Photo by Eric and Theresa Van Dyke. See also: New York State Psychological Assocation Most psychologists spend their days listening to patients talk. On May 21, the psychologists did most of the talking, advocating at the state Capitol in Albany for passage of two important mental health bills. During a lobby day sponsored by New York State United Teachers and its affiliate, the New York State Psychological Association, psychologists promoted two proposed bills. The Fair Insurance Treatment Act (S-5381, A-4506) would require that every insurance carrier or health maintenance organization that provides coverage for medical or hospital care in New York also provide mental health coverage. That coverage would have to be equitable with other medical services, both in cost and coverage. "To treat mental health different from physical doesn't make sense," said Marianne Jackson, a Brooklyn psychologist. "If people don't get treatment, it can lead to violence and jails," said Gayle Berg, a Nassau County psychologist. "The other systems get far more costly."

One of the most important things we can do for patients is teach them about stress management. Even better, we can learn these lessons ourselves and then model them for our patients. Although there are many approaches to stress management, this article lists 10 ways for reducing stress that are practical, beneficial and which even busy physicians can start implementing in their patients' and their own lives.
    Main Article
Stress is the most common cause of ill health in our society, probably underlying as many as 70% of all visits to family doctors. It is also the one problem that every doctor shares with every patient. This presents physicians with two advantages:
    • It is an issue we can relate to experientially so we can use ourselves as a reference point. In studying and better understanding stress, we can derive personal as well as professional benefits.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm occurred or was threatened. Traumatic events that may trigger PTSD include violent personal assaults, natural or human-caused disasters, accidents, or military combat. Among those who may experience PTSD are military troops who served in the Vietnam and Gulf Wars; rescue workers involved in the aftermath of disasters like the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C.; survivors of the Oklahoma City bombing; survivors of accidents, rape, physical and sexual abuse, and other crimes; immigrants fleeing violence in their countries; survivors of the 1994 California earthquake, the 1997 North and South Dakota floods, and hurricanes Hugo and Andrew; and people who witness traumatic events. Family members of victims also can develop the disorder. PTSD can occur in people of any age, including

What is stress? Everyone feels stressed at times, however young or old they are. We feel under pressure, worried, upset, sad, angry... or maybe a mixture of uncomfortable feelings. It’s usually because things in our life are difficult, or because we aren’t getting on well with other people. Most of these stressful things last only a short time – then they get sorted out. There are many ordinary situations that can make you feel stressed for a longer time. Your school work can pile up, or preparing for exams can seem like it’s taking forever. At school you may be teased or bullied, or have problems with teachers. At home you may have arguments with parents, brothers or sisters, or close friends. Stress can be even worse if you are hit a lot or sexually abused, or see your parents fighting. It can be particularly upsetting if your family is breaking up, or someone close to you is ill, or dies. The effects of stress This depends on how severe the stress is and how long it goes on for. It also depends a lot on the individual. We all react in different ways to stress. How you deal with it depends on your personality and on how well you’ve learnt to cope with things. It also depends on whether you’ve got someone you trust to talk to. Understanding and support from other people makes it much easier to cope with stress. Feeling alone makes it harder.
