Executive Officer, Stepfamily Association of Victoria Inc.
This paper documents the experience of the Stepfamily Association of Vic in working with stepfamilies. It raises some questions which I trust you may find useful, whether your interest is in social policy, research, family practice, or if you are here because you are in a family. The main part of the paper explores issues relating to the lack of recognition and support many stepfamilies experience as part of everyday life. It argues that stepfamilies occupy an ambivalent position in society which is disempowering for them, and ignores the positive contribution they have to make in a changing society. The final part of the paper explores what the Stepfamily Association believes needs to happen for this picture to change. 1. Lack of recognition and support - an experience of ambivalence. When someone (with authority) describes the world and you are not in it, there is a moment of psychic disequilibrium, as if you looked into a mirror and saw nothing (Rich in Meemeduma, 1993:163)

Stepping Stones for Stepfamilies
by Charlotte Shoup Olsen
Abstract: Stepfamilies may appear to be like first time married two-parent families, but in reality, they are not. Their complexity becomes more apparent when one begins to recognize the number of close relationships that are possible. Stepping Stones for Stepfamilies, an Extension program developed by Kansas State University, is designed to assist, not only stepfamilies with children under the age of 18 years old, but professionals, extended family members, and friends who want to understand how to be supportive of successful stepfamily living within their communities. Different learning styles require different types of educational strategies; thus, the program consists of a six-lesson home study course, a 35-minute video, an audiotape, single page fact sheets, a teaching guide, a training manual, and evaluation instruments. These resources can be used in combination with each other or individually as the situation warrants. Relevance.

Introduction
Extension educators can broaden efforts to positively affect family's experiences and children's development by delivering programs on relevant and recent family life research to community professionals. This represents a "second tier" of family life education and fits within an ecological perspective on human development. This theoretical framework recognizes multi-level environmental influences on human development. Specifically, community professionals represent factors outside the family that can affect family functioning. "Understanding Stepfamilies: Information and Strategies" is a 4-hour research update seminar for professionals who work with children and families. Responses to the program indicate receptiveness to similar Extension programs targeting professionals.
Rationale for the Program on Stepfamilies
Rationale for developing a professional seminar on stepfamilies centers on the following.

That is until several months ago when her mother remarried. These days, Samantha seems to spend a lot of time in her bedroom, locked away from her mother stepfather and two new siblings. Samantha's reaction is unfortunately typical. Almost all children who become part of a stepfamily experience difficulty adapting to some degree. Yet, with care and persistence, natural and new parents can help lessen the trauma associated with the creation of a new family unit.

Family Rules : Helping Stepfamilies and Single Parents Build Happy Homes > Customer Review #1: Practical, realistic, and in the "Top Tier"!

As a new stepmother, Ive read close to 20 books on stepfamilies, countless books on marriage, and quite a number on parenting. (Can you tell Im a teacher?) This is one of my favorites, largely because it diverges from the standard "psychology and philosophy" to emphasize the nitty-gritty, practical daily realities of sharing life and household space with children, particularly children who arent biologically your own. Having taught 7th grade and become a pretty vocal fan of clear expectations and consequences, I found I agree with the vast majority of Ms. Lofas "rules". She has a desperately-needed perspective that benevolent adults are supposed to be in charge of the family, and offers countless practical steps to accomplish things such as: dinnertime rituals, chores, bathroom habits, bedtime customs, manners, adults bedroom privacy, showing gratitude, tone of voice in communication, not accepting excuses, etc.

STEPFAMILIES OF PITTSBURGH A Special Kind of Family An estimated 15 million children are living in stepfamilies. There is little guidance for these families, although they differ in crucial ways from the original nuclear families:
    • A parent-child bond exists prior to the relationship between the new couple. Children may feel threatened by the new relationship, and their behavior can create stress for the rest of the family. Children commonly experience loyalty conflicts between biological parent and stepparent. Stepparents may find themselves in a bind, caught between the need to establish authority and the desire to be accepted.
These are just a few of the complications that confront stepfamilies. All the members are called upon to readjust primary relationships. The realities are often different from the expectations. Stepfamilies of Pittsburgh is a self-help group for persons in a stepfamily relationship. We work together to explore the issues and themes that emerge in this increasingly common type of extended family. Through self-education and the exchange of ideas and experiences we believe that individuals can learn to deal with the realities and challenges of stepfamily life in a rewarding way.

    HAPPY STEPFAMILIES ARE POSSIBLE! HOW?
The stepfamily has become a common type of household in many parts of the world. Yet, stepfamilies have unique problems. The most challenging is undoubtedly child rearing. However, as the two articles that follow will try to show, it is possible to rear children successfully in a stepfamily environment. TRADITIONALLY, STEPFATHERS AND STEPMOTHERS HAVE HAD A BAD PRESS. WHEN WE WERE children, many of us heard some version of the fairy tale of Cinderella, who suffered so much at the hands of her cruel stepmother. Children in Europe learn, too, the fairy tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Snow White's stepmother turns out to be a wicked witch! Do such fairy tales give an accurate view of stepfamilies? Are all stepparents really so bad? No. Most of them want only what is best for the children they inherit by marriage. But they do have to face some difficult problems inherent in stepfamily life. "You are not really

    Successful Stepfamilies
How to create a happy, functional stepfamily.
    By Jeffrey Cottrill
Perhaps you're getting married to someone with children from a previous relationship, or else you have children and are getting remarried. Are you (or your new partner) ready for an instant stepfamily? To make it work, you need to let go of any preconceived notions you may have about the situation and make room for adjustment and compromise. It's not uncommon for at least one of the spouses to have children from a previous marriage, and this can create awkwardness and even upset. Children are often the most affected by a divorce. It's traumatic enough to see their parents break up, but how do they feel about you (or your new partner) suddenly appearing in their lives as a "replacement"? If you're marrying somebody with kids, it's vital that you understand that the children are a major factor in his or her life which makes them one in yours, too. Similarly, if you're a parent marrying a non-parent, keep in mind that your partner is jumping straight from having no children to being a stepmom or stepdad an awkward transition at best. And if both of you are parents, you need to find a way to "blend" your respective families.
