  • RESEARCH HOME EDUCATION:
Before you withdraw your child from a traditional school, learn all you can. Talk to other home educators, read books about home education, learn about home school law in Indiana, "comparison shop" for a curriculum for your school. WITHDRAW YOUR CHILD AND NOTIFY HIS OR HER CURRENT PRINCIPAL, IN WRITING, OF YOUR DECISION
While the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) issues school numbers to all private schools after they report their grade level enrollment data (often inaccurately referred to as "registration") as required by Indiana law, You do not need a home school number prior to withdrawing your child and beginning home instruction. However, you do need to let the public school know why your child is no longer in attendance or he or she may be considered truant.

Exams not broad enough?
Assessing students not easy with one-size-fits-all tests, some educators say
This is the second of two articles looking at the New York State Regents exams.
By STEPHEN BARTLETT, Staff Writer
PLATTSBURGH — New York state has administered Regents exams in high schools since the 1800s. "That’s a long history," said Peru Central School Superintendent A. Paul Scott. "Without them, we wouldn’t have the foundation we have today." But he feels schools need a broader set of options to assess students and programs. This year’s seniors are the first who must pass five Regents exams to graduate, and in two years the required passing score increases from 55 to 65. That has some educators, locally and statewide, sounding the alarm. A local grassroots organization — Higher Potential for Education, or HOPE — opposes standardized tests such as Regents exams as the sole assessment of student progress. The educators, parents and community members who make up the group say such tests restrict classroom creativity, place undo stress on students and ignore the various areas that children excel in.

Nontraditional education encompasses educational experiences that take place outside of the traditional classroom. The nontraditional education programs sponsored by DANTES are an integral part of the voluntary educational program of the uniformed services. DANTES fosters the philosophy of partnership between the civilian and military communities. Thus, all DANTES-sponsored programs are nationally recognized and available through the civilian educational community. DANTES effects agreements with testing agencies, colleges and universities, and educational associations to provide programs that offer the military student the same educational opportunities available to civilian students. The Education Office in Phoenix administers the DANTES programs for the National Guard. DANTES programs are also available at most in military installations, where Military Services’ educational personnel administer the programs.
Examination Programs: DANTES sponsors a wide range of examination programs to assist the service members in achieving their educational goals. Examinations are administered on more than 600 military installations by the DANTES Test Control Officer, who is normally the Educational Services Officer or Navy Campus Advisor for the military installation. About 300,000 DANTES-sponsored examinations are administered each year to military personnel. The DANTES Examinations Programs brochure contains a complete listing of all available examinations. Policies and procedures for administering the examinations are published in the DANTES Examination Program Handbook.

All applicants must complete a registration form which is obtained from the Ridge Technical Center Guidance Department. Most of the training programs at Ridge have minimum admission or state licensure requirements. Applicants should be a least 16 years of age and have the basic skills necessary for potential success in the training program they have chosen. If applicants do not possess the basic skills needed, remediation is available to assist students in improving basic skills when necessary. A student's sincere desire to learn, along with ability, will determine the extent of success.
Ridge Technical Center is open to all persons 16 years of age or older who are interested in vocational/technical education as preparation for employment and have the ability to benefit from the program selected. Minimum state standards must be met before completing with a vocational/technical Certificate of Completion. Admission testing is accomplished by completing the Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE). All students taking the TABE must have a valid photo ID and adults have a $15 testing fee. Qualified students applying for admission are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS Advanced Placement An AP course is a full-year, college-level learning experience that culminates in taking the College Board AP exam in May. Over 90 percent of colleges and universities give college credit or advanced placement to students whose AP grades are considered applicable. AP courses are challenging and stimulating, and compared to regular high school courses, they take more time, energy, independence, and commitment and have greater depth and scope. It is recommended that students enrolled in an AP course take the AP exam. They are 1 1/2 to 3 hours long. These exams contain both multiple-choice questions and free response questions that require essay writing and problem solving. Presently, Leavitt Area High School's Advanced Placement program offers AP Junior and Senior English, AP American History, AP Calculus, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and AP Computer Science. Prerequisites for these AP courses are listed in this Program of Studies under the description and course titles. Articulated Courses Leavitt Area High School and Central Maine Technical College are currently working to provide students, who will continue at CMTC, an opportunity not to duplicate courses already taken at LAHS.

Sunday, April 11, 2004 Critics give GED plan 'F' New policy makes getting certificate easier
By Karen Gutierrez
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Getting a GED instead of a diploma is about to become easier for high-school students in Kentucky. And that has some critics worried that more young people will drop out. "There's going to be tremendous pressure placed on schools to push kids into this thing," says Richard Innes, a researcher for the Bluegrass Institute, which is a statewide education watchdog group. The GED, or General Educational Development certificate, is like an alternative diploma for high-school dropouts. Currently in Kentucky, students who leave high school must wait a year before they can enroll in GED programs, which are run by adult education centers. They must seek out the programs on their own, which can be difficult. "It was basically a fluke that I managed to find it," said Vicky Dixon, 41, an Erlanger resident studying for her GED at Boone County's Adult Education Center, 99 Center St. in Florence. For teenagers, at least, the process is about to get easier under a new policy approved last week by the Kentucky Board of Education.
