81. The Strings
This is usually the first choice of musicians who want to learn a string instrument (unless they have viola, cello, or bass friends). Violin.

The Strings
Violin
The violin is by far the most common orchestral instrument. It is also the smallest out of all the strings and has the highest pitch. This is usually the first choice of musicians who want to learn a string instrument (unless they have viola, cello, or bass friends). Viola
The viola is slightly larger than the violin and has a deeper pitch in comparision. It is also in the "middle register" of the string family. Although not as popular as the violin, it is still a vital part of the orchestra. Cello
The cello is still bigger than the violin and viola. It has a beautiful, mellow sound. The cello must rest on the floor because it is too big to be held like the violin or viola. Bass
The bass is the biggest instrument in the string section. It also plays the widest assortment of music from classical to broadway to jazz. Although it appears the same size as the cello in the picture, it actually about 1 1/2 to 2 times taller.

http://www.ithacastring.com/articles.html
From Strings Magazine September/October 1998
In this article, Darol reviews the NV violin. A Dynamic Unit: The NV Electric Violin These days, there's an embarrassment of riches in the multifarious and whimsical shapes available that can be played like a violin. Just about any form that can be fitted under the chin and bowed is now available to the adventurous fiddler. And the sound of these instruments is improving. The Zeta Strados, Tucker Barrett's four-, five-, and six-string Luma and KoaLuma models, and Rich Barbera's newest fivestring Acoustic-Electrics, to name a few, have taken electric-violin tone to impressive new levels.
But here's a tip about a new instrument that, tonally, is as far beyond other electric violins as a $40,000 modern instrument is beyond the factory fiddle you played in high school. Eric Aceto's NV five-string electric violin, while at the high end of the price spread at about $5,000, is a must for the regularly performing professional violinist who absolutely has to play amplified and for whom tonal nuance is critical. Its builders have departed from conventional wisdom about amplified tone by envisioning the pickup and body as a dynamic unit, and by making changes in the body to modify the pickup's sound. It is capable of tonal colors and a dynamic range much closer to an acoustic violin than any other electric I've ever tried. I believe it constitutes a quantum leap forward in electric-violin tone.

Civil War music band. Period music performed on authentic instruments. MP3 samples of music and or video for sale, coming events.
http://southern.hypermart.net/
The purpose of the 2nd South Carolina String Band is to recreate (as authentically as possible) the music of the Civil War. In the "Southern Soldier" album the listener will hear the music of the 19th century played on 19th century period instruments in the appropriate style. This is the music as it truly sounded to the soldiers of the Civil War.
NEWS:

The 2nd South Carolina String Band is one of the most active and popular Civil War camp bands in America. With three albums and an hour-long video of music to their credit, these boys are enjoyed by reenactors and anyone else who like a rollicking good time. Their music is boisterous and high spirited, evoking the days when soldiers entertained their comrades around the campfire with the tunes of minstrel composers like Dan Emmett and Stephen Foster. History
The first type of string instrument was a simple musical bow. This can still be found in Africa and South America. Harps and lyres appeared about 5,000 years ago in ancient Egypt and Sumeria. Also developed in ancient Egypt, Greece and India was a long box of wood over which one or more strings were stretched. The bow was first applied to the lute in the 10th century. From this developed the members of the modern violin family. These instruments became known as the string family since they all had strings. The development the individual instruments is discussed in its section.
    Description
A string instrument is defined as an instrument that has strings that produce sound. A vibration is produced when rubbed by a bow, plucked, or struck. A resonator is needed to hear the vibrating string. This is accomplished by the vibrating of the wooden box with air inside. The pitch is determined by the length, thickness and tautness of the string. The notes are produced by shortening the vibrating length. This is done by pressing the string against the body of the neck with the finger.

A string instrument is a musical instrument that produces sound via vibrating strings. They may also be called chordophones , a name deriving from the Hornbostel-Sachs scheme of musical instrument classification In order for a string instrument to produce sound, its string or strings must vibrate. There are two common ways of bringing this about: instruments such as the guitar and kora are plucked, either by a finger or thumb, or by some other device such as a plectrum ; while instruments like the cello and rebec are usually played by drawing a bow across the strings. However, instruments normally bowed are occasionally plucked (this is known as pizzicato ), and instruments normally plucked are sometimes played with a bow ( Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin sometimes played the electric guitar this way, for example). Instruments which are normally bowed such as the violin, etc, must be bowed perpendicularly to the string, usually at a point half way between the end of the fingerboard and the bridge ( arco ). Bowing very the near the bridge (known as
