Free admission Th e interim display on understanding Ancient Egyptian Culture will remain while new permanent galleries about social and religious practices in Ancient Egypt are being prepared to open in 2005. The interim display includes some of the artefacts and themes which will feature in the new galleries, spanning a period from 2500BC to the 7 th century AD.
The gallery examines our diverse sources for understanding the ancient Egyptian world and places these sources in context. There are four main themes:
Hieroglyphs and the written record

Developing the collection

Illuminating the collection

Living in ancient Egypt
This last section includes artefacts demonstrating the Egyptians' attitude to their landscape and to their gods, and some domestic material such as furniture and jewellery which provides what little evidence we have for the ancient Egyptian's experience of life. The display as a whole forms the orientation galley to introduce the Roxie Walker Galleries of Egyptian Funerary Archaeology. The display also features several popular star pieces that were previously on display in the recently remodelled Central Saloon of the Egyptian Sculpture Gallery, including the famous

Since ancient times new crops, irrigation methods and settlement patterns have been introduced. The way in which Egyptian culture conceptualised their landscape and its animals shows us their view of the world, even though landscape is not a major theme in Egyptian art. The Nile, which was known simply as `the river', dominated the Egyptian's world-view, and it was uniquely important as a source of food, water, and transport. The river landscape was like western pastoral world, a place of recreation and lovemaking as well as an economic resource, and river plants decorate many artefacts. It was also a potentially dangerous place, and river animals such as crocodiles and hippopotami were greatly feared.

    Sudan: Today's Ignored Holocaust
    by Rachel Alexander
    June 4, 2002
The war going on in the Sudan between fundamentalist Muslims and the Christian south is one of the worst holocausts of this century, but for some reason, it's relegated to the back pages of the newspapers.
The Khartoum regime receives its financing from the powerful government-owned Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company, which has international partners in Russia, China, and a Canadian oil company, Talisman. The government has made profits of $300 million from Talisman alone, and collects about $1 million a day from all of them. This money is then used to buy Western, Russian, and Chinese planes to bomb the south. 90 percent of Christians in the south have been displaced, mainly to make way for oil exploration. Khartoum also receives money from allies such as Libya. Journalists like Dan Rather have bought into reports that slavery is not really taking place, and instead of visiting Sudan to verify the accuracy of the reports, have dismissed the work of human rights groups such as Solidarity International and the American Anti-Slavery Group, groups that are trying to stop the slavery. John Eibner, an official with Christian Solidarity International, has reportedly freed about 60,000 slaves, mostly by buying them. In all, it is estimated that between 100,000 and 200,000 people from the south have been enslaved by the north and sold into slavery in other nearby countries.

Sufism casts a spell of moderation
over Sudan Followers of this Samaniya sufi sect, or tariqa, spend all afternoon of their only
day off work worshipping God through the zikr, or practice of remembrance.
The sheikh guides devotees through the various
    chants and movements.
    Even young children can
join in (women participate in a separate area)
Extended family networks are the main source of personal security and social strength. Tradition has it that no family in Sudan is without at least one sufi. The sufi commitment to service helps keep families intact. Here a family gathers for dinner around a common plate.
"If there is a family in Sudan that does not have at least one Sufi member, it is not Sudanese.”
This is the view of Dr. Hasan Al Fatih Qaribullah, a leading sheikh of the Sammaniya tariqa, or Sufi movement, in Khartoum. It is a view commonly held by Sudanese. Sufism in Sudan is not a public issue or part of a national debate. Yet it is an enormously important force that has shaped, and continues to shape, the society as a whole.

S udan O nline L ist V ersion O ne Sudan Online List is a collection of sites related to Sudan on the Internet. It was compiled using different Internet research tools. Sudan Online List does not claim to be a comprehensive list about Sudan on the Internet. As the Internet is changing rapidly many sites and documents are to be searched and included. Compiling list of this kind requires a lot of time and effort. Searching Sudan by using the Internet search engines could be misleading and time consuming as they may point to any document that contain the name SUDAN . You have to wade through hundreds of insignificant doucments and sites to find the subject of your interest. I spent a lot of time looking up sites to find out they are sites for a software named Soudan, homepages for some guys from Turkey with the last name Sudan, gifs for family's vacation in the red sea.. etc.!! I tried , in this list, to regroup sites or documents of relatively similar nature under certain categories defined by topic. By this I hope surfing the Internet for Sudan-related sites would be a lot easier and cost you less time online Sudan Online List is a list under construction. It would be updated and maintained regulary. As many other sites are yet to be added, the current enteries will be modified to further improve seaching.

    Flag of Sudan Background:
Problems began for the new republic almost immediately, in the shape of conflict between north and south. Carefully isolated from one another under British rule, the vast cultural differences between these two regions now escalated rapidly, and civil war was imminent.
A military coup, led by General Ibrahim Abboud, overthrew the government in 1958. Parliament was dismissed and martial law was declared, with Abboud as self-proclaimed Prime Minister.
Another coup in 1969, led this time by Colonel Jafaar Mohammed al-Nimeiry, set up government under a revolutionary council. Nimeiry became the Sudan's first elected President in 1972, and signed the Addis Ababa agreement, in an attempt to end strife between north and south. Uneasy peace was maintained for almost a decade and in 1983, Nimeiry was re-elected for a third term of office. His policies for economic recovery were ineffective, however, and unrest grew once more, resulting in Nimeiry's deposition in a bloodless coup in April 1985. A year of military rule followed, before the rise of a new Mahdi. This was Sadiq al-Mahdi, the great-grandson of Mohammed Ahmad, but, despite many lofty promises of democracy, the new government proved weak and al-Mahdi was deposed in 1989.

Music Drama Visual arts ... Sudan archaeology society Sudan Archaeology society Sudan – a big country, an even bigger history The home of the earliest kingdoms and civilisations south of the Sahara, the rich archaeological heritage of Sudan and Nubia still remains little known. In a vast country, archaeological work is still thinly spread and under-resourced. Archaeologists are only at the very beginning of the study of the first great kingdom of Sudan at Kerma (c.2500-1500 BCE), the Kushite/Meroitic Empire (c.800 BCE-350 CE), the prosperous medieval Nubian kingdoms and the great Sultanates of Funj Sennar and Darfur of the post-medieval period. Unfortunately very little archaeological work has ever been carried out in southern Sudan so, as yet, we know very little of its early past. When was the Sudan Archaeology Society created? Sudan Archaeology Society (SAS) was formed in Khartoum in 1989 by Patrick Early (former Director of the British Council), Dr. Muawia Shaddad, Zuhair Saeed and a small group of interested people. Why was the Sudan Archaeology Society created?
