"Our children ... deserve an education worthy of this great nation. Together we will make sure that every child learns and no child is left behind." President George W. Bush At the heart of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is a promise to raise standards for all children and to help all children meet those standards. In support of this goal, President George W. Bush is committed to promoting the very best teaching methods. Well-trained teachers and instruction that is based on research can bring the best teaching approaches to all children and help to ensure that no child is left behind. The law recognizes that parents are their children's first and most important teachers, and, for children to be successful in school, parents and families need to be actively involved in their children's learning. They need to become involved early and stay involved throughout the school year.

Our team of middle school teachers invests not only in our students’ academic success, but also in their ability to think and make decisions for themselves—critical steps in the transition to high school. When students leave the middle grades, they need to have the knowledge and skills to succeed in college-preparatory/honors science. This report provides guidance for a rigorous science curriculum in the middle grades that is based on a solid set of standards. Educators can use this framework in developing course syllabi, lesson plans, assignments, assessments and professional development activities that prepare students for this level of work.
Literacy Across the Curriculum: Setting and Implementing Goals for Grades Six Through 12
(February 2004) NEW

It provides concrete, research-based steps not only to raise reading and writing achievement but also to help students learn more in every class by using literacy skills. The guide focuses on five literacy goals: reading 25 books across the curriculum; writing weekly in all classes; using reading and writing strategies; writing research papers; and taking rigorous language-arts classes.
What Works to Improve Student Achievement in the Middle Grades: A Making Middle Grades Work Research Report
(December 2003) NEW
In 1997 SREB launched a comprehensive middle grades improvement effort, Making Middle Grades Work. This research report examines the design and implementation of this comprehensive improvement effort in 52 middle grades schools in 16 states. The study addresses four basic questions: 1) Is student achievement higher for eighth-graders in the network than for other eighth-graders? 2) Why do schools with similar demographics perform differently? 3) Why is achievement higher for students in schools that have implemented the design more fully? 4) What can states, districts and schools do to improve middle grades achievement? The report includes a summary of findings and recommendations for states, districts and schools.

The communities have diverse populations and a wide range of socioeconomic status, from extreme wealth to poverty. Of the four comprehensive middle schools in the district, Alderwood has the most diverse student population. The student population includes: 36 percent on free and reduced lunch, 7 percent of whom are limited English proficient, 10 percent who qualify for special education, and 35 percent various ethnicities. Beginning in the 2001-02 school year, Alderwood Middle School opted to begin using the Keys for Excellence in Your Schools (KEYS), an educational reform process developed by the National Education Association. Significant Points
  • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
  • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
  • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.

Mission: The mission of ProTeam, a middle school recruitment program, is:
  • to make students who exhibit the potential for success aware of the skills needed to complete college and consider education as a viable career option, and
  • to expand the pool of minority and male teachers available to the public schools of South Carolina.
Fact: South Carolina and the nation face an acute shortage of minority and male teachers, as well as academically talented students who are interested in teaching as a career.
    Overview
The ProTeam Program aims to interest middle school students in the education profession before they become "turned off" to the possibility of a career in teaching. Positive learning experiences and role models are essential to the Program's success. Piloted in twenty middle schools in 1989-90, the ProTeam Program now serves 43 schools serving approximately 900 students annually (see the ProTeam Directory ). ProTeam provides a semester or year-long hands-on course with student driven activities that create opportunities for students to grow as learners.

Making Middle Grades Work Mission The mission of the middle school is to make sure that all students leave eighth grade with the knowledge and skills to be successful without remediation in a college-preparatory curriculum and with plans for what to study to complete high school and prepare for future education and careers. Essential Conditions Commitment – State partners, the local school board, district leaders and the community must commit to implementing the comprehensive improvement framework fully. Planning for continuous improvement – District and school leaders must create an organizational structure and a process that provide teachers and administrators with the time and means to discuss and plan strategies to raise student achievement.  Leaders and teachers decide what to teach, how to teach, what to expect students to learn and how to evaluate student learning. Curriculum – District leaders must encourage a review to assess the curriculum’s alignment with state, national and international standards.  Content and performance standards will define the quantity and quality of work expected at each grade level. Support for professional development – District and school leaders must provide leadership and financial support for professional development that is connected directly to academic standards and gaps in student achievement.  Professional development includes support for teachers as they implement teaching practices that have proven records of effectiveness.
