Highway scare students start internships
Story Tools MIAMI, Florida (CNN) Three medical students who were stopped on a Florida highway for a highly publicized, 17-hour terror investigation, have begun an internship in Miami, a Muslim activist from Florida said Sunday. Ayman Gheith, 27, Kambiz Butt, 25, and Omer Choudhary, 23, were driving September 13 to Miami, where they were to begin their internship at Larkin Community Hospital, when they were stopped on Interstate 75 by police. RELATED 'Bring it down' was about a car, students' lawyer says Terror scare men: 'We want our dignity back' She said, they said Florida authorities had been told to be on the lookout for the men, who were traveling in two cars, after a woman reported she heard them make suspicious comments at a restaurant in north Georgia. The men were cleared and released after 17 hours on the side of the road, but the hospital, citing "threatening, ethnic, racial e-mails directed at Muslim-Americans," decided to turn the students away. "We felt that the students' medical education would be adversely compromised due to the current national attention," Larkin Community Hospital President Dr. Jack Michel said at the time.

North Star, Self-directed Learning for Teens: Supporting unschooling teens and their families since 1995.
Supporting unschooling teens and their families since 1995.
The Problem...
Some teenagers don't find school life inspiring.
  • They don't find their studies to be meaningful.
  • They don't have enough time to pursue their real interests.
  • The pace is too slow or too fast.
  • They don't feel nurtured by the social environment.
  • There's too much homework and they are stressed out.
  • They argue with their parents about schoolwork.
  • They are discouraged to be working for the grade rather than the joy of learning.
The Solution...
The North Star Self-directed Solution North Star students leave school. They embark upon non-compulsory, community-based, self-directed learning programs that include a variety of activities:
  • Independent academic projects Academic classes at North Star Tutorials at North Star Creative classes and projects at North Star and in the community Internships or volunteering with community businesses or charities Pursuing their passions and following their own North Stars in myriad ways
North Star provides support for all aspects of a self-directed program.

    http://www.waikato.ac.nz/film/handbook/internship.html
    STUDENT INTERNSHIP INFORMATION
    The details below apply to
Taken towards a major in Screen and Media Studies (as part of the BA degree) or towards major in Media Studies (as part of the BCS degree) Course coordinators: Gareth Schott and Lisa Perrott
    Internal assessment/examination ratio: 1:0
Papers limited to 5 students per semester. The internship papers provide students with an opportunity to encounter and reflect on workplace practice in the screen and media industry. The experience gained helps to prepare students for a career within screen or media.
    Selecting an internship site
Students are responsible for selecting the internship organisation. Occasionally, staff in the Screen and Media department become aware of potential projects, so students should contact either Gareth Schott ( g.schott@waikato.ac.nz ) or Lisa Perrott ( lperrott@waikato.ac.nz ) as soon as possible to discuss the internship topic. Once an organisation has been selected (in consultation with the appropriate staff member), an Internship Learning Contract must be completed. This contract should be signed by the Screen and Media Staff member who will be supervising the internship, and the supervisor at the placement organisation. DOWNLOAD a CONTRACT as a Word document Top of page
    Expectations
The period of time spend at the placement organisation will differ depending on the circumstances. However, as an estimation, 100 hours is indicative of the time necessary to successfully complete an internship. Ideally, the internship should be 'hands on', allowing the student to experience the day to day activities of the internship organisation.
