The Office of Aviation Safety has internship opportunities available throughout the year for undergraduate and graduate students with aviation backgrounds. These internships are located in the Office of Aviation Safety’s in ten Regional Offices. These internships are offered on an unpaid basis under the provisions of the Student Volunteer Program. These internships, which last approximately three to four months, provide aviation students with a hands-on work experience directly related to the aviation industry. These internships allow aviation students an opportunity to explore aviation career options as well as develop personal and professional skills. Occasionally, depending on the availability of funds, a student volunteer may be hired back the following year into a paid position under the provisions of the NTSB’s Cooperative Education Program. These paid COOP positions may then lead to a permanent position with the NTSB upon graduation. Description of work:
Interns will work under the direction of an NTSB aviation accident investigator and assist them in conducting selected accident/incident investigations. This includes assisting in the on-scene portion of the investigation as well as conducting the post-accident research needed to develop the accident sequence of events and proposed probable cause of the accident. Interns will also write preliminary accident reports and assist in writing final factual reports and briefs. A copy of the Position Description for a Student Volunteer can be found on the NTSB web site.
