Suriname's ethnic mix is reflected in the religious allegiances of its people. The most important Christian denominations are Roman Catholic and Moravian Brethren, but many Christian groups also practice traditional African beliefs such as obeah and winti . About 80% of the East Indian population are Hindu. Although Dutch is the official language, the vernacular Sranan (also known as Surinaams), an English-based creole, is widely spoken. Hindi, Javanese, Chinese, Djuka and Saramaccan (both English-based creoles) and various Amerindian languages are also spoken. Suriname Time and Date Suriname Culture Back to Top Suriname is a culturally divided society, with contact between its ethnic groups largely limited to the economic sphere. Fine arts, such as painting and sculpture, are primarily middle-class concerns dominated by Western—primarily Dutch—cultural standards. There is one government-owned television station (with one channel), as well as a government-owned radio station and a number of small commercial radio stations. There are a few government-owned publications and two privately owned daily newspapers. Agriculture long formed the backbone of the Suriname economy, the mining of bauxite, an aluminum ore, generated the greatest amount of national income in the late 20th century.

Suriname, land of an enormous cultural diversity and one of the few spots in the world where the tropical rain forest still completely virgin. The Republic of Suriname is the second smallest country of the South American continent (63.675 sq. miles), as well as the least explored and least densely populated tropical country in the world . 420.00 inhabitants mainly consisting of Amerindians, Afro-Surinamers or Creoles, East Indians, Javanese and Chinese. 90 percent of the Surinamese population lives in the costal area. Suriname has tremendous ecotoursim potential and in fact, was one of the first countries to carry out successful rainforest tourism in the early 70's. Suriname has major ecotourism attractions, as undisturbed and uninhabited rainforst wilderness and cultural attractions which are unique and very different from the rest of South America. The country's unusual mix of African, including the Bushnegro cultures of the interior, Asian, European and native Amerindian culture elements contribute to Suriname's ecotourism potential. These attractions offer significant opportunties for Suriname to capitalize upon its competive advantage over other tropical tourism destinations.
