Foreword
This study was commissioned not quite two years before the World Summit in Johannesburg – the global conference in the summer of 2002 that hopes to constitute a breakthrough for the model of sustainable development, which is a focus of the Heinrich Boell Foundation’s international cooperation on environmental policy.
The goal of the study was to analyze the structures of the Heinrich Boell Foundation’s partners in its ecological activities in terms of their framework conditions, policy fields and strategies, both in the South and in the transformation countries of Eastern Europe. It thus offers opportunities for reflection as well: for the Foundation itself, for its partners, and for other institutions working on international cooperation.
The study was carried out at the same time as another program organized by the Heinrich Boell Foundation, involving preparations for the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg and designed to strengthen civil-society participation in the international preparation process, as well as to provide new impulses for the continued development of the international discourse on sustainability. Examples of this include the Jo’burg Memo (www.joburgmemo.de) and the Foundation’s support for the Women’s Action Agenda for a Healthy and Peaceful Planet 2015.

Introduction
Increasing numbers of Christian theologians and ethicists are responding to the environmental challenge as the world gets hotter, stormier, unequal, crowded, more violent, and less biodiverse. In this pivotal time, what do Christian ecotheology and ethics contribute to the struggle to secure the earth community’s well-being? The multiple traditions of Christianity take competing and cooperative forms and convey an emphasis that can be either constricting or liberating. The focus here is on recent ecumenical Christian thought that emphasizes seven key themes.
Seven Key Themes
The first theme reexamines elements of scripture and tradition and refocuses Christian affirmations and ethics in ecologically-alert terms. All of the earth community is valuable to God, who continues to create, sustain, and redeem the whole. God relates directly to and cares for the well-being of otherkind, created to enjoy being in their own right and not only function as companions or helpers of humankind. Christians are recovering an earth-centered pneumatology that experiences God’s spirit immanent in creation as the power of life-giving breath

Urban Sustainability and Industrial Ecology
The emerging field of industrial ecology provides a valuable framework for understanding and transforming the relationship between cities and industrialization. Industrial ecology turns the typically antagonistic relationship of industry to nature on its head. Just as nature is fecund, optimizes its energy flows in complex networks, and recycles its own wastes, so should industrial systems mirror natural ecosystems. The industrial network of the city should produce its own energy, facilitate co-generation of energy and reuse of water within the network, and establish optimal relationships for recycling waste. By extending the metaphor of natural systems into human ones, industrial ecology provides a rationale for defining urban sustainability on a systems basis. Industrial ecology has grown rapidly over the last decade, and now provides a suite of tools for analysis and design, including design for the environment (DfE), life-cycle assessment (LCA), and materials flow analysis (MFA). The Center has conducted a series of studies, and is involved in ongoing work to use these tools to analyze the relationship of industrial and urban systems. The work strives to improve the information used in key public and private sector decision-making. Such decisions range from infrastructure build-outs and technologies for handling wastes to industrial location and job development strategies.
