The 53rd Weather Recon Squadron based at Keesler AFB on the Mississippi coast works with the National Hurricane Center in tracking and providing information concerning developing tropical events in the Atlantic basin. You may join this group of aviators as they are briefed for their mission into Hurricane Opal. They will be flying their WC-130 aircraft at 10,000 ft. Upon completing the brief and flight with the hurricane hunters, close out the window and return to this page to continue your tasking. The briefing the pilots of the 53rd Weather Recon Squadron received at Keesler AFB, requires them to fly their plane into the eye of Hurricane Opal at 10,000 feet. The position of the storm is expected to be at 23 degrees North and 92 degrees West , headed in a North-Eastern direction by the time the WC-130 ( fact sheet ) makes its first run into the hurricane's eye.

62. Tracking A Hurricane
graph paper, graphing calculator, hurricane tracking charts, storm coordinate data charts, list of weather and hurricane URLs. BACKGROUND information
http://math.rice.edu/~jrenza/Lessons/hurricane.html
TRACKING A HURRICANE LESSON TITLE: Tracking a Hurricane
COURSE/GRADE LEVEL: Precalculus/Trigonometry
MATH TOPICS USED: Plotting Rectangular and Polar Coordinates
PURPOSE: to integrate the use of the Internet into instruction of Precalculus topics
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
pencils,
rectangular and polar coordinate graph paper,
graphing calculator,
hurricane tracking charts,
storm coordinate data charts,
list of weather and hurricane URLs
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The students should be familiar with the trigonometric conversion formulas from rectangular to polar form and back again. They should also have rectangular coordinate and polar coordinate graph paper, and be familiar with the definitions of latitude and longitude. LESSON PROCEDURE: Distribute storm coordinate data charts, hurricane tracking charts, and graph paper (if necessary). Hurricane Coordinates The students will plot the hurricane coordinates given in the data chart on their rectangular coordinate graphing paper. The students will convert one set of the coordinates from the hurricane data chart into polar coordinate form, and plot this on their polar coordinate graph paper. This reference point will act as "the eye" of the hurricane on your graph map. We will use these coordinates to calculate the wind velocities at various distances away from the eye, given the wind velocity nearest the eye.

Weather
Weather is a primary factor which drives the emergency response activities of the Southern Area Coordination Center. Emergency response teams in the Southern Area are involved in wildfire suppression activities, hurricane recovery efforts, and flood and tornado recovery efforts. Accurate and timely weather information is critical to our mission and the mission of our partners and cooperators. This page has links to a variety of weather related web sites which provide information useful in understanding potential threats and corresponding emergency response needs. FIRE WEATHER Dry conditions can combine with lightning or human actions to ignite wildfires. Weather conditions such as humidity, precipitation, wind and temperature are used to predict fire behavior and determine staffing and equipment needs in order to prevent wildfires from spreading as well as contain them. Much of the weather information used is gathered routinely from the National Weather Service and remote weather stations located throughout the area. The National Weather Service issues fire weather reports including Red Flag Warnings indicating dangerous conditions favoring wildfire growth and erratic behavior. Other information about fire behavior and severity come from a variety of models. The Haines Index was developed specifically for wildfires whereas the the Keech Byrum Drought Index and the Palmer Drought Index, were both adapted for fire. All models provide firefighters information to help predict potential fire severity across the United States.

Floods and Flash Floods Are the Deadliest Severe Weather Event
Flash floods occur within a few minutes or hours of excessive rainfall, a dam or levee failure, or a sudden release of water held by an ice jam. Rapidly rising water can reach heights of 30 feet or more. Most flash floods are caused by slow-moving thunderstorms, or multiple thunderstorms which move over the same area one right after the other. Details...
