Tribune Archives 2001 Close window High school dropout rates on the rise, despite state figures By Theresa Kilen Staff Reporter While a state formula for calculating its rates shows a decline in student dropouts, other statistics are giving some reason to question the accuracy of those numbers. "North Carolina’s dropout rates are based on a school’s total enrollment of K-12 students," Nance said last week. "The problem is, the formula they use (to calculate the rates) gives a lower percentage than you would probably find if you traced a grade all the way through from K-12. Studies show at least 25 to 30 percent of students will drop out of school before they graduate." Nance said the recent push toward higher testing standards could discourage some students from staying in school. "The testing could cause some kids who are on the borderline to drop out," Nance said. "It worries me that it could be a trend toward more dropouts." Elkin City Schools lost seven students during the 1999-2000 school year. According to Nance, seven students have left this year already and the final count cannot be determined until the 20th day of the next school year.
