Education
It's no wonder that as we mature we think about the teachers who have inspired us to reason, to question, and to create. Good teachers are as varied as the methods they use, but they have common characteristics. They are caring individuals, they want to make a difference in the lives of others, and they never stop learning themselves.
PHOTO: Anne Reeves '94 teaching at Morningside Elementary School
Meeting Licensure Requirements Because no college or university in Virginia offers a major in education, students seeking teacher licensure major in a liberal arts or sciences discipline and also take a sequence of education courses. When you graduate from Hollins, you'll be prepared to meet licensure requirements in Virginia and most other states. Hollins began the first graduate program in the Roanoke Valley to allow college graduates in the liberal arts to earn teaching licensure and a master of arts in teaching at the same time.
Students may seek endorsements in elementary education (prek-6), middle education (6-8), or in the following areas in secondary educ ation: art (prek-12), biology (6-12), chemistry (6-12), computer science (6-12), English (6-12), French (prek-12), German (prek-12), Spanish (prek-12), Latin (prek-12), history and social sciences (6-12), mathematics (6-12), choral music (prek-12), and physics (6-12).
The Hollins Program Education courses emphasize content knowledge, principles of teaching and learning, and specific skills. Not only will you learn more about art, history, math, science, and other disciplines yourself, but you'll also learn how to present these subjects to children in ways that encourage their interest in learning.

Course offerings, major requirements, faculty listings, internship, and study abroad information.
    http://www.hollins.edu/undergrad/classical/classics.htm
    Undergraduate Programs
    Classical Studies
Classical studies is not just ancient history - its language, drama, poetry, women's studies, comedy, science, philosophy, art, architecture, oratory, politics, and religion. Classical studies intersects with 90 percent of the academic disciplines in a modern liberal arts program, and because of that, can stand alone as a dynamic and challenging field of study, or can complement almost any other major providing a solid historical background. A Spanish student can examine the roots of many Indo-European languages in the study of Latin; a philosophy student can discover deeper meanings in Plato or Aristotle through Ancient Greek; an art history student can trace many of the forms of western architecture from their beginnings in Archaic Greece. The curriculum of the Hollins University classics department encourages these interconnections.
    Greece and Rome
Studies in classics at Hollins concentrate on Greece and Rome, the source of western linguistic, cultural, and civic heritage. You may concentrate in either ancient studies or classical languages, or you may minor in Latin and Greek.
    Learning Opportunities
Courses are taught in the manner of seminars instead of lectures. Students learn to recite poetry in language classes, give presentations in advanced literature and art classes, participate in field trips to museums, perform scenes from tragedies and comedies in theatre courses. Short Term courses take students abroad to important museums and sites in Greece and Italy. Independent studies and internships allow an experiential approach to learning and valuable hands-on participation in jobs where a classical studies background is an asset.

      Philosophy Department
The Philosophy Department at the University of Vermont is committed to pursuing philosophical scholarship while offering our students the highest quality undergraduate instruction. Our faculty are expected not only to be knowledgeable, but to be active contributors to their fields. The Philosophical Gourmet Report says: "Among schools that do not offer the PhD or MA in philosophy, those with the best philosophy faculties would probably include: Amherst College, California Institute of Technology, Dartmouth College, Reed College, University of Vermont, and Wellesley College." See the website at: http://www.gourmetreport.com/undergrad.htm . Research interests of our faculty include: Ancient, Medieval and Modern Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, Epistemology, Ethics, Political Philosophy, Metaphysics, Chinese Philosophy, Philosophical Psychology, Feminism, History of U.S. Philosophy, Philosophy of Mind, Free Will and Determinism, and Philosophy of Science. All of our faculty teach students at both introductory and advanced levels, and all of our courses are taught by full-time facultywe do not use any teaching assistants or part-time lecturers. We believe that students learn best when interacting directly with professors who are engaged in making philosophical progress. The Department offers a wide range of courses, covering both historical and contemporary approaches to the discipline. In addition to offering our regularly scheduled courses, the Department encourages independent work with faculty members.

    Fire works
Last year, 17 persons were treated in the hospital emergency rooms for injuries resulting from the use of fireworks. Once again we are entering the fireworks season and I would like to acquaint you with New Jersey's Fireworks Laws. New Jersey's laws on fireworks, N.J.S.A. 21:2-1 et seq., and N.J.S.A. 21:3-1 et seq are very restrictive. In some states, fireworks are permitted to be sold to, and used by, the public. However, in New Jersey, only paper or plastic caps for use in toy guns are legal. The fire works law are jointly enforced by municipalities and The New Jersey Department of labor. The law states that the sale or possessing of fireworks with intent to sell, is a crime of the fourth degree. Any person found guilty of possessing fireworks, including sparklers, with the intention of selling them, can be fined up to $7500.00 and/or imprisoned up to 18 months. Any person found using fireworks illegally can be fined up to $500.00 and/or imprisoned for up to 30 days. web site.
On behalf of the men and women of the Lynn Police Department
I would like to welcome you to our web-site. I hope you find it informative and easy to navigate. To learn more about any topic simply double-click any of the “boxes” running down the left side of this page. Topics are listed alphabetically. If you haven’t visited our site for a while you may want to start with “WEB UPDATES.”
One of the things we hope to accomplish with this site is to provide the public with a better idea of just “who we are” and “what we do”. We also hope to use our site to actively involve members of our community in our community policing and crime reduction mission.
For example, under “Criminal Investigations” you will find information about all our investigative units such as our Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Unit, Special Investigations Unit, Gang Unit, Juvenile Unit and Drug Task Force. Under “Patrol Division” you will find information about our uniformed officers and patrol routes.
Our site also includes a “Most Wanted” section that includes photos and outstanding charges for the Lynn Police Department’s Ten Most Wanted. There are also links to Most Wanted photos for state and federal law enforcement agencies. With the cooperation of the public, several of these individuals have been captured in the past year.
