May 20th 2004 Washington Times Article Welcome to the Lashof Violins Web Site. Our goal or mission is to provide useful and truthful information about violins, their care and maintenance , and when possible their value. We will also be highlighting instruments and special accessories for sale. As a quick introduction, I am originally from the Washington, DC Metro area. I started my music career at age 8 on piano and soon switched to the violin. In 1973 I made my first violin under the tutelage of Willis M. Gault(1908-1991) . In 1977 I enrolled in the Chicago School of Violin Making taught by master Tschu Ho Lee. After graduating in 1981 I went to work for Weavers Violin Shop in Maryland as the cello and bass repair specialist, also continuing to make instruments selling them through the shop. As the senior repairmen and only violin maker on staff, I performed the more complicated restorations that came into the shop. In 1988 in order to have unrestrained access to my customers I opened my own shop. Just 10 miles north of the Washington Beltway in Gaithersburg MD, I make sell repair , and rent violin family instruments. To date I have made approximately 150 instruments

The Classic Banjo Resource Overview The 5-string classic banjo style evolved in the mid-19th century. By the century's end, the banjo had been adopted by the musical worlds of urban sophisticates and the working class in North America and England. Composers wrote elaborate pieces as well as lighter music for both professional and amateur banjoists. The banjo became a popular instrument for musical soirees and parlor performances. A three-finger picking technique was employed, but unlike the picking styles of bluegrass banjo, the classic banjoist played a gut-strung banjo and did not use fingerpicks. If you are one of the folks who like the old format, or think they will be collectible, get the VHS instructional tapes while you can because we are phasing them out. They are now all 50% of the regular price. You might even get some extra bargains since we'll drop the prices even lower as soon as we have few enough to fit in our bargain bin.
