August 27, 2003 Advanced Information Management (AIM ) software, with many commercial-off-the-shelf components for a low initial cost, easy maintenance, and simple upgradeability. The changeover to the new control system has already resulted in more efficient train operations for SEPTA. The ARINC control center will help improve on-time efficiency and performance while reducing costs. The new primary control center includes 12 operator workstations, 20 large-screen rear projection displays, integrated voice telephone and radio controls, a network management system, and new operator console furnishings. ARINC performed all design, engineering, procurement, software implementation, testing, and training for the project, and also provided a warranty on the system. The ARINC AIM control software platform closes the gap between costly, high-risk, custom-made control solutions and the rigid limitations of product-oriented systems. An open architecture, combined with proven Train Control and SCADA applications, provides a mature, repeatable base, fully capable of meeting many specific customer requirements. Continuous enhancements, derived from Integrated Train Control and

Advance Program
http://www.eecg.toronto.edu/~brown/fpd96.html
FPD'96 features exiting presentations on advanced technology, novel applications of FPGAs, new CAD developments, and commercial products. We anticipate this year's workshop to be one of our best ever. Following the tradition of other FPGA-related workshops, FPD'96 will feature two styles of talks: lectures and posters. In both cases, talks will be accompanied by written papers that will appear in the workshop proceedings. The workshop features a number of excellent submitted and invited presentations, as well as two exciting keynote speeches by leading researchers in their fields: In addition to the above presentations, because this year's workshop is being held at the University of Toronto, FPD'96 will also feature a number of talks marked as "Cider Seminars". Cider seminars are a long-standing tradition in the Computer Engineering Group at the U. of Toronto, in which researchers meet over a cauldron of hot apple cider to critique research in progress. "Ciders" are not accompanied by written papers, but copies of slides will be provided. There will also be vendor exhibits at FPD '96, on Tuesday, May 14. Finally, immediately after the workshop a special full-day course will be offered, in which participants will have the opportunity to gain practical experience implementing digital circuits (in VHDL) in (Xilinx) FPGAs. The course was developed by the

Seattle: the Sequel
Monday, May 19, 2003 In Rem Readings books and other writing about place, process, globalization and media with much greater interest. The NY Prada sotre Rem has achieved pop-architecture status without creating memorable buildings. So with the Seattle Public Library, there is a chance that both the architect and the city can achieve architectural significance come next year when the library opens. Comments (3)
