See also sunburn first aid Common Causes Return to top Sunburn results when the amount of exposure to the sun or other ultraviolet light source exceeds the ability of the body's protective pigment, melanin , to protect the skin. Sunburn in a very light-skinned person may occur in less than 15 minutes of midday sun exposure, while a dark-skinned person may tolerate the same exposure for hours. It is now recognized that sunburn and sun exposure should not be taken as something insignificant. Deaths have resulted from acute sun exposure and significant temporary disability is experienced by millions of sunburned people each year.

Sunburns Sunlight-induced skin aging and the incidence of skin cancers are increasing in many areas of the world. Because of the tilt of the earth in relation to the sun, tropical areas receive stronger solar radiation year-round, than other areas in the world. In nontropical areas, solar radiation is stronger in summer than in winter because the earth's tilt puts that part of the world closer to the sun in summer. Solar radiation includes, of course, visible light. Solar radiation also contains other wavelengths that are invisible to the human eye , such as ultraviolet (UV) light. UV radiation at high doses increases the risk of basal cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma . Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet A (UVA) or ultraviolet B (UVB) increases photoaging. UVA is radiation in the 320-400 nanommeter range and UVB radiation is in the 290-320 nanometer range . UVB is responsible for most of the redness ( erythema ) and tanning associated with sun exposure.

http://www.coolnurse.com/sunburn.htm
Too Much Sun Symptoms of sunburn usually appear within a few hours after exposure, and up until 24 hours after exposure and peak within 2 to 3 days. Most sunburns are first-degree burns that cause the skin to become red, warm and tender to the touch. Second-degree burns are a more serious burn and can cause severe swelling, reddening, pain and blisters. Blisters are a sign that the burn has gone deeper than just the surface layer of the skin and has caused damage and the release of fluids from the cells in the lower layers of the skin. This results in bad blisters and breaks in the skin where bacteria and other organisms can enter. This is not a good situation and a person with a burn this badly should get some medical attention. See our Tanning page for the dangers of too much sun.

Sunburn Cheilitis, actinic Sunburn Definition Return to top Sunburn is from over-exposure to the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. While the symptoms are usually temporary (such as red skin that is painful to the touch), the skin damage is often permanent and can have serious long-term health effects, including skin cancer. Considerations Return to top Keep in mind:
  • There is no such thing as a "healthy tan". Unprotected sun exposure causes premature aging of the skin. Sun exposure can cause first and second degree burns Skin cancer usually appears in adulthood, but is caused by sun exposure and sunburns that began as early as childhood. You can help prevent skin cancer by protecting your skin and your children's skin from the harmful rays of the sun.
Factors that make sunburn more likely:
  • Infants and children are especially sensitive to the burning effects of the sun.
