Kenniston Hill Inn The Maine Storytellers Festival is Maine's most active performing arts organization dedicated to Maine's traditional art of storytelling. Throughout the year the Maine Storytellers Festival, with the help of our corporate sponsors, stages a series of ten evenings of Maine humor and stories at theaters and halls from Kennebunk to Camden. Funds raised at these popular sold-out events are used to sponsor such things as our popular Stories in the Schools program - one of many worthwhile projects sponsored annually by our organization. The goals of the Maine Storytellers Festival are simple: use "gifted, professional storytellers to draw and entertain enthusiastic audiences, while passing ahead to Maine people the unique stories of our state, and to let these audiences experience the magic created when a skilled storyteller spins a classic Maine yarn!" While having the time of their lives, folks at our festivals not only come away laughing , they also come away with a deeper appreciation of our state's unique heritage.

Archeology and Storytelling

Use our free online Teaching Tools to create custom worksheets, puzzles and quizzes on this topic!
Students will understand the following: Both individual families and whole cultures learn about their pasts by collecting and analyzing stories and artifacts. Not all archaeological finds readily reveal their history to archeologists. You may want to ask students to bring family heirlooms to class (see Procedures). World map for reference as students tell family stories

TONSIL: Storytelling blog Wednesday, October 22, 2003 Storytelling declining in Shanghai, too
(via XINHUA online ):
The Shanghai Daily is noting a massive drop-off in storytelling theatres in the area, blaming modern media in part, for exposing audiences to fashion trends and pop stars at the expense of the folk arts, like pingtan. Pingtan, by the way, is a regional form of storytelling (popular in East China's Jiangsu, Zhejiang provinces and Shanghai) that typically involves two storytellers, accompanied by music or prefaced by sung ballads, telling long serial tales. This art thrived in the early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) with many of its stories dating to that time. Here's a summary by Eric Miller, of the University of Pennsylvania: pingtan is a collective term, denoting two forms of storytelling: pinghua (narration without music); and tanci (narration with music, also known as, prosimetric performance, or chantefable).  The prose of pinghua, and sections of tanci, is delivered in a styled form of speaking that is different from everyday speech; it has a recognizable cadence.  Both pinghua and tanci allow insertion of commentary, anecdotes, poems, and descriptive set pieces; and both involve long, often serialized, tales.  In tanci, the story is told in alternating passages of prose and rhymed metrical verse, plus comic-relief passages, singing, and instrumental accompaniment.  In olden days, a story could take three months to tell, with an hour session each day: today, two weeks is usually the limit....

say? A recent article
Why so Tech, Beck?
Never before have the participants in a medium been so required to learn arcane, technical incantations before they are allowed to communicate in said medium (which explains the continuing appeal of AOL to the new Internet user). Why is technology so interwoven with the web? For one reason, the web is a many-to-many technology. In older mass media, say television, few people produced and broadcast their own TV shows. TV is a one to many technology. Not so the web. Tools like Blogger have made self-publishing on the web a no- brainer. Now you have many speaking to many. Before, no one had to be aware of how a TV set actually worked.
The Global Campfire
Great Handwriting, Lousy Narrative
I just attended and spoke at an industry-wide web builder conference. The topics included XML, JavaScript acceleration, hand-held devices, user experience design, efficient systems development models, efficient web business models, how to use Flash, how to use Dreamweaver, how to write effective email newsletters, etc. In other words, there were lots of presentations on site development, and lots of presentations on tools. There were even some presentations on content. But where were the presentations on how to tell a story in this medium? To draw an analogy, what if this had been a conference on how to write a novel? How would it have compared? Well, they would have taught me how to come up with a good story outline (content). They would have taught me how to use ball point pens, felt tip pens, pencils, and various word processing programs (tools). They would have taught me some grammar (programming languages).

how to make an author's heart beat faster
on the forum, someone posted this: Just a note to say "Hello" from a lurker; Looking forward to the new book but decided not to enter the contest and wait for the fully finished version. I love the excitement of heading down to my local bookseller to get the new book the first day it comes out. And to this person I wanted to say thank you. That idea is exciting for me, too. When Into the Wilderness came out I happened to actually see somebody buying a copy. This was in a bookstore in Canada, I was waiting in line, and I noticed what he was holding. I felt a real jolt, I suppose what actors and directors must feel if they stand in the back of a theater and watch people come in to see a movie they've made. Delight and fear and curiosity, all mixed up. That person in line wants to read the book I wrote. This is somebody being drawn in by the title or the cover or something else, and choosing that book over the thousands right there available to be read, then paying money, and sitting down, and spending time , and actually reading.

Bubbles Louie The Clown Bubbling Fun for any Occasion
Once upon a time, long ago...
Within the universe with all stars aglow....
A clown was formed this was my dad;
He began bubbling and was never sad.
Although at heart he was always one,
he decided to take his clowning talent and have tons of fun!
He began with a costume and outstanding tricks,
the act he put together made a really neat mix.
The kids laughed, smiled, clapped and cheered,
there was no magic that he ever feared. Each year he got brighter and his image more strong, He became the bestest clown around not after long. With birthdays, weddings and functions of all kinds, for balloons and face painting everyone stood in two straight lines. He will brighten your day or even your night, His clownish ways will make every family get together out of sight! To this day my dad is #1, I don't think the true clown inside will ever be done. So if you want some bubbling, joy and laughter, look upon this site right here after. In his audience there will never be a frown, for my dad is the amazing

Elementary and middle students can now enjoy locating information on the Middle Ages! Learn about the people of the Middle Ages, Castles, and Knights by studying their Tales and Legends. Q uestion: Can you create and tell a story that will teach your peers about the people and ideas of the middle ages? back to the top B ackground I nformation A long time ago in the beginning of the European Middle Ages there were no books. As a matter of fact very few people even knew how to read or write. Nevertheless, there were many fascinating stories stories of heroic deeds and evil monsters- told by storytellers, minstrels, and poets. These stories reflect the beliefs and concerns of the people of the Middle ages and give us a glimpse of their daily lives. Also, these stories provide us with a sense of the social, cultural, and political forces that affected behavior and motivated change. Eventually, Christian Monks, Nobleman, and other learned men began to record and illustrate these stories capturing them for people throughout the ages to share. These stories provide an appealing way to trace and retrace the social history of the Middle Ages. back to the top T asks Model Storytelling
