Intergeneration Foundation’s
Annual Storytelling Contest
(One of our favorite storytellers, Sean Astin, most recently of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, shown here with Intergeneration Foundation's Executive Director, Lisa Miller)
The contest's goal is to recognize storytelling as a way to connect different generations. An age-old tradition to inform, educate and entertain, storytelling can be the glue that brings us closer together. Write a story(fiction, non-fiction, or a combination) that you think will increase intergenerational unity and understanding. Feature characters from at least two different generations.
Writing ideas include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Write about one of your favorite stories that an older person, like a grandparent, told you.
2. Write a story that you think you might tell your child or grandchild when you grow up.
3. Write about why you like hearing stories from your parents or grandparents.
4. Make up a story that an older person might tell to a younger person.

Exploring Ancient World Cultures
Essays on the Ancient Near East
Storytelling, the Meaning of Life,
and The Epic of Gilgamesh
Arthur A. Brown Stories do not need to inform us of anything. They do inform us of things. From The Epic of Gilgamesh , for example, we know something of the people who lived in the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in the second and third millenniums BCE. We know they celebrated a king named Gilgamesh; we know they believed in many gods; we know they were self-conscious of their own cultivation of the natural world; and we know they were literate. These things we can fix or establish definitely. But stories also remind us of things we cannot fix of what it means to be human. They reflect our will to understand what we cannot understand, and reconcile us to mortality.
We read The Epic of Gilgamesh
To see for ourselves the meaning of a story, we need, first of all, to look carefully at what happens in the story; that is, we need to look at it as if the actions and people it describes actually took place or existed. We can articulate the questions raised by a character's actions and discuss the implications of their consequences. But we need to consider, too, how a story is put together how it uses the conventions of language, of events with beginnings and endings, of description, of character, and of storytelling itself to reawaken our sensitivity to the real world. The real world is the world without conventions, the unnameable, unrepresentable world in its continuity of action, its shadings and blurrings of character, its indecipherable patterns of being. The stories that mean most to us bring us back to our own unintelligible and yet immeasurably meaningful lives.

55. Miss Carol's Magical Puppetime
These delightful and interactive puppet shows combine puppetry with music, magic, storytelling, comedy and audience participation; good for all ages.
http://www.magicalpuppetime.com/
Miss Carol features her own handcrafted marionette puppets in a cabaret variety show where puppets perform a vast array of acts referred to as vignettes (short skits). They sing, dance, play musical instruments, do comical things, tell stories and jokes, perform circus tricks like juggling, and perform magical illusions and more. They appear very lifelike and may walk right up to audience members. As the puppeteer pulls a few strings, the marionettes captivate audiences and leave them spellbound. Included are vignettes from many familiar childhood favorite fairy tales, animal tales, nursery rhymes and original adaptations and parodies. Additional entertainment choices are also available to add to the above described variety show such as having your own theme orientation (see " themes " under "Meet the Puppets" above) , adding a fairygram (see " fairygrams " under "Meet the Puppets" above) , putting on and using finger puppets, petting puppets and/or helping to manipulate a marionette, playing musical instruments, helping with magic tricks, having their faces painted, and/or making a puppet or special favor the children can keep.

    Welcome to New Zealand Storytelling
This Web Site is under the auspices of The New Zealand Guild of Storytellers - Nga Kaikorero Purakau O Aotearoa (Inc) "Words convey the mental treasures of one period to the generations that follow; and laden with this, their precious freight, they sail safely across gulfs of time in which empires have suffered shipwreck and the languages of common life have sunk into oblivion." Anon
Storytelling: an ancient art Storytelling has been around as long as there have been people. Our storytellers have been priests and mystics, wise people and sages, and they have been Mum and Dad. In truth, each of us is a storyteller, whether our favourite subject is the "one that got away" or the latest escapades of our children. Stories are as natural to us as breathing and dreaming. Storytelling is a tool for modern times. In this age of high tech, many of us long for a return to simpler times. The ancient art of Storytelling is being recognised as the perfect tool for humanising the workplace, increasing the creativity of our learning environments, and as a teaching tool to create stronger communities. Stories invite us to create and pass down our culture from generation to generation, to share our values, to question our assumptions, and to see our individual and collective futures.
