Prep Sessions -Seniors Every year, we are asked about prep classes for the PSAT and SAT. This year, we are coordinating with Girls Preparatory School to provide a wide range of options for your sons. Two different national test prep companies will offer their courses on our campuses. These options will provide courses taught on a variety of days and at a variety of times and at a variety of prices that should allow each student who is interested to take advantage of a test prep program. This letter will give you some information about test dates, times, locations and prices. Please read it carefully. It may be helpful to print a copy and keep it in a convenient location so that you can refer to it throughout the year. I am often asked to recommend a particular class for an individual student. McCallie does not endorse any particular test prep class. We believe that the best preparation for standardized tests is a solid academic background in a core curriculum with emphasis on reading, writing and problem solving. However, we recognize and appreciate the desire of some students to put extra time and energy into preparing for these tests. Therefore, the right class for your son will be the one which you can comfortably afford and which your son will make a commitment to attend. In addition to the limits of test theory and the constraints associated with a given test, the test administrator is faced with several potential sources of error arising from the differences among the two cultures. These include lack of compatibility of the languages, differences in the experiential backgrounds of the students being tested from those for whom the test was developed, and differences in affective dispositions toward handling testing environments between the groups of students. The testing of many American Indian children using exams developed for the majority American society represents a case of cross-cultural testing which is likely to produce invalid results in the form of underestimation of student performance. This digest discusses limitations of the use of standardized tests with many American Indian students and delineates sources and consequences of invalid test results ensuing from the administration of standardized tests to unacculturated American Indian students.

Connecticut Mastery Test With the new federal education laws, standardized testing has become an increasingly important issue. The Connecticut Mastery Test, commonly known as the CMT, is the test used to monitor student and district progress in Connecticut. Because your student's scores on the CMT effect placement and possibly promotion, it is important that all students do their best. We need to work together to insure the best results. The school system provides instruction and review for the test. Parents can help by making sure their students get a good night's sleep, eat a nutritious breakfast, and come with a good attitude. Please note that if you are planning to register online, as the deadline approaches the response time can be lengthy or even prohibitive. While 'walk-ins' are possible on test day if the site is not full, popular test days are increasingly filling up.

The SAT I is an apptitude and reasoning test that is used by most colleges for admission purposes and is usually taken more than once. The SAT II are tests given in subject areas (Math, English, History, etc) and are used by many, but not all schools. Research schools of interest to determine whether SAT IIs are recommended. The SAT I is usually taken more than once. Up to three SAT II tests may be taken at one time.

Sophomores are required to take the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) in May. Juniors and seniors who have not passed all four parts (Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Interdisciplinary) previously, are encouraged to re-take the part(s) they have not passed. See your guidance counselor for details.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) TESTS
The Guidance Department conducts the Advanced Placement tests in May. The score on the test allows a student to earn college credits. Over 90% of the colleges grant college credit based on the AP test results. Check with the college as to appropriate test grade standards at their institution.
COLLEGE BOARD TESTING
- SAT s Juniors who plan to attend a college that requires the Scholastic Assessment Test I (SAT I) should plan to take this test inn June. You may retake the test at the beginning of your senior year. Some colleges require students to take SAT II Subject Tests. These subject area tests are usually given in November or December of the senior year, but may be taken earlier. If you plan to apply "Early Decision" to a college, you should take the tests during the junior year. Be sure to check with your counselor if you are uncertain about which tests you should take or when to take them.

The GRE Program also assists students in their transition to graduate education through a variety of services and publications. Admissions tests offered include the GRE General Test, which measures verbal, quantitative, and analytical reasoning skills, and the GRE Subject Tests, which measure achievement in 14 different fields of study. Understanding the SAT I, SAT II, ACT, PLAN and EXPLORE tests
By Mary Ann Newbill Because all high schools have different standards of performance and their own unique grading scale, most colleges use standardized tests the SAT I and the ACT to compare students in the same specific areas of knowledge and on the same skills. Standardized test results are one of a number of factors considered by most colleges in the admissions process. For large public universities that process thousands of undergraduate applications, test scores and high school grades often enter into a formula that automatically accepts, rejects or defers a student's application. Only students in the "deferred" category are reviewed by an admission professional. For the majority of students, there's no need to take both tests. In 2000, The University of California at Berkeley, for example, used a formula with grades and test scores only, which would make how a student performs on those tests more important than at Bates College, in Maine, where test scores are optional. Determining which test to take is an important step in knowing how to prepare best for the standardized test piece of the college application. Most students will have natural abilities in either math or verbal arenas; some students will excel in both. Some students perform very well on tests in general; others don't.

The Standards and Assessment Program supports districts and school sites by providing a conceptual understanding of the API and effective ways to inform their constituents. Assessment
Information regarding all of California's standardized testing programs is coordinated and provided by the Standards and Assessment Office. Tests include the STAR Program Stanford9, Stanford9 Augmentation, Primary Language SABE/2, English Language Development, High School Exit Exam, Golden State Exam, Assessments in Career Education and Physical Fitness Exam. PROGRAM OF STUDIES ALBEMARLE COUNTY COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOLS General Information
Background

The Program of Studies outlines established standards for Albemarle County's comprehensive high schools in these areas:
graduation requirements grading scale and promotion course levels, grade point average, and rank in class attendance and exam policies athletic eligibility
The Program of Studies identifies core academic courses and core elective courses to insure that all County students have access to comparable courses sufficient to meet the graduation requirements. Each high school offers supplemental elective courses based on student interest or need in addition to the core electives. Differences in the supplemental electives do not constitute grounds for waiver of the school division's attendance zones.
Contents
The Program of Studies contains general information and brief course descriptions for subjects offered in grades 9-12 in Albemarle County high schools. It is designed for use by persons who wish information concerning courses, graduation requirements, and other general information about secondary offerings. This information is a starting point for examining courses offered and making decisions leading to an educational plan.
Guidance counselors are always available to help students plan their courses of studies at the secondary level . Students who have questions or need help in developing the course of studies should contact the Guidance Office.

Non-Standard Test Administration

Our goal at Georgetown Day School is always to support the individual learning needs of our students while also maintaining our academic standards. In the past few years, an increased number of students have been referred for psycho-educational, neuro-psychoeducational, and/or ADHD evaluations for the purpose of diagnosing a learning disability, ADHD or other issues that may have an impact on learning. At the High School , many of these students are seeking accommodations for standardized testing testing (e.g. PSAT, SAT, AP, ACT). The documentation must meet specific criteria in order for students to receive accommodations on standardized tests. Due to the variability of the reports, GDS is providing you with guidelines set forth by College Board and ACT. In order for a student to receive accommodations on the PSAT, SAT and AP exams, GDS must complete an eligibility form describing the recommended accommodations and confirm that the documentation meets the guidelines set forth by The College Board. If the documentation does not meet the criteria, the student may utilize the appeals process and submit the complete report for approval by The College Board. In order for a student to receive accommodations on the ACT, GDS is required to submit the complete diagnostic report to ACT, along with an eligibility form supporting the need for the accommodation(s). The determination of a student's eligibility to receive accommodations is made by ACT.
