Header KW_breadcrumbs("Home"," > ",0,1,"index.asp",4,5) SUBSTITUTE TEACHER INFORMATION We are glad that you are interested in a Substitute Teacher position with our school district. Substitute teachers provide a valuable service to our students and schools. They are "day-to-day" employees who can decide which days they want to work and in which schools they want to accept assignments. Since substitute teachers follow the school calendar, there is no expectation of employment during school holiday, breaks, or during the summer months. Substituting teaching often meets the needs of individuals changing careers or retirees looking for flexible and rewarding work. Many teachers begin their careers as substitute teachers, providing them an opportunity to get to know school staff and school culture prior to accepting full-time teaching positions. Substitute teaching is also a great way to make employment contacts for positions which may become available in the future. GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

by Mike Collison What if someone offered you an opportunity to get deep into your local secondary schools? Not just a monthly lunch or after-school ball game, but from 8 AM to 2:30 PM.? What if they paid you to hang out with the same students with whom you voluntarily spend your time? Then imagine being a substitute teacher. "Is it good to be alive?" I asked the 22 students just after the bell rang. "My name is Mr. Collison, not Collision. I'll be your substitute today." "Can I call you Mike," a wise guy asks. "Only if you know me in my other life," I retort. "Are you that guy from that youth group or church or something," a girl asks. "Yeah, I work at Orchard Hill, but I love to spend my day off here," I reply sarcastically (laughter erupts). "My friend went on one of your trips," the girl continues.

The Substitute Teachers Survival Guide > Customer Review #2: Excellent guide This was an excellent read; very informative and helpful for anyone who is, or is looking to become, a substitute teacher. Other class routines may include; how attendance is taken or collected, how students line up or when it is appropriate to let students go to the bathroom. Teacher's Schedule: What classes the teacher teaches, TIMES, rooms, and any extra duty assignments. Give directions so subs can locate any rooms they may have to take students to. Also give good details as to what is expected of them during their extra duty assignment. For example; don't just tell sub "lunch duty", but give them directions as to what they are looking for and who to go to if there is a major problem. Class Rules.

A Substitute for Education: When the teacher's away As sub shortage grows, quality control declines in nation's classrooms Sunday, January 07, 2001 By Jane Elizabeth, Post-Gazette Education Writer When the teacher doesn't come to class, who fills in? In schools across the nation, the substitute teachers in those classrooms often not only aren't trained in the subject they're supposed to be teaching they're not teachers at all. A two-month investigation by the Post-Gazette has uncovered the fact that many schools, frantic to find "subs" for absent teachers, are turning classes over to PTA moms, waitresses, college students and even high school students. And the number of untrained, non-teachers taking over the country's classrooms is growing at an astounding rate. Each day, about 5 million children walk into 274,000 classrooms nationwide and find a substitute. Students today will spend at least one full year with a substitute by the time they graduate from high school a figure that's higher in poor schools and destined to increase. That's a full year with someone who often isn't nearly as qualified as the regular classroom teacher. In fact, parents who bother to check on who's subbing in their child's classroom may be surprised at the lack of qualifications, training and hiring standards.

    Information for Physical Educators
Enclosed below are some guidelines that you may consider using when it comes time for you to have a substitute teacher cover your classes for a day. These tips and guidelines were submitted by Teri Charpenel who teaches at Fulton Elementary School in Tinley Park, IL . She includes this information in a three ring binder with with each individual paper in sheet protectors. Then, she puts tab dividers in the binder so that my substitute can easily locate the appropriate sections (listed below). Please understand that these are guidelines and the sections here are not all-inclusive. Your substitute teacher binder will include unique information that is geared for your teacher setting. Our sincere thanks to Teri for sharing this important information with PE Central. We hope it is useful in your teaching situation. My Philosophy about Physical Education Include here a brief statement describing how you view physical education. This may include your philosophy. This gives the substitute an idea about the importance of physical education. May want to include a copy of our professions National Standards or the developmentally appropriate documents (published by NASPE ) as well.
