Program Overview
Please note that these documents are a work in progress! Items contained within this section are subject to change. Transition to Teach programs are designed for career changers who already hold bachelor's degrees in a content major related to a secondary teaching field, such as English or mathematics. Their purpose is to allow career changers to successfully enter the teaching profession in a timely fashion. These programs are most appropriate for those who already have a foundation of experiences in a P-12 or similar educational setting. They focus on the last four semesters of a professional education program, primarily on teaching methodology and student teaching. Each program consists of 18 credit hours of professional coursework. Purdue University Calumet will begin accepting applications for the T3 program in Summer 2002. However, due to the extensive admission process, the first cohort of T3 will not begin in coursework until Spring 2003. To be a part of the T3 program, candidates must commit to a continuous 16 months of coursework before eventual licensure. Therefore, the first cohort will be completing the program at the end of Spring 2004.
Applying to the Program
Applicants for the program must have ALL admission requirements completed prior to taking the first course in the T3 program. Requirements for the T3 program were developed by reviewing our current program standards to determine the most effective way for applicants to demonstrate attainment of the existing requirements for our Teacher Education programs. The T3 candidates will be entering the program at the teaching methods level (junior year for traditional candidates). As a result, T3 candidates must demonstrate the knowledges, performances and dispositions that are required of all Teacher Education program prior to taking the teaching methods courses.

Armstrong Teacher Educator Award
Portfolio Assessment Workshop, Fall 2003 On November 7th, the 2003-2004 Armstrong Teacher Educators participated in a professional development workshop on the topic of "Portfolio Assessment." During the morning session, Dr. Ginette Delandshere discussed a recent article examining the quality of evidence in pre-service teacher portfolios. This lecture elicited thoughtful dialogue on current practices in portfolio assessment and strategies for improving this form of evaluation at all levels of education. Following Dr. Delandshere's talk, Drs. Thomas Gregory and Genny Williamson described the use of portfolios in two notable IUB School of Education programs, "A Community of Teachers" and "Teaching All Learners." Following a working luncheon with IUB faculty, the Armstrong Teacher Educators heard from Shelly Wilfong on the topic of induction teaching portfolios and then Cyndia Moriarty who spoke on teaching portfolios and the national certification process. Dr. Don Cunningham and Suzanne Sanborn concluded the workshop by talking with the Armstrong Teacher Educators about the Inquiry Learning Forum (ILF), a web-based system that connects university faculty, elementary and high school teachers, and university students from around the world. The next day at the "Call to Teach" event, many of the Armstrong Teacher Educators helped to honor over 150 students who had been accepted into the teacher education program at IUB. The guest speaker for the event was Robert Pickett, the 2003 Indiana Teacher of the Year.

Like other professionals, teachers need evidence of their growth and achievement over time. The professional portfolio is a vehicle for collecting and presenting that evidence. For many of us, it's just practicing what we preach. We encourage our students to select examples of their work over time to demonstrate how much they've learned, and we must do the same. Portfolios allow us to become reflective about what it is we do. And they allow us to document the practices we'd like to preserve and even pass on to others. "Portfolios have much to offer the teaching profession," writes Dr. Kenneth Wolf, of the University of Colorado. "When teachers carefully examine their own practices, those practices are likely to improve. The examples of accomplished practice that portfolios provide also can be studied and adapted for use in other classrooms." And it's more than just a good idea. In many places, teachers and administrators must now renew their professional licenses. What to Include A professional teaching portfolio is more than a hodge-podge of lesson plans and lists of professional activities. It is a careful record of specific accomplishments attained over an extended period of time. Wolf suggests that portfolios include the following:
