IT IS DIFFICULT to appreciate and understand Sufism fully without an informed exposure to the expressive cultural forms that help define and enhance it. It is this dimension of Islamic mysticism that transports the seeker on the path of spiritual attainment into higher states of consciousness that promise spiritual intoxication ( wajd ) and a unique and intimate union, even annihilation ( fanâ' ), in the supreme being. This emotional expression of faith is intensified and externalized in elaborate forms of meditation and esoteric techniques that are part of ritual ceremonies. Through ritual, many Sufi orders and Sufi-related sects throughout the world of Islam have been able to articulate doctrines and beliefs through artistic traditions such as sung poetry, instrumental music and dance-like movements ( samâ ' or spiritual concerts) and have utilized meditation patterns that combine corporeal techniques and controlled breathing ( dhikr ; Turkish

Islamic Dancing (Continued)
C. Religious Dancing of the Sufi Muslims
Sufis were Muslims who tried to connect with God through experiences such as dance, music, prayer, poetry, meditation, fasting, and some even through pain of self-flagellation (beating oneself) . Their founder was Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, a poet and mystic who lived from 1207 - 1273. Sufis brought Islam to the common person in many of the areas that had been conquered or whose rulers had been converted. It was especially popular with both literate and illiterate people in Turkey, Persia, India, and North Africa. Sufis preached that there could be a personal and direct relationship with God, not just through studying of written works and through scholarship. One form of Sufi dance ritual was popular in Turkey. The dancers were later called "Whirling Dervishes" and their ritual is called Sema. The Sema Ceremony is whirling in a religious "trance". It is explained and photographed at: " Sema A Spiritual Journey ". The Sema ceremony (whirling ceremony) is also described and illustrated. This type of "religious dancing" is not common outside of Turkey and the Sufi sects. Today it has become more commercialized and is presented before audiences, but its original purpose was to bring the dancer in closer contact with God, like a type of meditation, a religious experience.

Early Sufi Women A bilingual critical edition of as-Sulami's Dhikr an-Niswa al-Muta 'abbitdat as-Sufiyyat Translated and annotated Rkia Elaroui Cornell, Duke University Fons Vitae 270pp, paper, 1-887752-06-4, $24.95 Early Sufi Women is the earliest known work in Islam devoted entirely to women's spirituality. Written by the Persian Sufi Abü 'Abd ar-Rahman as-Sulami (d. 1021), this long-lost work provides portraits of eighty Sufi women who lived in the central Islamic lands between the eighth and eleventh centuries C. E. As spiritual masters and exemplars of Islamic piety, they served as respected teachers and guides in the same way as did Muslim men, often surpassing men in their understanding of Sufi doctrine, the Qur'an, and Islamic spirituality. Whether they were scholars, poets, founders of Sufi schools, or individual mystics and ascetics, they embodied a wisdom that could not be hidden. This important addition to the growing body of literature examining the historical presence of women in Islam is the first translation into English of a rare study of eighty-two Sufi women by the tenth-century Iranian scholar as-Sulami . The author was known primarily for his studies on Sufi chivalry and the malamitiyya (the Sufi order following "the way of blame," of which his father was a member), as well as a biographical compendium of the lives of one hundred Sufi men. Originally believed to be an appendix to that work, these brief life-stories of Sufi women are now thought to form an independent work, one which scholars long feared lostwith only references in other sourcesuntil a manuscript was found in a university library in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1991. An Arabic edition was published in 1993. This edition contains the original Arabic as well as Rkia Elaroui Cornell's translation, along with her extensive footnotes and introduction, which put the work into the context of as-Sulami's life and times and Sufism in general. Cornell has included as an appendix her translation of a similar study of Sufi women, written some two hundred years later by

Sufism - The Way of The Heart S ufism is known as the Way of the Heart, the Way of the Pure, the Mystical Path of Islam. By whatever name it is called, it is the path which takes the seeker to the Divine Presence. In essence Sufism is a means and a way by which the seeker will move from the gravity of his or her lower self, to ascend, with the assistance of a mystical guide, and through the methods and practices defined by the Way he or she has chosen, to the state wherein the Vision of God is presented to her or him. The ways to God are as numerous as the breaths of mankind. Each individual person has his or her own, personal and private way to the Divine Presence. The Mystical Path to the Divine Presence Among human beings, there must always exist those, whom through Divine Grace, have received their Trusts from God in this worldly life. They move about in the world as if they were part of it, yet inside, their hearts and souls are in the Divine Presence. If they ask of God, their request is accepted, and if they look at mankind, it is always with the eye of mercy to those less fortunate than themselves. They are known as the Friends of God, called Awliya in Sufism. It is Sufism which is related to them and they are product of Sufism.

Sufi Wisdom: Bribery
Joe Katzman (Part of our weekly Sufi Wisdom series T.L. James is moving, so I'm taking this on again for the next few weeks.) This week's tale comes from Idries Shah's book, A Perfumed Scorpion: A Way to the Way . The book has many fine stories like this, and takes the time to set them in context too. "Mulla Nasruddin is about to engage in litigation. He says to his lawyer: 'If I sent the judge 100 gold pieces, what effect would that have on the ruling of my case?' The lawyer is horrified. 'You do that,' he says, 'and he'll find against you for sure - you might even be arrested for attempted bribery!' - 'Are you sure?' 'Quite sure, I know that judge!' The case was heard, and the Mulla won. 'Well,' said the lawyer, 'you did get justice after all, you can't deny that... 'Mind you, said Nasruddin, 'the gold pieces also helped...' 'You mean you actually sent the judge money ?' howled the lawyer. 'Oh yes,' said Mulla Nasruddin - 'but of course, I sent the gold in the other man's name!"
