I Inherited a Stamp Collection...
by Leonard Piszkiewicz This article could have just as easily been titled, "I just found some stamps in an old desk..." or "I found my old stamp collection up in the attic from when I was a kid..." or some similar theme. This is intended for someone who knows next to nothing about stamp collecting, has come into possession of some stamps and wishes to know what they are worth. As with all collectible items, stamps are worth what someone is willing to pay for them. Learning what that might be will require doing your homework. It is highly unlikely that you will instantly find someone who will give you enough for your retirement, but by searching through the philatelic world for the best place to sell your stamps, you could do very well. The first step in educating yourself should be to check your local public library for a Scott or Minkus (or other) stamp catalog. Check the catalog out from the library, take it home, and compare your stamps to the listings. Read the introductory paragraphs in the catalog to see how stamps' values are determined and how you should judge the stamps. Remember that stamp catalog values are for excellent examples of each given stamp and that stamps with heavy cancels or tears or pieces missing will bring much less, if anything at all. And remember that most unused stamps released since 1940 aren't worth much more than face value if you're trying to sell them; a lot of those you can use for postage. Also be aware that a dealer will likely pay less than half catalog value, since he has to make his profit margin and cover his expenses to stay in business selling stamps.

Millions of people all over the world collect stamps as a hobby, and the number is growing every day. It is indeed an exciting and rewarding hobby, and it can also be extremely profitable. The price of stamps vary with supply and demand due to the number of collectors increasing. The price of stamps is steadily rising, as the supply of stamps diminishes and more people want to acquire them. Most people start a collection for the pleasure and education just like any other hobby, but this hobby offers a financial reward as well, as collections experience a steady increase over the years. It is possible to start your own business if you are experienced, and already have a good size collection. For information about becoming a dealer, write to the American Stamp Dealer's Association 147 W 42nd Street, New York, NY 10036. HOW TO START: Some people very early in life collect stamps, it often begins as a gift of a small package of stamps given to a child, and the child becomes a collector for life. As the collection grows, some tools become essential: * Stamp album * Hinges * Magnifying glass and tongs They can be obtained from a stationary store or your local stamp dealer.

SPANISH NORTH AFRICA
The Philatelic Stamps Country
"Abandon every hope, who enter here"
(Inf. 03.009, by Dante Alighieri - a Sony Classical Artist) This site is dedicated to the most quickly progressing domain of the modern philately - the Spanish North Africa. The site is the place where the stamp collectors from the whole world can not only find the latest information pertaining to their hobby, but especially they can profit by an oasis of peace of mind, in the middle of their pairs. It is expected that all visitors will find good reasons to leave this site in high spirits; the newcomers should feel an irresistible desire to immediately start with the stamp collecting, at best of course with the renown SNA stamps. Spanish North Africa, contrary to popular belief, does in fact exist. The mostly accepted theory says that it can be found somewhere on the northern Moroccan coast of Africa, west of German North Africa, east of Minackars and north-east of Portuguese North Africa According to an alternative theory, some Scandinavian historicists, for reasons known only by themselves, have placed the Spanish North Africa near Iceland, a fact confirmed (in their opinion) by the cartographer Abraham Ortelius (as marked below by a red circle on one of his maps, dated 1570).

Jack Keller, creator of i The Winemaking Home Page /i , discusses stamp collecting and provides links to other related sites. stamp collecting.

    Stamp Collecting
Stamp collecting can be a most satisfying and educational hobby. But, given two stamps of the same issue, what makes one collectable and the other worthy only of pushing the mail to its destination? We'll look at those differences here by following one person's oddessy of collecting stamps from day one to three decades later. Along the way, I hope we'll all be fulfilled. Stamp collecting is a most satisfying hobby for me for two reason. First, because I am an historian and most stamps commemorate or represent some aspect of history. Second, because the artist in me can appreciate the often fine engravings and delicate colors of many stamps. I began collecting stamps as a young boy when my grandfather gave me a cigar box full of stamps he had soaked off of envelopes over the years. I thus began collecting used stamps and I just pasted them in a beginner's album I had gotten for Christmas. Gradually, in comparing my collection with those of other boys I knew, I learned that it was considered to be better to use stamp hinges to mount the stamps in the album. I didn't know why, but I bought some and discovered the stamps I had pasted in the album couldn't be removed to be hinged without ruining the stamps, the album, or both. I saved my allowance (25 cents a week) and bought a new, even larger album and started over. Somewhere along the line, I discovered that

Of interest with modern stamps is Sue Wickison, formerly a scientific illustrator with institutions such as the Kew Gardens in London, and now developing artwork that's showing up on envelopes. Sue's attention to detail and lively representation of nature's work has seen her gain assignments throughout the Pacific Islands including the Niue, Fiji, New Zealand, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. Sue is now based in Tonga. Whether you're an individual collector or a dealer, you should find helpful assistance from the Tongan Philatelic Bureau. 116. Philately - Stamp Collecting For Beginners
You have to look very close to see the tiny plate numbers on modern coil stamps. Other areas of stamp collecting for you to consider are TOPICAL collections
    http://www.edsmart.com/stamps/begin/begin.htm
    Question: What to collect?
If you're like most collectors, you try to get one each of all the stamps issued by a particular country. That is the "traditional" method. But a great many collectors have discovered the pleasure of collecting in non-traditional areas. Here are a few areas which appeal to me. What do you think?
Used BLOCKS Lightly cancelled Blocks are obviously more interesting to look at than singles. The older issues are not so easy to find which makes the hunt all the more challenging. When you do find them...you usually find a bonus...they are relatively inexpensive, compared to mint singles!
PLATE NUMBER BLOCKS Admittedly, plate blocks are a traditional area of the hobby. But consider collecting just a handful of issues and trying to get all four positions of every plate number used to print that particular issue! That will give you a different perspective on a traditional collection.
PLATE NUMBER SINGLES This is my favorite area to collect. I love the challenge of finding all the plate numbers used on a particular issue. I've spent quite a few years trying to get all numbers and positions of the C20-22 "China Clipper" issues. That was a lot of fun! (and yes, I got them all)
Plate number blocks can get expensive! Plate
