STANDARDIZED TESTING AT DARIEN HIGH SCHOOL THE DARIEN HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT Darien High School students participate in three arenas of standardized testing as they move from the Freshman through the Senior year; The Comprehensive Testing Program III (CTP III) published by the Educational Records Bureau, the state-mandated Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) the College Board Testing Program, consisting of three tests that are optional for students, but one or more are most likely taken if the student is college-bound. These are; the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test (PSAT) the Scholastic Assessment Test I (Reasoning Tests and the Scholastic Assessment Tests II (Subject Tests) Additionally, students who are enrolled in one or more Advanced Placement Courses may elect to take one or more of the Advanced Placement Tests (AP) Each of these tests are described in some detail below. Back to Top STANDARDIZED TESTING ABOUT THE P.S.A.T The Preliminary Student Assessment Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT-NMSQT) is given in the 10th grade for practice and then is used as a qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship program in the 11th grade. The PSAT is a two-hour version of the SAT I and measures verbal, writing, and mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities. All 10th and 11th grade students are registered by Lovett to take the exam. ABOUT THE SAT I The Student Assessment Test I (SAT I) is a three-hour multiple-choice test that measures the verbal and mathematical reasoning abilities you have developed over many years, both in and out of school. Your SAT I scores, grades, course selection, and other information about your academic background help college admissions officers evaluate how well prepared you are to do college-level work. Most colleges now affirm that they see the strength of your transcript (i.e., how challenging the courses you've chosen to take) and your grade point average as far better predictors of college performance than standardized test scores. Since courses and grading standards vary widely from high school to high school, however, scores on standardized tests, such as SAT I and the ACT, help colleges compare the ability of students from different schools.

Introduction
School Counselors work with all students, school staff, administrators, parents, and the community as a function of their total guidance program. Guidance and counseling programs promote school success through a focus on academic achievement, prevention and intervention activities, advocacy, social/emotional, and career development. (American School Counselor Association, 1997.)
The Revised Guidance and Counseling Curriculum provides a framework for standards as to what a quality school counseling program should contain, as well as serving as an organizational guide for developing appropriate competencies for student success. The curriculum provides the standards as the acknowledged criteria used to make judgments about the adequacy and structure of the program, and a sufficient number of program standards should be written to represent a good guidance model.

Grade 7 The Stanford Achievement Test is a norm-referenced achievement test. Standardized tests have a disproportionate impact on students, teachers and curriculum in schools that serve low income and minority students (Mitchell 1992; Tate 1993). Some widely found effects that are of particular consequence for equity in education are reviewed briefly below.
Testing and Ability Grouping
A substantial share of U.S. schools engage in ability grouping or tracking of students beginning at the elementary and middle grade levels according to presumed ability levels. As a number of studies have shown, tracking almost always means that those pupils who need the most support to raise their performance levels get the least, while those who need it the least have it showered on them. The consequence is a two tiered system of education characterized by the following conditions.

Guidance Department Welcome to the McQuaid Guidance Department. In partnership with parents and teachers, we are here to serve the academic and personal needs of McQuaid students. ... Windy Gap 2003 Upper School Guidance Charlotte Christian provides a comprehensive college counseling program for Upper School students. Students and parents are encouraged to work closely with the Director of College Counseling in college selection and the admission process.
Additional Guidance Office links: Guidance Program Overview The program begins by helping 9th grade students make a successful transition to the academic life of Upper School. Students receive classroom instruction on time management, study skills and note-taking strategies. Each student then has individual follow-up appointments to discuss personal areas for improvement and complete a four-year academic plan.
Students in 10th grade receive guidance in choosing the direction of their careers. Students complete a brief career interest inventory and the Myers Briggs Type Indicator to help them better understand themselves, particularly in relation to their career interests. Students also complete a guided journal that teaches them to seek God’s will when making major life decisions such as their choice in careers.
Students in 11th grade have two primary tasks: to begin visiting colleges and to complete their standardized testing by taking the SAT and the ACT. GENERAL ACADEMIC GUIDANCE AND POLICIES Back to Course Registration Booklet Back to High School Minimum Course Load Students must normally take a minimum of 6 classes each semester, except for seniors taking three honors courses in which case the minimum is 5 classes each semester. These classes do not include counselor aide, independent study or audit. The recommended maximum course load is seven (7) classes. The school reserves the right to limit a student’s course load when appropriate. All students, except those taking three honors courses or those with special and compelling needs, must take at least four academic subjects per semester (i.e. those in English, social studies, math, science, and modern languages). Any deviation from these requirements must be approved by the counselor and principal. Students selecting an overload of more than 5 academic courses must have the approval of their teachers and counselor. Please direct questions concerning enrollment in specific courses to the appropriate counselor. Advanced Placement Courses ASIJ offers Advanced Placement Courses to students who demonstrate the ability and desire to work, especially during their junior and senior years, at a level comparable to the first year of college in a given subject. At the completion of the AP course, the students are encouraged to take the Advanced Placement Exam in order to receive college credit in addition to earning credit toward graduation.
