Stock Market Simulator January 22- March 1 We will begin looking at how individuals participate in trading stock. This is a game that attempts to expose you to the vocabulary, issues, and dynamics of the stock market. It is also designed to teach you how the sterile concepts discussed in class have significant applications in the "real world". This activity will last for six weeks. Most of the work will be done outside of class. You have three "pieces" to submit on Friday, March 1 : a group portfolio, a group paper, and a brief presentation. By following the directions listed below, asking questions, and remaining actively involved, you will do very well on this task. Remember, this is worth 10% of your final semester grade! Good luck! http://stocksquest.thinkquest.org/10326/market_simulation/educator.html Use the following website to get started: Guidelines Daily Activities These activities will take place before or after school, some class time will be allotted each week ( you will not have time every day shares and selling shares previously owned. (This means that if just one of you trades, you are satisfying this requirement)

A stock market is a market for the trading of publicly held company stocks or shares and associated financial instruments (including stock options, convertibles and stock index futures). Traditionally such markets were open-outcry where trading occurred on the floor of an exchange. These days increasingly the markets are cyber-markets with buying and selling occurring via online real-time matching of orders placed by buyers and sellers. Many years ago, worldwide, buyers and sellers were individuals investors and businessmen. These days markets have generally become "institutionalized", that is buyers and sellers are largely institutions whether pension funds, insurance companies, mutual funds or banks. This rise of the institutional investor has brought growing professionalism to all aspects of the markets.

Personal-finance Web sites for kids that teach everything from budgeting to managing a portfolio have become plentiful on the Net. Many are so easy to use that any parent or child with a modicum of computer literacy can take advantage of them. By using games, quizzes, and other interactive material, the best sites can hold the attention of a child who might not otherwise be willing to focus on financial topics. The Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, geared to youths, offers a good starting point (table). Check out its site to get an overview of how you can proceed with your child's financial education, whether she is 7 or 17. Lesson Plan: Play the Market 5-8 (middle school) economics, mathematics approximately four weeks Overview
To help get a better understanding of the volatile nature of the stock market, students will participate in a hypothetical experiment. For four weeks, students will track the ups and downs of 10 stocks they have selected. After this month, students will discuss their imaginary gains and losses and share their observations about the stock market, and their reactions to this experience.
Prep
Begin by having your students read the appropriate Web pages for Episode 5, Topic 6: Wall Street and the 1929 Crash.
Lead a class discussion. You may wish to ask questions such as:
  • When and why did the stock market get started? Whose idea was it?
  • Was the creation of the stock market intended to provide opportunities for all citizens? Did some segments of the population benefit more than others?
  • During the late 1920s, why did so many people invest their life savings in the stock market, even though they knew it was a risky venture?
  • What are some of the dangers of investing in the stock market? What are some of the possible benefits?

Info, Data, Stats and the News Band Aid Program
Think your school's band could use $10,000 in new instruments?
The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (producers of the annual Juno Awards Show) is looking for six deserving schools whose music programs are in jeopardy due to lack of funding. The Band Aid program invites such schools to make an application before September 30 of each year, setting out the present state of the music program, the qualifications of the teacher(s) and a statement of his or her drive and dedication. The school should also be able to demonstrate a history of fundraising for their band programs. The list of recipient schools is announced in early October. CARAS created the Music Education Program in 1997 through proceeds made by the sale of the 25th anniversary Juno Awards CD box set. Donations from individual artists, and the Canadian music recording industry have ensured the reach of the Band Aid program for several years. For more information, go to
