Gurdjieff and Sufi Paths
Those who try hiking both these paths will find that they do, indeed, criss-cross here and there, run along a few ridges together, and part in other places. These paths can lead to a real destination, unlike most of the trails that meander about the trackless wastes that we call our lives. By their very nature, the Gurdjieff Work and Sufism are related. This site will explore the particulars of this relationship and the many synergies that exist between these two great teaching systems.

Sufi Love by Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh All human beings during their lives tend to experience love and friendship. Human love can be classified into three basic categories according to its intensity, quality and limitations. The first form of love is the friendship that is based on social conventions where two people behave in accordance with the following principle: "I for myself, you for yourself; we love each other, and we have no expectations of each other." This form of love is that of ordinary people, whose love relationships tend to be of this nature.
One Who Knows One's Self Knows One's Lord by Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh There is a Prophetic Tradition, in which the Prophet says, "One who knows one's self knows one's Lord." Various interpretations of this tradition are possible, depending on whether we interpret 'Lord' to mean the one who commands, or God.
Traveling and Social Conduct on the Path by Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh In Persian, the term sayr wa suluk (traveling and social conduct on the Path) -which is another term for Sufism- is composed of two words where each word can be explained separately in the following manner.

SOUTH ASIAN HISTORY Pages from the history of the Indian sub-continent: Islamic Religion and Culture, Sufism Sufi Currents and Civilization in the Islamic Courts No serious examination of the civilizations that flourished in the courts of the Islamic rulers is possible without an understanding of Sufi currents that played a vital - even decisive role in shaping the cultural output of the great Islamic empires. As any student of world history may note, civilization typically comes to a grinding halt wherever the writ of a revealed religion runs supreme. For any civilization to blossom, there has to be a certain intellectual and cultural space that is relatively free from dogma and hidebound traditions. In the earliest examples of the Islamic courts, particularly during the reign of the Abbasids in Baghdad, there was an informal separation of church and state and Arab civilization was able to make important gains , drawing inputs from a variety of eclectic sources - both indigenous and external (such as Indian and Mediterranean). But once the paramountcy of the Quran and the Shariat laws began to be more strictly enforced - the Islamic courts needed some alternate current to prevent the newly established Islamic societies from slipping into the dark ages as had occurred in the Christian kingdoms of early medieval Europe. Sufism thus emerged as a protestant and liberalizing current, that eventually became the primary vehicle for intellectual advance and the dissemination of culture in societies governed by Islamic sovereigns.

38. Rumi Poetry
A small site, including some poems by the sufi master and a brief biography.

Rumi Poem 1 Poem 3 Poem 2 Poem 4 ... More Rumi Information Rumi's Life Jelaluddin Rumi was born in the region today known as Afghanistan in 1207. His family fled the Mogul invasion to Konya, Turkey where he spent most of his life. Rumi following in his fathers ancestoral line became a scholar until his meeting with the wandering dervish, Shams of Tabriz. Of this meeting Rumi said, "What I had thought of before as God, I met today in a person." After Shams, Rumi's other strong influences were Saladin Zarkub, the goldsmith, and later his scribe, Husam. His poetry filled with a longing to be with the Friend, Him, or You. Are these mysterious pronouns the names of God, Shams, or who? This is for you, the reader to ponder. Rumi founded the Mevlevi Order of dervishes, better known as the Whirling Dervishes of Sufism. Through a turning movement, body posturing, mental focus, and sound, the dervish achieves ecstasy through union with God. Once a secret society, today the Mevlevi tour the world allowing audiences to witness the ceremony of their sacred dances and music. It is also interesting to note that similar to other major religions, Islam frowns upon dancing and using words such as "gamble," "drunk," and "wine" which you find throughout Rumi's and other great Islamic and Sufi poets writings. Obviously they mean "drunk" on God's grace, but that's not to say they wouldn't be outcast by religious fundamentalists today.

'Baye Fall'
Cheikh Ibrahima Fall
Cheikh Ibra Fall was born in 1856. He played a vital role in the foundation of the Mouride Community. It shaped the movement as it is known and lived today. He has shown the disciples the submission and appropriate behaviour to observe towards to Ahmadu Bamba, visionary founder and prophet of the Mouride Brotherhood in Touba.
Baye Fall
Irreproachable workers, Baye Fall is the hard-core of the Mouride Brotherhood, ready for the demanding tasks of service to their community and it is certain that their work gives to the Brotherhood a strong sense of unity and unites Baye Fall in a powerful feeling of collective obligation. The fruits of this work constitute the source of income for the community.
