http://www.ignca.nic.in/nl002101.htm
ARTICLE Newsletter List of Newsletter Sudan's Culture Ministry Signs MoU with IGNCA THE Government of Sudan and Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts have signed a MOU for greater cultural cooperation and exchange. The MOU was signed on July 11 in the presence of the Sudanese Minister for Culture and Tourism Mr. Siddig Mugtaba, who was on a state visit to India (see interview). The MOU was initialed by Prof N.R. Shetty, Member Secretary IGNCA and Mr. Mekki Sinada, Advisor to the Sudanese Minister for Tourism and Culture. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Mugtaba said "culture is the torch that shows the path for the future generations." Describing the signing of MOU as a historic moment he said unlike the moments that pass and fade away from the memory, this moment in history is anchored, in the MOU. The MOU was not part of the minister's pre-arranged itinerary. It was a fall-out of the minister's visit to IGNCA. Seeing the potential of IGNCA for cultural cooperation and its technological strengths, the minister sought greater cooperation between IGNCA and the cultural institutions in Sudan. According to the agreement, the two sides will pursue joint activities in the areas of culture and academics. They will organize conferences and other academic conventions, undertake joint research and projects in mutually agreed areas, identify specific areas of research conducive to the award of Ph.D. and other awards, exchange resources such as research materials, publications and other relevant information, identify for possible exchange of primary and secondary source material, copies of manuscripts, microfilms/fisches, slides or rare material on art and culture available in public and private institutions including libraries, museums etc and exchange appropriate Information Technology for cultural digitization and software building.

Sudan: Customs
The Sudan is Africa in microcosm: a large country with geographic, extremes ranging from sandy desert to tropical forest. It is culturally a loose association of almost 600 tribes who have Arabic as their common language. The French, the English, and the Italians have all had colonies in the Sudan. The cuisine is a melding of the many varied backgrounds of the peoples who have influenced its history. The ritual of hospitality is as important in the Sudan as it is in other Arab and African countries. And while there is a measure of similarity in all the Arab and African countries, each has its unique characteristics. For example, no other country prepares coffee as the Sudanese do, and if this country acquired culinary fame, it is for its Jebena Sudanese. The Sudanese fry their coffee beans in a special pot over charcoal and then grind it with cloves and certain spices. They steep it in hot water and serve it lovingly in tiny coffee cups after straining it through a special tresh grass sieve. In Sudan, if you are an important guest, a sheep will be slaughtered in your honor. Many dishes will then be prepared, each more delicious than the last.

Khartoum - Culture The capital city of the Sudan, the largest African nation, is Khartoum, a name that means "elephant's trunk." Khartoum lies just south of the junction of the Blue Nile and the White Nile rivers . The city has bridge connections with its sister towns, which are Khartoum North and Omdurman. As the country's seat of government and higher education and the center of its commerce and industry, Khartoum is firmly established as the Sudan's greatest metropolis. Most of the people speak Arabic. The city is also Sudan's communications hub. Its rail lines connect with Egypt as well as the cities of Port Sudan on the eastern coast and Al Ubayyid in the central part of Sudan. Khartoum has an international airport, and heavy commercial boat traffic plies each of the Nile rivers.
Places to visit in Khartoum

This resulted in the colourful and diverse cultural Sudanese heritagemanifested in the different forms of dancing of the Sudanese.

Music and Dance Music Sudanese music, in the North, is based on the pentatonic. There are several types of local instruments used in playing music in Sudan, chordophones, idiophones, rhythmic, particularly in the southern Blue Nile regions, the native land of the Ingessana tribes.
Of the most common instruments throughout Sudan is the Tambour. This is a chordophone instrument; with several different names in Sudan, but with basically the same features and principles. Of these names, there are also the Al Rabbaba, and Um Kiki, which is common in western and southern Sudan.
As for the rhythmic instruments, the most common are drums with all of their variations and usage. A well-known type of drums is the Nihas, a large drum, which was used for public announcements and celebrations by many tribes, especially in western Sudan. Also there is the Taar, a smaller instrument that is widespread in the northern tribes, especially the Halfaween (Baraabra) tribes who use the Taar as an accompaniment in their dancing and songs. The Sufi sects also play the Taar in their hymens and religious incantations. Then thre is the Nuggaara, which is another type of drum, common with the tribes of south and west Sudan. Serving the same functions as those of the Taar for the northern Sudan.

40. Sudanarchaeology
Lower Nubia), Makuria in the Dongola Reach, and Alodia in central sudan (with its andits institutions is apparent in many elements of medieval Nubian culture.
http://www.spicey.demon.co.uk/Nubianpage/SUDANARC.htm
ARCHAEOLOGY IN SUDAN The home of the earliest kingdoms and civilisations south of the Sahara, the rich archaeological heritage of Sudan and Nubia still remains little known. In a vast country, archaeological work is still thinly spread and under-resourced. Archaeologists are only at the very beginning of the study of the first great kingdom of Sudan at Kerma (c.2500-1500 BCE), the Kushite/Meroitic Empire (c.800 BCE-350 CE), the prosperous medieval Nubian kingdoms and the great Sultanates of Funj Sennar and Darfur of the post-medieval period. Unfortunately very little archaeological work has ever been carried out in southern Sudan so, as yet, we know very little of its early past. While the name 'Nubia' is commonly associated with the areas of the far north of Sudan, and southern Egypt, medieval Nubia (the land of the 'Nuba'/'Noba') was a much greater region, extending far to the south of Khartoum - while the family of Nubian languages seems to have been widespread across much of what is now west, central and northern Sudan. It has become traditional to refer to all the ancient inhabitants of this region as 'Nubian', although that name is of relatively recent origin, first appearing in historical texts during the mid-first millennium BCE.
