Ten Key Tips for Stepfamilies
1. Recognize that stepfamilies are different from traditional families. A blended family functions much differently than a traditional one. It's almost as if the stepfamily is moving in reverse: First comes the marriage license and then, typically after five to seven years, the sense of unity the license represented when the vows were taken. In traditional families, parents bond with their children as each is born and raise them to reflect their values. In stepfamilies, people who once were strangers move in together. Without benefit of this natural bonding, it's much harder to tolerate the irritating behaviors and differing values we all display. Those of us in stepfamilies actually must work at spending time together to foster the sense of appreciation and commitment that grows naturally in families who have been together from the very beginning. Children in blended families represent a tangible link to an era that predated the stepfamily. The new family has ties to people who aren't even part of the household ex-spouses, former in-laws, the children's half-siblings or stepsiblings in another home. These people are relatives of the children and remain important to them. Their existence, along with any continuing commitments to an earlier family, can raise stresses that traditional families never face.

    A. Metzen and E. Metzen If you want to print this publication, we recommend downloading the PDF version. Money may not be everything... BUT...money is a factor in most matters that are important to life. Money affects where you live, how you live, what benefits you can give your children, what you buy, what your household activities include, how you spend your leisure time, and just about everything else. All families must make a multitude of decisions about ways money will be earned, spent, or saved. All families start out with, and continue to face, money issues that require management and control decisions of utmost importance of their well-being. Money matters are of particular importance for remarried couples; they are considered second only to children in terms of major problem areas that stepfamilies face. Stepfamilies often find themselves starting out with previous resources having been depleted as a result of earlier divorce, and their current (and future) resources strained as they build new relationships while also retaining ties to past ones.

Clark, Program Leader and Associate State Specialist, Human Development and Family Studies This guide has been revised and updated from GH3507, originally written by Marilyn Coleman and Larry Ganong, Human Development and Family Studies. Money, frequently cited as the biggest source of stress in family life, is often an even more challenging matter for members of stepfamilies. About 50 percent of Americans will live in a stepfamily at some point in their lives, making money management in stepfamilies an important issue for many people. This guide will describe several reasons why stepfamily members often have very different views related to the use of money. It will also discuss some ways by which stepfamilies can manage their financial affairs successfully.
    Financial circumstances unique to stepfamilies
Although all families face a variety of financial tasks, such as preparing a budget, dealing with unforeseen expenses, and planning for the future, financial matters are often more complex in stepfamilies. Why is this so? This section will highlight some common characteristics of stepfamilies that can make financial decision making more complicated than in first-married families.
    Different financial perspectives and experiences
Husbands and wives often have differing attitudes and beliefs about family finances. In a remarriage, however, each partner contributes not only his or her own beliefs about money to the new relationship, but also past financial experiences and established habits of spending and saving money. It can be a major challenge for remarried spouses to merge their ideas into a system that is acceptable to both partners. If partners insist upon retaining the methods of handling money and making financial decisions that they used in other relationships, they may experience friction with their new spouses. Tension is especially likely if financial problems were a contributing factor in a previous divorce.

There is no honeymoon period. The first two years are the period of greatest challenge. There is a continuum of complexity and challenge in stepfamily situations. Among the less complex and less challenging and disruptive stepfamily situations is one where the man is the non-custodial parent of the only stepchildren, so they are present only at certain holiday, vacation and other designated periods. Among the more complex, more challenging situations are those with children - especially adolescent children - from multiple previous relationships.
