(Revised July 25, 2003)
I became a stamp collector soon after I moved with my parents and sister to the tiny village of Arenas Valley near Silver City, New Mexico. It had originally been called Whiskey Creek, apparently because once, after a heavy rain, whiskey barrels had floated down a nearby arroyo from a still upstream towards the Pinos Altos Mountains.
The name was changed when postal officials said that "Whiskey Creek" wouldn't look proper on a cancellation. So it became "Arenas Valley." That was appropriate, because arenas means sand in Spanish, and Arenas Valley was a very sandy place. They might also have chosen "Jackrabbit Valley," "Yuccatown," or simply "Tumbleweed" (or their Spanish equivalents). It wouldn't have mattered because most residents continued to call it Whiskey Creek. Today, Arenas Valley is a sad little bedroom community where most people seem to have forgotten the virtues of fresh paint and pulling weeds. It's hard to imagine that once there were lush orchards and neatly kept homes and gardens.

    Beginning stamp collecting
This article is about beginning stamp collecting. It talks about how to start and how to put an album together.
Cartoon characters that have been designed by children and holograms were just a few of the hundreds of stamps that were issued throughout the world in the year 1995. There were also special addition stamps to help commemorate the 50th anniversary of the United Nations. There were stamps that honored famous people. Some made to help us remember to protect the environment. There were dozens of others issued, with many different themes. An increase in postage rates led to a tremendous amount of new issues. In all, there were more than 200 new items during one year alone. These new items included stamps, post cards, and stamped envelopes. bodyOffer(30133) There was a group of 32 cent stamps designed by children that carried the message, "Kids Care About the Environment." About 150,000 children between the ages of eight and thirteen submitted designs for the stamps. The four that were chosen show ways to clean up the environment. Stamp collecting is one of the most interesting of all my hobbies. People will collect stamps for many different reasons. Some will just like to get stamps together and arrange them in an album. Still others will be interested in history, geography, and culture of the countries in which their stamps came from. Others are attracted to the stamps because of the many interesting subjects that are pictured on them.

The National Postal Museum celebrates the beauty and lore of stamps, showcasing rare stamps and covers from the Museum's renowned collection. Scheduling a Preservation Lecture

Stamp collecting can be fun and certainly easy. Collectors can build a collection around subjects that interest them. Do you love movies or rock and roll? Stars of both can be found on stamps. Are you a sports fan? You can probably find your favorite sport on stamps as well. People who love cats or dogs, trains, planes and automobiles can find their hobbies celebrated on stamps.
Some collectors specialize not on hobbies or topics, but on countries. Others may prefer to collect stamps and envelopes (known by philatelists as "covers").
The best thing about starting a stamp collection is how easy it can be. For one thing, even if you don't want to travel out of your house to start a collection, stamps come to you in the mail. Or, with a quick trip to the post office, you can see what stamps are currently available for sale. The postal service even sells

    QSL Stamps
Radio amateurs from all over the world exchange their QSL cards to confirm their radio contacts. To cut costs, they set up some sort of postal service. QSL cards are not sent by direct mail, but they are collected by local QSL managers, who sort them by country, and bring them to the regional or national QSL manager. Here, the QSL cards are collected to be sent in bulk mail to other regional and national QSL managers, and vice versa.

    Ernest Rutherford
Ernest Rutherford's family emigrated from England to New Zealand before he was born. They ran a successful farm near Nelson, where Ernest was born. One of 12 children, he liked the hard work and open air of farming, but was a good student and won a university scholarship. After college, he won another scholarship to study at Cambridge University in England a turning point in his life. There he met J.J. Thomson (who would soon discover the electron), and Thomson encouraged him to study recently-discovered x-rays. This was the start of a long, productive, and influential career in atomic physics. Rutherford eventually coined the terms for some of the most basic principles in the field: alpha, beta, and gamma rays, the proton, the neutron, half-life, and daughter atoms. Several of the century's giants in physics studied under him, including Niels Bohr James Chadwick , and Robert Oppenheimer Early on he found that all known radioactive elements emit two kinds of radiation: positively and negatively charged, or alpha and beta. He showed that every radioactive element decreases in radioactivity over a unique and regular time, or half-life, ultimately becoming stable. In 1901 and 1902 he worked with Frederick Soddy to prove that atoms of one radioactive element would spontaneously turn into another, by expelling a piece of the atom at high velocity. Many scientists of the day scorned the idea as alchemy. They stuck with the age-old belief that the atom is indivisible and unchangeable. But by 1904 Rutherford's publications and achievements gained recognition. He was an extremely energetic researcher: in the span of seven years, he published 80 papers.

    Now playing: Take On Me
This is where it all began, with the introduction of the world's first postage stamp by Great Britain in 1840. It quite appropriately depicted the reigning monarch, Queen Victoria. Nicknamed the "Penny Black", it started our hobby, coined by the French "philately" or "one who loves to avoid paying taxes." You see, back then it was usually the recipient of a letter who had to pay the fee (or "tax") to get his or her mail. The concept of a pre-paid method for sending letters was totally new back then. We take it for granted today. The major stamp collecting group in the US is the American Philatelic Society (APS). With 57,000 members, this organization is the largest group of its kind in the country. Membership offers a bimonthly magazine, The American Philatelist , as well as a wealth of services, including an approval and Internet sales division and an sales outstanding stamp insurance program. I am a life member of the society (LM #4501) and strongly encourage all philatelists no matter what your specialty to join.
