A "Rider" navigates the board down a paved road or path. Turning consists of a subtle shifting of weight (from side to side), resulting in what is known as "lean steering". All buzz-words aside, in the sport of Street Luge, speed is your friend. The faster that a rider travels, the easier it is for that person to maneuver the sled. Competitive speeds often exceed 60 mph. In the past, the "vehicles of speed" were constructed out of 2"x4" pieces of lumber with metal roller skates nailed to the bottom. Over the course of 25 years, evolution and technology have taken a firm root in the sport. The result is a racing sled designed on computers to both push exacting tolerances, and to fit individual pilot dimensions. Some sled designers proceed a step further by utilizing materials such as advanced composites, and plastics into the construction process. There are no standard sled designs, or template in the sport. As a general rule, a sled is roughly 18 inches longer than the height of the pilot. The average sled weighs between 26 and 40lbs. Clad in both full body one-piece leathers, and an aerodynamic helmet the most unique feature about the sport is its system of breaking. Stopping the sled is accomplished with the feet. Because they last longer, pilots have turned to placing retread from tires on their shoe soles.

The only thing separating you from the concrete is an aluminum board. Your feet rests on pegs, your back is flat on the board and your head is slightly elevated so you are able to see where you are going. You are reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h. The only equipment protecting you is a motorcycle helmet and a leather body suit. Welcome to the extreme world of street luging. The concept is actually quite simple: up to six racers go head to head bumping and passing each other and the first one to cross the finish line claims victory. A street luge is operated by someone appropriately called the 'pilot'. Tom Mason, a professional street luger and stunt man, affectionately known as The Bad Boy of Street Luge, summed it up best when he said, "For a few seconds, I am truly flying like superman and feel like a speeding bullet." It is unknown exactly how street luge originated, however, it began in the 70's. It evolved from skateboarding and has obviously been taken to a more extreme level. The first organized event is said to have taken place in 1978. Unfortunately, it ended in disaster when athletes and spectators were injured. It was not until 1995, that street luge was presented to a national audience at the X Games.
