E: The Environmental Magazine
Nov, 1999 by Katherine Kerlin
Business people and environmentalists are not natural allies, but they may find common ground on 135 acres of land in Petersburg, Missouri. The site, resting along the Missouri River bottom, will be converted into the nation's first physical location for The Institute of Ecolonomics. Ecolonomics, a term coined by actor and environmentalist Dennis Weaver, is the combination of ecology and economics demonstrating that sustainability and profit are not necessarily incompatible. Weaver, of Gunsmoke, McCloud and Lonesome Dove fame, is founder and president of the institute. He apprenticed for his new role by setting up ecolonomics programs at such colleges as Missouri Southern State University at Joplin and the University of Colorado at Denver. "The institute is about giving us good jobs, a strong economic base and honoring that which gives us life," says Weaver. "It's the understanding that ecology and economy are interdependent." Weaver expects the institute to create a win-win approach so that environmentalists and businesses can benefit from each other.

Social Responsibility, Ecology, and Sustainability Businesses conduct themselves in socially responsible ways when it is required of them. Below are sources that are useful for finding information about a company's practices, as well as general information on sustainability and social responsibility. To find more information on this topic, try looking up a company name or industry and the terms "social responsibility", "green marketing", "ethics", "environmental auditing", or use an "environment" term in the article indexes For more non-company specific information about social responsibility, ecology, and sustainability look at the information found at Sustainability (ICAEW) National Strategies for Sustainable Development , its Links page, or Sustainable Development Information System Yahoo! has several web pages that list various sites for business ethics and responsibility.

In slightly more than a decade, the World Wide Web has gone from the idea of an obscure English scientist to a consumer- oriented technology system with an expected one billion users by 2005. The technologies that enable this to happen are advancing rapidly, which is leading to both an unprecedented number of start-up companies and a host of innovative new alliances between companies. The growth has been so rapid and unexpected that little research and analysis has yet been done on what impact this transformation has had or will have on the ability of companies to meet the global sustainability challenge.

    http://www.ecological-engineering.com/cofs.html
    By David Del Porto
    2d revision: November 4, 1999
The basis for a workshop on Sustainable Strategies What is "sustainability"? It comes from the root word to sustain or nourish, as in sustenance. But what is to be sustained? For how long and to what end? And how can we nourish that which we wish to sustain and at what cost?
Lester Brown of the Worldwatch Institute , provided a short and succinct definition: "A sustainable society is one which satisfies it's needs without diminishing the prospects of future generations". Now that a working definition is established, the next question I am asked is: How can I begin the process of planning for a sustainable household, let alone a society?
That question has perplexed me for some time. Others are developing sets of indicators to tell if a community is sustainable and others are wrestling with the idea of measuring progress in the pursuit of a sustainable society. But, I am of the opinion that the impetus to sustain a desirable quality of life at the lowest cost of living is the underpinning of a sustainable and stable system. But there is no linguistic metasymbol to stand for or represent this new relationship.
    A new symbol is required
The new symbol or coefficient, formula or algorithm is the result of my study and was developed by me to provide such a symbol that abstracts the concept of Sustainability-that includes not only quantifiable elements, but qualitative values that are considered "externalities" that are more difficult to render-into a single statement. In this sense it is a quality or a parameter that is characteristic of Sustainability. It was first published in May of 1999.

    ABSTRACT
The purpose of this essay is to define and refine the concepts of stability and resilience and to demonstrate their value in understanding the behavior of exploited systems. Some ecological systems display several possible stable states. They may also show a hysteresis effect in which, even after a long time, the state of the system may be partly determined by its history. The concept of resilience depends upon our objectives, the types of disturbances that we anticipate, control measures that are available, and the time scale of interest. KEY WORDS: bifurcation; multiple stable states; resilience; stability.

Towards an Ecological Theory of Sustainable Knowledge Networks
by Jeff Conklin, Clarence Ellis, Lynn Offermann, Steve Poltrock, Albert Selvin, and Jonathan Grudin
    Project Summary
    Objectives and Methods
The theory will be based on empirical studies of distributed teams in the World Bank, Boeing, and Bell Atlantic. We will observe teams at work, interview team members, and analyze both their conversations and artifacts to determine the salient causal factors in the long-term sustainability of distributed collaborations. These observations are expected to yield a sort of ecological theory consisting of principles that differentiate environments that sustain teamwork from those that cripple it. Some aspects of the theory will be tested in experiments conducted either in the field or in a university laboratory.
A second objective is to capture the theory and its implications in an online "Handbook." This Handbook will serve as the research team’s collaboratory, coordinating our research processes and results. The Handbook will encourage communication among researchers in this area and provide recommendations to members of distributed teams.

The Ecology of Commerce: A Declaration of Sustainability > Customer Review #1: Nice try, but simply not enough

Dont get me wrong: I agree with the vast bulk of this book. Yet Paul Hawkens attempt at a new vision of corporate behavior and business ethics is more mirage than masterpiece. I have two main criticisms of this otherwise eloquent book. First, although Hawken bravely tries to bridge the ideological gap between his two different audiences (the rapacious businessman and economically-uninformed environmentalist), he ultimately has to pull punches on both fronts; this is okay for political compromise, but not for building vision or revealing "inherent" truthes (which seem to be the books aims). Second, and more important, the book has almost no helpful detail, either for policy or for corporate behavior. Perhaps Im really just complaining that the book is too short, but a call for Pigovian taxes and a vague yet comprehensive overhall of business philosophy does not a vision make.

    The Ecology of Commerce
    by Paul Hawken
250 pages, paperback , HarperCollins, 1994, $16.95 The Ecology of Commerce outlines the environmentally destructive aspects of many current business practices, but offers the vision of businesses adopting new practices to promote environmental restoration.
Praise for The Ecology of Commerce
"Its sheer volume of new ideas coupled with Hawken's elegant style of disclosure makes almost all business books pale beside it. The tonnage of new publications on environmental degradation and what to do about it reflects increasing concern, but rarely has that concern been so productively expressed." Michael Pellecchia, Dallas Morning News The Ecology of Commerce is nothing less than an economic and cultural masterpiece, by the poet laureate of American capitalism."George Gendron, Editor-in-Chief, Inc. "This is, in my view, the first extensive, truly ecological analysis of business; deeply disturbing and yet full of hope. Essential reading for all who care about our planet."Fritjof Capra "Environmentalists usually assume business is the enemy and vice versa. If Hawken is right, and he's got a good track record, the environmental perspective is the only way business will prosper, and business may be the only way to achieve a healthy planet. This goes beyond the revolutionary to the essential.

Many people first come to know The Future 500 through our popular Industrial Ecology conference series. The Industrial Ecology conferences are known for their unique blend of inspiration and pragmatic tools and feature speakers who are generally not yet mainstream but destined to become the thought leaders of the future. Long before they became leading names in the sustainability movement, our conferences spotlighted Jeanine Benyus, Ray Anderson, Tachi Kiuchi, and Anita Burke. Industrial Ecology attendees come from a broad mix of organizations (academic, governmental, activist, and corporate) and provide our conferences with a rich blend of approaches to business innovation. Industrial Ecology 2004 will be co-hosted by the Future 500 and the Network for Business Innovation and Sustainability (NBIS) and will be held from September 26-29, 2004 at the Westin Hotel, in Seattle, Washington. This year's conference is called "Profitable Sustainability: The Future of Business." An overview of the conference, the agenda, and registration information is available at
