Pittsburgh International Airport Arrivals: Most flights (except commuter) arrive at the Airside building. Terminals A, B, C, D are really concourses A, B, C, D. Head to the center of the Airside Building. Descend the escalators to take the people mover to the Landside Building. Exit the security area, descend the escalator for baggage claim, rental cars and ground transportation. It typically takes 10 minutes to get from the plane to baggage claim. Departures/Security: There is one security check point for all departures. Security is generally fast, typically about 5-10 minutes, except for Monday mornings (30 minutes). It takes an additional 10 minutes to get from security to your gate. There is a preferred line for USAirways Preferred Customers. USAirways and Baggage Claim: Pittsburgh is a USAirways hub. Baggage for anyone in the back of the plane is lowest priority; those in the front get only slightly better service. Expect a 10 minute wait (or longer) for bags to arrive at baggage claim (in addition to the 10-15 minutes it takes you to get to baggage claim). Other airlines seem to provide faster service.

Yes, if a ban on subway photography as proposed by the MTA is enacted. The current rule, if not always properly enforced, is that amateur photography without lights and ancillary equipment, is permitted under New York State Compilation Codes, Rules and Regulations section 1050.9(c). However, on May 20th, 2004, New York City Transit proposed a ban on amateur photography and videotaping, citing "security concerns". In the New York Times on May 21st, NYCT spokesman Charles F. Seaton was quick to point out that press card holders are exempt, and "commercial enterprises" with "legitimate needs" would be allowed to take pictures with permission obtained in advance. But that's the same as the CURRENT policy for press and commercial enterprises. Given that the MTA charges for commercial photo and film shoots, they want to make it clear that they are not going to sacrifice a revenue stream in the name of enhanced security. We can all see what that means: "Individuals don't have big business to support them. We can hassle them with impunity!" The madness doesn't just extend to New York City. New Jersey Transit has also enacted such a ban, even so far as having police detain and question people taking photos of NJT trains from PUBLIC STREETS. No trespassing was involved, no laws were broken. This has affected regular users of this very web site. Was their camera taken? No. Were they arrested? No. Charged? No. So, no harm no foul right? Well, if you consider being taken into custody, deprived due process and Miranda rights, interviewed by local terrorism agents, "all right". One person's story is

The Metro Section Almost every large city has a metro. It has developed many names around the world; the subway, the tubes, the underground, the metro and many more. But these are not just a series of complicated underground trains which transport people faster, cheaper and more efficiently, they are an expression of architecture and culture. Metro stations develop their own unique styles, and are different all over the world. The purpose of this section of the BIG Buildings website is to simply display pictures of these beautiful and unique Subways. Click on a City's Metro name to see

The architectural elements of the original IRT subway included underground stations, elevated stations, ornamental control houses, kiosks, the main power house, eight power sub-stations, and rolling stock. The architecture of the subway can be classified generally as 20th-century traditional that is, architecture that "derives its sanctions from the traditions of the further past."

Information Architecture
2000 by R. E. Wyllys
Introduction
This lesson discusses ideas associated with the phrase "information architecture" and relates them to aspects of the library- and information-science (LIS) professions.
Origin of the Phrase, "Information Architecture"
Wurman views architecture as the science and art of creating an "instruction for organized space." (See Endnote 1.) He sees the problems of gathering, organizing, and presenting information as closely analogous to the problems an architect faces in designing a building that will serve the needs of its occupants. The architect must
  • ascertain those needs (i.e., must gather information about the needs)

Fifth Information Architecture Summit
Posted by jmelzer on April 08, 2004 I'm still coming down off the high from the 2004 Information Architecture Summit in Austin, Texas. This was the best summit I've attended. The presentations were excellent, and I was really impressed by the variety and depth of the topics. Finally, some case studies! In fact, my only complaint - and I heard this from other people as well - is that there were too many simultaneous sessions and so I missed things I would have liked to hear. I felt this was the best summit socially too. Kudos to Adaptive Path for once again picking up the bar tab one night. We will never see a bunch of IAs completely displace all the redblooded Texans from a Texas bar again, so it was definitely worth whatever they paid. I also have to mention that Austin was a really great town.

Eco Architecture

A 'sustainable city' enables all citizens to meet their own needs and to enhance their well-being without damaging the natural world or endangering the living conditions of other people, now or in the future.
Nobody needs to leave their apartments for practicalities. Although anachronistic stores continue to peddle desirables, most goods are bought over the internet and delivered by droid. The only packaging options are environmental, the only viable products eco-friendly. People leave their towers for pleasure and communion with other citizens. Great public amphitheatres offer free arts and entertainment of every style. Whilst away from their homes, citizens adjust and interact with their homes using their cellphones and bluetooth technologies. Whilst at the amphitheatre, a citizen can direct their home's hot water system to pour a bath and a cup of tea ready for their return. True democracy has finally been put in motion, with live debates and voting procedures electronically enabled by new email secrecy technology. The old dinosaurs of industry have been transformed by people of conscience inside each institution and by consumer pressure. BP has ditched its fossil fuel arm to concentrate and nurture its more lucrative sustainable fuel programs. Doctors are practitioners of science and shamanism. Their holistic practices incorporate magic bullets and post-laser surgery, non-denominational spiritual healing and new-fashioned herbalism, energy stimulation techniques and understanding. People are healthier as everybody eats organic food either from the countryside or from the city's permaculture sites. With all traffic removed from the streets, citizens have remembered the pleasures of walking the green lanes and cycling to their destinations. Stress levels have been equalised by the more moderate pace, and children are able to play in the streets.

Now that the skytrain is finally on track, Bangkokians will finally be able to use their first underground transportation system soon. Even though the citizens of Paris and London have been familiar with this kind of transportation for almost 150 years, both cities have new metros which were finished at almost the same time. These two metro systems represent a massive infusion of new ideas about the architecture and design of public transportation.
But first a little history lesson. London's underground first opened in 1863. After the industrial revolution, London has continuously leapfrogged its system. While the train carries a number of people from the suburbs into the city, the metro system effectively distributes them around the city. The early metro stations in both cities were built using the same standards. While Paris built its l4th metro line to connect the developing areas in the southeast nthe Bibliotheque Francois Mitterand to Madeline area in the centre of Paris, above Saint Rive, London's Jubilee Line Extension augments the existing line which runs from the South Bank and Canary Wharf to Stratford, that was previously isolated from the rest of the network.
photo:Didier Boy de la Tour and MAUBOUSSIN The diversity of the stations has a direct influence on the feelings of the passengers because they can communicate with the space rather than interpreting what the signs mean. The most important thing is that these new metro systems allow natural light to shine through the space. In Paris' Gare de Lyon, there is even a public garden on the platform. Natural light not only brightens up the dark atmosphere of this subterranean network, but also brings an added dimension of space.

Alvar Aalto Nature has been a touchstone for architects and theorists to legitimize their work through biological metaphor or quasi-scientific rationales. Recent formal and theoretical trends in architecture would appear to be well positioned to reengage the topic of biomorphic structures and materials in substantive ways. New technologies offer a seemingly unlimited set of possibilities for the retooling of building systems and materials. Nevertheless, contemporary architectures still seem trapped in formal and metaphorical representations of theories of bio-morphology that prevent the realization of its potential.
