Sunburn relief. Relieve sunburn and wind burn Health tips
So you have overdone it in the sun, the pain is setting in and your skin is starting to feel too small for your body. We have all been there. The main problem I find is when you really are starting to suffer all the shops are closed and you cannot rush out for some aftersun or similar. Help is at hand. All you need to relieve the pain of sunburn is probably already in your cupboards. Direct action Lightly rub white vinegar on the affected area. It will ease the pain, you may have to reapply though. Yes it will not smell to wonderful but it does take away the pain. Baking Soda (Bicarbonate of soda) can soothe the sting of sunburn, windburn and other minor burns. Just saturate a washcloth in a Baking Soda solution (4 tablespoons in 1 quart of water) and apply to the affected area. Or make a Baking Soda paste with 3 parts Baking Soda and 1 part water and apply to the area. Whip an egg white and beat in a teaspoon of caster oil. Apply to the sore bits. You will find this very soothing!

But there is hope, says a University of Illinois researcher who developed a technique to peer into the skin and study how it is affected by ultraviolet radiation. The addition of antioxidants such as vitamins E or C can help prevent skin cancer and keep skin firm and young looking. "Ultraviolet radiation is known to cause several forms of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell cancer and deadly melanoma," said Kerry Hanson, a postdoctoral research scientist in the UI’s Laboratory for Fluorescence Dynamics. "But many important questions remain, such as in which layers of the skin, and in which parts of skin cells, the initial damage occurs."

UV over the United States in Aug. 2000
Since 1995, various agencies have recognized the importance of tracking and reporting UV levels to the public as a matter of safety. referring to ultraviolet radiation from the Sun, UV levels consist of three kinds: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. Of these, UV-B is the most dangerous kind to people, increasing the risk of sunburns, cancers, and cataracts. The Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) aboard the Earth Probe spacecraft, tracks ozone depletion as well as determining ultraviolet radiation penetrating the ozone layer to reach the ground. ONE YEAR OF UV UPS AND DOWNS
Annual UV levels throughout the world for August 2000 - July 2001. Things to watch for include very high levels of UV exposure during the Southern Hemisphere summer in Australia and southern Africa due to more open and cloud-free areas. Less atmosphere over the Himalayas in Asia account for high UV rates. Desert dust over the Sahara and smoke from fires in Indonesia and Mexico absorb UV radiation, meaning lower UV rates in those areas.

General Welcome/Mission Health Centers Services Departments ... Links/Resources The sun is a mixed blessing. In small doses it helps you use the vitamin D consumed through your diet, offers psychological benefits, and may help acne and other skin problems. Unfortunately, it can also cause skin to:
  • wrinkle prematurely age burn and blister turn rough and leathery become cancerous
You are at greater risk for sunburn and skin cancer if you:
  • spend much time or work outdoors have light or fair skin have light-colored eyes burn or freckle easily have a personal or family history of skin cancer
Causes of Sunburn Ultraviolet light is the culprit in sunburn. It is invisible and cannot be felt, yet seventy or eighty percent penetrates water and clouds, and can be reflected off water, sand and snow. As the atmosphere thins at high altitudes, more rays filter through. For these reasons hikers, skiers, swimmers, and beach-goers need to protect themselves from overexposure to sun, and especially from the rays of ultraviolet light. Certain substances can make the skin more susceptible to burning: drugs, such as certain antibiotics and birth control pills, or antibacterial agents in medicated soaps and creams. In addition, many drugs and chemicals are sun-sensitive and may cause allergic-type rash on parts of the body exposed to the sun.

Sunburn
VOL 115 / NO 5 / MAY 2004 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE Download this Patient Note in PDF format You've stayed at the beach longer than you'd planned, and now your skin is red and painful. Sunburn damages your skin and can increase your risk of skin cancer. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to lessen the pain and to prevent it from happening again. Why does my skin burn rather than tan?
The skin contains melanin, a pigment that protects the skin and gives it a brownish cast after it is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun. Sunburn occurs when the amount of exposure to UV light exceeds the ability of melanin to protect the skin. People with light skin burn sooner than people with darker skin. You can burn even in the shade. What are the risks of sunburn?
In the short term, a severe sunburn can cause swelling, blisters, and fever. Long-term effects may include early skin wrinkling and skin cancer. One type of skin cancer, melanoma, is particularly deadly. How can I prevent sunburn?
Stay out of the sun between 10 AM and 2 PM , when UV light from the sun is at its most intense and is most damaging. Avoid tanning booths. If you must be in the sun, smooth on a generous amount of sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) higher than 30. People with fair skin should use a sunscreen with an SPF of 45 or higher. Sunscreens should be applied 30 to 60 minutes before sun exposure.

Mix together 2 tbsp each of marshmallow and comfrey root. Set over low heat in a saucepan with 1 cup olive oil and 1 cup wine for 30 minutes. Cool and strain. Marshmallow and comfrey are reputed to have excellent skin healing properties. Raw Aloe Vera
Break off a leaf of the plant and squeeze juice from the inside of the leaf onto the burn area. It will be thick and jelly-like, and it smells bad, but aloe vera provides a great healing aid to the skin. Tea Bags
Tannic acid can help draw the heat from a burn. Drop 2-3 tea bags in a bath - put under the spout while the water is running to get the most out of the tea bags. Add a decoction of comfrey root for more pain relief. Another method is to make a decoction using 3-4 tea bags (see How to make and use herb preparations ), 2 cups of fresh mint leaves and 4 cups water. Strain liquid into a jar and allow to cool. To use, dab the mixture on sunburned skin with a cotton ball or washcloth.

Altitude Increases Sunburn Risk SCHAUMBURG, IL (January 13, 1999) Skiers, hikers and others enjoying outdoor activities in the mountains have long believed that the amount of time it took them to develop sunburn was shorter than when they were at lower levels. New research confirms that the higher the altitude, the quicker a person will develop sunburn. In fact, the risk gets greater faster with increasing altitude than initially suggested. A researcher from the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Dermatology at the New York University School of Medicine used a hand-held meter (National Biological Corporation Model 500-C) to measure UV light energy in three locations: Vail, Colorado; Orlando, Florida; and New York, New York. The readings were taken at solar noon in direct sunlight on cloudless days. "We found that the direct UV-B levels at 8,500 feet in Vail, Colorado, were approximately 60 percent higher than at sea level in New York," said Darrell S. Rigel, MD, the lead author of the study. "In addition, the direct UV-B levels in Vail were the same as those in Orlando, a site nearly 775 miles closer to the equator." The intensity of the UV-B exposure suggests that a person having an average complexion, with unprotected skin, would burn after only six minutes of sun exposure on a clear day at noon in Vail at 11,000 feet above sea level. The same person would develop sunburn after 25 minutes of noontime exposure in New York or 14 minutes of unprotected noontime exposure in Orlando.

Is skin damage from the sun worth worrying about? How can I prevent my toddler from getting a sunburn? What's the best way to treat my daughter's sunburn?
For starters, make sure your child drinks plenty of fluids; she's probably dehydrated from being out in the sun. To soothe the sunburned area, soak a cloth diaper or clean washcloth in cool water, wring it out, and gently place it on the sunburned area for 10 to 15 minutes a few times a day (just make sure your child doesn't get chilled). Or let her soak in a cool bath. (Adding baking soda or Aveeno, an oatmeal-based bath treatment, to the water can make it more soothing.) Giving her children's acetaminophen (Tylenol) or children's ibuprofen (Advil) can also ease the pain. (Stay away from aspirin, as it can put your child at risk for Reye's Syndrome Do I need to call the pediatrician about a sunburn?
