I n collecting cartographic materials relating to the events of 9/11, the Library's Geography and Map Division is concentrating on documenting the role maps played in managing the recovery effort. Traditional surveying and mapping techniques as well as modern electronic and remote sensing technologies were employed to aid the rescue and recovery operations, including remote sensing and aerial imagery, digital orthophotography, cutting-edge laser (light detection and rangingLIDAR) technology with the capability of producing accurate elevation data, and thermal imagery for mapping hot spots in the rubble. T hese mapping initiatives directed at the federal, state, and municipal levelssometimes in association with the private-sectorprovided important geographic and cartographic resources to help officials evaluate damage, monitor the progress of recovery, and provide for the safe deployment of personnel.

  • Association of American Geographers
  • The Association of American Geographers (AAG) is a scientific and educational society founded in 1904. The AAG advances professional studies in geography and encourages the application of geographic research in education, government, and business. It promotes discussion among its members and with scholars in related fields, supports the publication of scholarly studies, and performs services to aid the advancement of its members and the field of geography. Its 6,500 members share interests in the theory, methods, and practice of geography, which they cultivate through the AAG's Annual Meeting, two scholarly journals (the Annals of the Association of American Geographers and The Professional Geographer), the monthly AAG Newsletter, and the activities of its nine Regional Divisions and 53 Specialty Groups. http://www.aag.org/
  • American Geographical Society
  • Established in 1851, the American Geographical Society is the oldest professional geographical organization in the United States. It is recognized world-wide as a pioneer in geographical research and education. The mission of the American Geographical Society is to link business, professional, and scholarly worlds in the creation and application of geographical knowledge and techniques to address economic, social, and environmental problems. The Society's work serves to increase geographical knowledge and the recognition of its importance in the contemporary world. Through its landmark publications, the Geographical Review and Focus magazine, and through assorted consulting and lecture services, the AGS excels in presenting clearly and concisely relevant geographical information that can be understood by the general public as well as by professional geographers. It has been noted for pioneering work in exploration and cartography; for amassing the foremost geographical research library in the Western Hemisphere; and for research, mapping, and consulting services for government and business at the highest levels.

    Introduction
    • This overview of coordinate systems for georeferencing provides a brief description of local and global systems for use in precise positioning, navigation, and geographic information systems for the location of points in space. There are many different coordinate systems, based on a variety of geodetic datums, units, projections, and reference systems in use today. As an example, this overview often uses the position of one of the thousands of geodetic control points in the United States, the star in the hand of the Goddess of Liberty atop the Capitol building in Austin, Texas. Associated Overviews
    Introduction to Geodetic Datums
    • Geodetic datums define the size and shape of the earth and the origin and orientation of the coordinate systems used to map the earth. Hundreds of different datums have been used to frame position descriptions since the first estimates of the earth's size were made by Aristotle. Datums have evolved from those describing a spherical earth to ellipsoidal models derived from years of satellite measurements. Modern geodetic datums range from flat-earth models used for plane surveying to complex models used for international applications which completely describe the size, shape, orientation, gravity field, and angular velocity of the earth. While cartography, surveying, navigation, and astronomy all make use of geodetic datums, the science of geodesy is the central discipline for the topic. Referencing geodetic coordinates to the wrong datum can result in position errors of hundreds of meters. Different nations and agencies use different datums as the basis for coordinate systems used to identify positions in geographic information systems, precise positioning systems, and navigation systems. The diversity of datums in use today and the technological advancements that have made possible global positioning measurements with sub-meter accuracies requires careful datum selection and careful conversion between coordinates in different datums.

    Chung Cheng Institute of Technology
Introduction Department of Surveying and Mapping Engineering, formally Survey College of Combined Service Force, was founded in Peking in 1903 as Surveying and Mapping School, when the Republic of China was established in 1911. It was renamed Central Surveying School, and moved to several places during the years of North Expedition, War World II and Civic War. Following the transfer of nationalist government to Taiwan in 1949, it became subordinate to Combined Service Force. The consolidation in 1969 of three military academies Army Institute of Technology, Naval Engineering College, and Survey College of Combined Service Force, led to the foundation of Chung Cheng Institute of Technology (CCIT). The Survey College was united by affiliating to Engineering School of CCIT as Department of Surveying Engineering and remained until it was re-entitled Surveying and Mapping in 1988. To cultivate the surveying and mapping officials with advanced technology. To evolve the characteristic military surveying and mapping so as to underlie the strength of national defense and to facilitate the development of national defense industry. Students are instructed amid a milieu where philosophy, military science and natural science are conjugated. It is anticipated that students be practical, innovative, and agreeable to integrating theories with their applications. This Department is affiliated to the Engineering School of CCIT. In order to meet the needs of national defense. There are three groups within this department: Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Geodesy, and Cartography. To obtain the admission, an applicant must be 22 years old or younger who has graduated from a senior high school a vocational high school and passed the entrance examination.
