Ling 10 Usage, Mechanics, Style, and Writing July 16, 2002 Usage refers to grammar, mechanics to punctuation. Both operate at the sentence level. Style refers to the image projected by an entire text (i.e. it operates at the discourse level). We'll cover the sentence-level issues first, but not because you should consider them first in your writing. Remember: Writing is a multi-step process involving both writing and editing. When writing, go as quickly as possible without concern for usage, mechanics, spelling, or any other technical issues. Get your ideas on paper. When editing, you can consider all of the issues discussed below. With practice, you'll be able to get the grammar correct during writing and focus on larger issues during editing. Usage

    • Footnotes (Education/learning English)
The main purpose of a footnote is to acknowledge the source of any direct or indirect quotation of any idea, opinion, or factual material, which you have taken (not necessarily in quotation) from another author or authority. Footnotes can also be used to expand, or supplement, statements made in the body of your essay with information, which is peripheral to your main argument but still considered relevant.
It is most important that you supply sufficient information in your footnotes to enable the reader (or marker in this case) to independently consult the sources used. The information taken from fluid electronic archives, as might be found on the Internet, present a problem here; but you must always include in your reference the date you accessed a particular site or archive.
Insert a number in your text, at the end of a sentence, for each footnote. Make the numbers run consecutively for each page. This means the first footnote on each page will be numbered one. Place the footnotes in numerical order at the bottom of the page where the reference occurs. If you are using a word processor it is probably best to run the numerical order through the entire essay.

Introduction Discourse Analysis in Linguistics The field of linguistics has just seen the publication of a comprehensive resource for discourse analysis Barbara Johnstone's new text Discourse Analysis. Johnstone describes the method of discourse analysis as a heuristic: [T]he basic question a discourse analyst asks is "Why is this text the way it is? Why is it no other way?" [...] We can divide the questions that need to be asked about a text into six broad categories. Each of these aspects of text-building is both a source of constraint a reason why texts are typically some ways and not others and a resource for creativity, as speakers, signers, and writers express themselves by manipulating the patterns that have become conventional. (9) The six categories are as follows: Discourse is shaped by the world, and discourse shapes the world.

Brief History of Computers and Composition Editing Philosophy and Profile ... Features of the Journal Formatting and Style Conventions Glossary Global Changes FORMATTING AND STYLE CONVENTIONS Computers and Composition follows the style guidelines in the 4th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA Manual); however, due to the growth in the study of relationships between computers and the teaching of writing, we have had to modify and/or clarify the way we handle some situations. In this section, we alert you both conventional style choices and to the exceptions to the APA style; present those style guidelines for situations unanticipated by the APA manual; and provide examples to clarify style questions that frequently seem to arise. Assistant Editors must be careful not to make changes too quickly. As you work with a number of manuscripts, you learn what can be changed and what must remain as is, even if you wouldn't have written it that way. Of course, Assistant Editors correct grammar and punctuation errors. However, you must be able to indicate in the appropriate handbooks the guidelines that support your suggested changes.
Apostrophes Computers and Composition uses the smart apostrophes format (') rather than the straight apostrophe ('). Often, because authors submit manuscripts as Rich-Text Format documents, quotation marks are converted to straight quotes. Assistant Editors should mark these as they copy edit manuscripts.

Baron answers questions (as "Dr. Grammar") and offers advice on dealing with the Language Police (William Safire and his ilk), the demands of politically correct language, the peculiarities of English spelling, jargon, plagiarism, and sundry other topics. Baron, Dennis E. Grammar and Good Taste: Reforming the American Language . New Haven: Yale Univ. Press, 1982. After the Revolution, English supplanted Latin and Greek as the dominant language of instruction in American schools. Patriots sought to differentiate American from British English by establishing native standards of spelling, grammar, and pronunciation. Some advocated the formation of an American Academy, like the French Academy, to set these standards. The authors of popular grammar textbooks also attempted to set standards. Although no uniform "Federal grammar" emerged, the link between correct grammar and patriotism led to the association of correctness with good morals in general, and hence with social prestige. The link between grammar and morality also fostered intense anxiety about correctness that continues to this day. See: Francis Christensen, "A Generative Rhetoric of the Paragraph" [
