When your student watches the news do they know (and understand) where it is happening? Proximity is important—understanding geography helps to explain why Zimbabwe is not much like Moscow, but shares characteristics with Egypt. It is important to understand things and places which are close, and those which are far apart. The horror and sorrow of September 11, 2001 will be with us for a long time. Almost all news now is international news. Our children and students need to know what is happening in their country and their world. The first part of knowing our world, and understanding what will happen now, is to know where places are. It is easy to fail to recognize the humanity of other peoples when we do not even know where they live. American men and women are now fighting far from home; we owe it to them to at least know where they are. Maps are vital to our understanding geography and the world we live in. They can be beautiful and fascinating, but if they are completely unfamiliar it can be difficult to learn from them.

114. Travel To Teach - Providing Affordable Volunteering Opportunities To Teach Engli
Provides teaching volunteering opporunities in Thailand.
http://www.travel-to-teach.org
What is Travel-to-Teach?
Travel to Teach is a non-profit organisation, which provides affordable volunteering opportunities to teach English whilst travelling abroad.
Travel to Teach's mission is to:
Provide valuable working opportunities for our volunteers.
Ensure genuine travelling experiences of different cultures at a cost that most travelers can afford.
Teach English and Computer skills to the poorer parts of the world where too little education is provided.
Travel to Teach prioritises but does not work exclusively with women and young people on the recipient side. It is generally accepted that aid given to women is more likely to sustain local communities. Moreover, women in most developing countries are in a very vulnerable position that can be strengthened by training. How is Travel to Teach funded?
Travel to Teach has no external funding; our participating volunteers pay for their stay and help support the programs we run with their fees. We are religiously, politically and in every other aspect completely independent.
Travel to Teach offers is something between tourism, backpacking and volunteer-work. The benefits from volunteering with Travel to Teach are:

There are suggestions on how to get children interested in print, how to develop the sound awareness necessary to learn to read, how to learn the letters of the alphabet, how to make simple books for beginning reading, and how to use writing to develop letter sound correspondence as well as to learn beginning sight words. There are prompts to use when children get stuck on a word or make an error. Suggestions for informal learning are included and also a sample lesson plan for structured lessons. Resources for finding easy books for beginning readers are also recommended. Parents will find the book easy to read and understand. MORE ON THE BOOK AND ITS CONTENTS

Humorous article describes how drink mixing can be used as an analogy for Boolean search construction when teaching students.
http://web.uflib.ufl.edu/instruct/LIRT/1995/jgin.html
"Rember the Gin and Tonic!" : Using Alcohol to Teach Boolean Searching
Michael Lorenzen Zanesville Campus Library, Ohio University The Zanesville Campus Library teaches a wide variety of patrons in a formal BI setting. The library is a shared facility on a co-located campus serving Ohio University at Zanesville and the Muskingum Area Technical College. BI is done for courses from both institutions which results in a large number of students from different programs and age groups. One of the least interesting things to learn about, from a patron perspective, is boolean searchingyet this is one of the most important concepts that a patron will be exposed to in library instruction. We noticed that repeatedly, regardless of type of patron or time of year, students would get glazed eyes and either sleep or play with their pencils during boolean searching explanations. Neat and colorful ven diagrams and LCD projections of CD programs had little impact on the problem. So the library decided to change the way in which boolean searching was taught. A common interest of most of our students is alcohol, so this substance was incorporated into the BI instruction. Empty gin and whiskey bottles were acquired and filled with plain or colored water. A bottle of tonic water and several glasses were also brought in.

Using Historic Places to Teach
Teaching with Historic Places in a Virginia classroom.
How to Use the Lesson Plans
Descriptions of the Lesson Plans Teaching with Historic Places bibliography
Historic places have powerful and provocative stories to tell. As witnesses to the past, they recall real events that shaped history and actual people who faced those situations and issues. Places make connections across time that give them a special ability to create an empathetic understanding of what happened and why. As historian David McCullough explains, experiencing places "helps in making contact with those who were there before in other days. It's a way to find them as fellow human beings, as necessary as the digging you do in libraries." ( Brave Companions , New York: Prentice Hall Press, 1992, p. x.) It is not necessary, though, to visit a place to feel its connections and to learn its history. Through a variety of materials and activities, the Teaching with Historic Places program (TwHP) enables teachers and students to learn from places without leaving the classroom. Students can develop their own interpretation of places by examining and questioning readings, documents, maps, photographs, and by engaging in activities that help them connect these locations to the broad themes of American history. Whether visited in real life or on a "classroom field trip" provided by a lesson plan, places add substance to the themes and events covered in textbooks. Why, for example, did children and world leaders alike flock to the doors of the modest cottage Eleanor Roosevelt chose to live in after her husband Franklin's death? TwHP lesson plans in this kit provide documents, questions, and activities that engage students in actively pursuing answers to questions like these.
