in environmental issues.

Overview of SEI: ...Back to Projects and Activities The Sustainable Energy Institute was incorporated in January 2000 with the aims of improving public awareness and understanding worldwide of the debates over future energy supply and demand options and their implications, and enhancing democratic decision making on energy technologies. SEI was approved by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization in June 2000. The Institute focuses attention on: a) Potential technological solutions to meeting energy needs, including energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, nuclear power, carbon sequestration and other technologies, as well as alternative transportation fuels and smart growth strategies. b) The prospects for each technology to contribute to increasing future energy supply or reducing demand in a manner consistent with sustainable growth requirements (i.e., satisfying requirements for public health and safety, environmental protection, global peace and stability and affordability).
