JEWISH ROOTS IN SUDAN
By: William Levi Ochan Ajjugo
When most people think of Judaism in black Africa, they think of the so-called Falashas, Bet Israel, Ethiopian Jews who have kept the essentials of biblical Judaism despite being isolated geographically from other Jews for thousands of years. The Falashas are in fact the tip of the iceberg. Judaism came to Africa long before Islam or even Christianity, itself an early arrival. Hebrews have been in Africa hundreds of years before the exodus from Egypt. So influential was ancient Judaism in northern and eastern Africa that anthropologists have devised a test to tell whether a given tribe or people has Hebraic roots: It does so if males are circumcised at age of 1 or earlier. I am from South Sudan, the largely Christian, African portion of the Sudan, which has long been dominated by Arab Muslims to the north, in Khartoum. I am from a tribe called the Madi, and while we did not retain Judaism as thoroughly as did the Falashas in neighboring Ethiopia, I am amazed as I look back at how many of our customs seem to have come from the Hebrew Scriptures. Among Christians and non- Christians like, one G-d was worshipped. As in the Book of Leviticus, blood sacrifices were offered or sins. The worst sins required the sacrifice of a sheep, the ones below these a boat, and the "least" sins a chicken. A hereditary group of elders or priests decided which to sacrifice, and presided over these and other ceremonies.

From the Sudan to Iowa and Back to the Sudan
By Zubeda Musa
The Sudan is one of the African countries; and it’s divided into two parts, the northern and southern part. The capital of Sudan is Khartoum. Juba is the city where I’m from. It’s beautiful and warm. Juba is well- known worldwide for the wild animals, game parks, tall buildings and historical adventures. Many tourists from America and Europe come to visit Juba during summer in their countries. In the Sudan, we have different tribes and languages, The national language in Sudan is Arabic, but not everybody speaks it. It depends on which part of the country you’re coming from. Arabic is spoken in cities, but some people in rural areas don’t speak Arabic. They could speak one of many different languages. Different people have their own culture, even in this one country. There are some people who follow their traditional culture and dress according to their culture and have their traditional outfits which they wear during cultural weddings. My culture dresses differently than many others, but it depends how you were brought up. I’m from a tribe called Nuba in the Sudan, and most of us are Muslims so we dress according to the Muslim religion. Young people dress in modern outfits, but you find them dressing traditionally during traditional marriages, cultural celebrations, and for funerals. Most people in the Sudan live as a nuclear family. One significant difference about my family is that we live as an extended family according to the customs of the Nuba tribe This tribe was named after the Nuba mountain, and we speak the Nubian language. In addition to this tribe, there are many others, such as the Madi, the Kakwa, and the Nuer.

Nuer-speakers are very excited about having the Bible in their language. The Moru Bible is currently being produced and we hope to receive it during 2000 – this is a significant step in reaching the Moru people in their own language. Translation work continues on the Dinka Padang and Shilluk Bibles. Work on the Lutho New Testament is also on schedule. There are plans to print the Gospel of Luke in Lutho.

April 2002 The takeover of the National Islamic Front government in 1989, and its drive to Islamize a country that is only partly Moslem, has not only led to massive killing, starvation displacement , and pauperization of the Dinka and Nuba populations in southern Sudan. There also has been a systematic drive to eliminate their religions, languages, legal systems, and customs. I believe we need to broaden our theoretical framework beyond the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide to include the concept of what I describe as "cultural genocide." The original draft of the Convention contained a more inclusive definition of genocide: "the destruction of the specific character of the persecuted `group’ by forced transfer of children, forced exile

ENVIRONMENT-SUDAN: Yes to Development, No to a new Dam, Nubians Say
By Nhial Bol KHARTOUM, Jan 8 (IPS) Members of the Nubian Alliance, which groups the Wadi Halfa, Dongola and Marowe communities in Sudan's Northern State, are threatening mass suicide to protest the taking of their land for the proposed Kajbar Dam. ''We are preparing to commit suicide if our land is taken from us,'' said Suad Ibrahim Ahmed, the leader of the Alliance which was formed to campaign against the building of the dam. ''Allowing our land to be taken means the extinction of our distinct language and culture forever. Our intention is that we must die before our culture and our language,'' she says. ''Where can we go if our area is taken?'' Ahmed, who is a respected woman leader within the communities fighting against the dam project, told IPS that the people are not opposed to development which protects their culture. ''We told the government that we want development. We say 'yes to development, but no to the dam'. Any development that displaces us, destroys our language and our culture is rejected, and we prefer to live without development if that is the case,'' she says.

from the Washington Post The Dinka of the Southern Sudan A Cross Cultural Study by Christine Preston (Nagle College, Blacktown) Traditional lifestyle
Traditionally cattle herders living on the vast savanna of the southern Sudan in Africa, the Dinka were split into twenty or more tribal groups which were further divided into sub-tribes, each occupying a tract of land large enough to provide adequate water and pasture for their herds. Still today, the Dinka lifestyle centres on their cattle: the people's roles within the groups, their belief systems and the rituals they practice, all reflect this. Cattle give milk (butter and ghee), urine is used in washing, to dye hair and in tanning hides. Dung fuels fires from which ash is used to keep the cattle clean and free from blood-sucking ticks, to decorate the Dinka themselves (body art), and as a paste to clean teeth. While cattle are not killed for meat, if one dies or is sacrificed, the meat is eaten and the hide cured. Skins are used for mats and drum skins, and belts, ropes and halters are also made from it. Horns and bones are used for a range of practical and aesthetic items. During the wet season, the Dinka live in homesteads consisting of small groups of grassroofed, mud-walled houses set among scattered palms and thorn bushes. During the dry season, everyone except the aged, the ill and nursing mothers take the herds to the camps by the river. They don't return to the homesteads until the rains come. The rains make the riverside camps uninhabitable, turning the grasslands into swamps. Their homeland is very important to the Dinka: their whole existence focuses on their rivers and pasture, in the spirits they believe inhabit the grassland, and in their cattle.

In Sudan, Peace Deal Can't End Cultural Conflict saturday April 10 - 04 19 : 30 GMT Pacific news service
KHARTOUM, Sudan Warring parties in oil-rich Sudan long branded a supporter of terror by the United States and even a temporary home base for Osama bin Laden may soon stop fighting. Tempted by promises of development assistance and investment, they're trying to finalize a deal in wavering peace talks in neighboring Kenya. But a short drive from the banks of the Nile to the dusty edge of Khartoum reveals little peace left in a country where Africa meets the Arab world and Christianity confronts Islam.
