New Internationalist Magazine profile of suriname statistics, economy, population, health, environment, culture, religion, language, income distribution
http://www.newint.org/issue326/profile.htm
New Internationalist August 2000 New York Times reportedly filed Suriname under ‘Africa’, while generations of geography students have assumed the country to be somewhere near Indonesia. In fact, it stands on the north-east coast of South America, one of the three non-Hispanic enclaves that make up the Guianas. South American it may be, but Suriname is also one of the most ethnically and culturally mixed countries in the world. The capital’s architecture graphically reflects this synthesis of peoples, with the imposing nineteenth-century wooden synagogue on Herenstraat rubbing shoulders with a mosque, several Hindu temples and the Roman Catholic cathedral – apparently the largest wooden structure in the Americas. Solid gabled Dutch townhouses testify to the country’s
colonial past, but the markets, restaurants and parks are a colourful mixture of African and Asian influences. While cinemas show subtitled Chinese films and Javanese gamelan musicians perform open-air concerts, the highlight of Sunday mornings is the singing competitions in the parks between trained and caged songbirds.

unless properly referenced
The proper reference is: THE FIRST INHABITANTS: HUNTERS/FISHERMEN/GATHERERS The oldest traces of human activities in the Guianas have been found in savannas, particularly in the savannas in the southern part of the country (Fig. S-1) . There is reason to believe that ca. 10,000 years ago, in a relatively dry climatic period, a more or less uninterrupted savanna belt ran from the coastal area of West Venezuela to the south of Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. It is there that we have to situate these oldest activities. The oldest traces are not found in the tropical forest. Two phases may be distinguished (Boomert, 1980): an older phase of large-game-hunters (late Pleistocene fauna such as mammoths, mastodons and megatherians) and a younger phase of early Holocene small-game-hunters. A problem in making this distinction is the lack of absolute datings in the Guianas, and the lack of remains other than stone materials. This stone material consists of tools and the waste-material from manufacturing the tools: workshops where flaked stone tools were made and, if not satisfactory, discarded. Interesting sites, but limited in information. In the Venezuelan savannas the situation is different: there we find C-14 datable charcoal and bone remains of (now extinct) large game associated with the tools. Diverging "toolkits" from different sites can be compared to those of the dated sites. The age of the tools (and activities) can subsequently be estimated according to their relationship to these well-documented sites.

Nederlands Engels History of carifesta What is carifesta carifesta is a critical tool for our integration process. It also promotes a greater awareness of the many sides, of our heritage. The regional cultural policy emphasises the role of culture within our development and places people at the centre of that development process, to foster and enhance, creativity. During the past decades, carifesta has become a mecca for artists of every art form you can think of. All of these people enjoy the very intense cultural display that goes on, during carifesta. Carifesta is the caribbean festival of arts and was origanally conceived, as a regional festival which would encompass and give credence to all the creative and artistic skills and energies of not only the member countries of caricom and the wider caribbean. But carifesta also envisaged the recognition, acceptance and participation of those of the diaspora whose contribution would most certainly enrich the quality and the significance, of such a major encounter. Indeed, past carifesta’s have provided a major forum for the entire caribbean and indeed, also to the world, to sample a potpourri of creative, culinary, visual, literary and performing and other arts, born out of the common as well as the diverse experience, of all caribbean people.

Despite the fact that all of Suriname has a tropical rainforest climate, there are several vegetation types. Going from the coast to the interior, we cross 4 zones. They are shown on the little map here, and when you click this map you'll get a more detailed one, with vegetation types, nature reserves and villages in the interior (290 kB, printable). mangrove Along the coast we have mangrove. This brackish water swamp forest may occur up to 50 km inland along the major rivers. Along the coast you may find the Four-eyed Fish * here: it has eyes with double focus lenzes so it can look above as well as under water. More inland there are Orchids * growing between the stems of tall Yautia-like Aroids, just like the Yellow Flag (Iris) would grow in reedlands in cooler regions. In some places, especially in the Eastern part of the country, there are beaches between the mangrove and the ocean. Unfortunately not very suitable for sun bathing, because, in addition to the usual mosquitoes, there are also sand fleas here, which makes it not very adviseable to go bare feet. These beaches are quite famous though for the Leatherbacks and other turtles who lay their eggs here (April - July) as well as for bird life.

Vice-Premier Geng Biao met with him while Vice-Foreign Minister Zhang Wenjin held talks with him. It was the first official contact after the establishment of diplomatic relations. On Dec. 18-20, 1984, Vice-Foreign Minister Han Xu paid a working visit to Suriname. President Misier, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Udenhout of Suriname met with Han. The Permanent Secretary of Foreign Ministry of Suriname Amman held talks twice with Han. On April 22-25, 1986, Foreign Minister Herrenberg of Suriname visited China.
