    A Nation Divided
By Paul Salopek Photographs by Randy Olson
An oil pipeline fuels the unforgiving heart of a seemingly endless war. It may also be a means to peace.
Get a taste of what awaits you in print from this compelling excerpt.
The oldest civil war in the world is being fought, on one side, by men who wander like demented hospital orderlies across the primordial wastes of Africa. I follow them one hot morning as they flee a government ambush in the oil fields of southern Sudan. One of their comrades has just been shot dead, his body abandoned on a parched savanna that hides nearly 20 billion dollars' worth of low-sulfur crude. We retreat for hours under a scalding sun, crossing in the process a vast, cauterized plain of cracked mud. I pause a moment to watch them: an ant-like column of rebels dressed in bizarre homemade uniforms of green cotton smocks and white plastic slippers, limping into the heat waves of distance. Five casualties bounce in stretchers. They suffer their bullet wounds in silence. A boy marching in front balances a car battery on his head. He is the radio operator's assistant. Every few hundred yards he puts the battery down and empties blood out of a shoe.
"You cannot reclaim what is lost," the sweating rebel commander says, squatting in the shade of an acacia, "so you just keep fighting for what little you have left."

    Environment
Sudan is mainly composed of extensive plains or ironstone soils in the South, clay in the central regions and sand in the North and West. There are few mountainous areas of which the principal ones are the Imatong in the South, Jebel Marra in the West, and the Red Sea Hilis'lin the East. The major vegetation zones in Sudan are desert, semi-desert, woodland savanna :the on clay and woodland savanna on sand, woodland derived recently from the rainforest, the flood region and montane vegetation. The arid and semi-arid areas constitute more than 60% of the area of the country. The desert covers about 700,000 square kilometres, or more than one quarter of the country. The total area of the semi-desert vegetation covers about 478,000 square kilometres. The total area of low rainfall savanna on clay covers about 122,000 square kilometres. The wide variety of vegetation types in Sudan is reflected in its fauna. Out of the 13 mammalian orders in Africa, 12 can be found in Sudan. 1,931 species of birds were recorded in Sudan. Equally diversified is the fish fauna, the most significant of which are that of the Nile. The Nile is geologically old and has a distinctive "Nilotic" fauna, which includes relatively few species (24 families and 106 species). Similarly, the insect fauna of Sudan is very diversified; it is estimated that there are at least 100 species of insect pests in Sudan.

    Nile River Geography
Nile Proper . This mighty river flows northward through Sudan and Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea. Map Credit
To the south, tropical lakes of Central Africa feed the Nile river. Emanating from Lake Victoria (3720 feet), the Nile flows through Lake Albert (2030 feet) of western Uganda, and northward through southern Sudan as the Mountain Nile to Lake No. Here several smaller tributaries join the river forming the White Nile which flows quietly through the grassy plains of central Sudan to Khartoum.
The Blue Nile drains the high mountains (13,000+ feet) of Ethiopia, with the help of the Atbara River, which flows into the Nile approximately 150 miles north of Khartoum. These two rivers carry rocky debris that eventually forms the fine stone dust known to comprise the black mud of the Nile.
Below (north of) Khartoum the Upper Nile Aswan (also Assuan ), forms the natural southern boundary of Egypt.
Throughout its length, rocky walls, sometimes 600 to 800 feet tall, flank either side of the valley containing the Nile. This valley never exceeds five to nine miles in width throughout the Sudan but broadens past Aswan reaching widths of up to thirty-three miles. Near Gebel Silsileh, about thirty miles north of Aswan, the Sudanese sandstone gives way to limestone. The limestone forms cliffs along the Lower Nile for nearly 475 miles to the Delta
The cliffs reach high, table-like plateaus that are surrounded by sand from the nearby deserts. The Libyan Desert, the northeastern part of the Sahara, borders the Nile to the west. To the east, the limestone plateau skirts the Arabian Desert which parallels high mountains further east. Primarily granite and gneiss, these mountains border the Red Sea and rise to heights of 6000 feet or more.
