By far the most numerous part of the orchestra, the strings are especially fascinating to watch. The bowing is carefully marked in each musical score, and during the concert you can see the arms and bows sweep across the strings, all going up and down in unison. A wonderful "sound-sight!" The strings may also be tapped with the bow or plucked with the players' fingers. The Violin The most important of the bowed instruments has a long and colorful background. It probably originated in China, traveled west through India and Persia, and finally reached Western Europe. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the violin was perfected by great Italian craftsmen, and their instruments, many still in use, are among the most valuable in the world. The violins are divided into "first" and "second" sections, each with its own musical responsibilities.

http://kr.cs.ait.ac.th/~radok/physics/i4.htm
Acoustics I4 Sound instruments Strings A string is a straight, threadlike, elastic body (intestine, metal), which is stretched by tension and all points of which apart from its ends are free to move. When it is displaced from its position of rest (by striking with a hammer, rubbed with a bow, tugged with a finger) and then released, it flings back, bypasses its position of rest , returns, etc. If its period is large enough, it gives a sound. The law for the ensuing vibrations can be explained by the Monochord (Greek: monos = single, Fig. 319 ) - effectively a string - the length and tension of which can be changed measurably and which can be replaced by another string. You tighten the string by weights, the length of the vibrating part is determined by the clamps N and U. The tone is only weak in the absence of a resonance board, but, in return, the Monochord is clear of vagueness, which would come with it. You find the number of oscillations per second in dependence on the material, the dimensions and the tension of the string. It is the larger, that is, the tone is the higher, the shorter and thinner is the string, the smaller is the specific weight of the material the larger the tension. The dependence of the Hertz number n on these parameters is given by the formula of Brook Taylor with d the diameter, l the length, p the specific weight of the string, g·m

58. American Balalaika Symphony
Performs symphonic and folk music on the balalaika and domra, traditional Russian pluckedstring instruments, combining the best of Russian and American traditions.
http://www.balalaika.biz
The American Balalaika Symphony
is a unique symphony orchestra based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area that performs music ranging from folk to symphonic. A balalaika orchestra is similar to a traditional symphony orchestra but uses Russian plucked string instruments such as the balalaika and domra rather than Western bowed instruments like the violin and cello. The orchestra's unique sound is rounded out by accordion and bayan (Russian button accordion), gusli (an ancient Russian table harp), and full wind and percussion sections. The sound is distinctive but familiarly symphonic. The American Balalaika Symphony was founded in 2001 by conductor and artistic director Peter Trofimenko. The group consists of an internationally diverse mixture of professional and amateur musicians in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The ABS is seeking musicians to play with our group. We also welcome those who are interested in contributing to the orchestra in non-musical ways. Please visit our "join" page to find out more and then contact us by phone or email.
