Welcome to the New Studio Oona
Our white roses in full bloom last Spring, with an iris and wild pink columbine.
It's Been a While
We moved to Central Illinois when I got a job opportunity I couldn't really refuse. We sold our house on the lake, and bought a 105 year old farmhouse.
I love our new house. Surrounding us on all four sides are farm fields, so there is at least one mile of nothing but corn or soybeans in the summer, and empty fields in the winter. This gives us a wonderful amount of privacy, and peace and quiet. Plus, since our house is surrounded by trees, there are probably hundreds of birds in the yard in the warmer months. We have a bunch of swallows living in our garage and barn year round, but in the Spring, we get a whole new set of migratory birds.
We have 2 1/3 acres here, so we have plenty of room to do whatever we want in the yard, and blessedly, all our neighbors have plenty of their own business to keep themselves fully occupied without having to worry about ours. This house is a challenge, but we have done some things to improve it, which are documented on my other site, Evanshire.

http://free.polbox.pl/w/witraze/english/historia.html
Main Menu Our company our works Services ... Links A little about history of stained glass... T he art historians cannot explain fully the origins of stained glass art. Even if, as some of them maintain, the beginnings of stained glass can be traced down to known in the Mediterranean region alabaster ornamental window openings in which sometimes pieces of color glass were mounted, there are not known transitional stages between these primordial forms and stained glass sensu stricto T he stained glass has appeared in architecture suddenly and already in its perfect form - artistically and technically as well. It has happened from the 10th to 11th century. About high standard of the art of stained glass speak well the oldest preserved fragments: the faces of Christ from Lorsch and Wissemburg. T he culminating point of the art of stained glass occurred in the times of building cathedrals. The artists of those days were able to discover fundamental truth that stained glass is above all the art of manipulating with light and color in an interior space. They possessed intuitive knowledge about how the colors change depending on variable light conditions and had applied this knowledge by placing windows with dominantly cold colors in the walls facing North and West and windows with mainly warm colors in eastern and southern walls. T A after some time, as the rational knowledge about the world has begun to extend over previous spiritual visions, the stained glass art has begun to loose some of its strength, luminosity and monumentality. The perfected technique of glass tinting has freed the artists, at least they thought so, of previous technical limitations. They had learned how to get few colors on one piece of glass. This skill caused that the grid of lead lines had lost its artistic meaning. The representative part has became more important for the artists. They have forgotten that the light is the very essence of stained glass art. During its decadent period (17th - 18th century) the stained glass windows lacking lead lines were painted with color enamels on color less glass. Quite often - this tendency has begun to develop during baroque period - the ordinary color glass was used for all windows in church in order to make interior lighted as much as possible.

Stained Glass Stained glass served three purposes in the Gothic Cathedral. It contributed to the beeauty of the building. It allowed more light to come into the worshipping space, (Remember: in the middle ages "light" was associated with God.) and finally, it served as a textbook for the illiterate congregation of the villages. The windows can be read just like a book and medieval villagers learned many biblical stories from the windows. Stained-glass making was at its height during the 1300's-1400's. The glass was made from river sand, beechwood, and potash. Colors were made by adding metal oxides that were fused to the mixture. The pieces were assembled like a large puzzle and held together by lead. The glass was held together by two methods: bar tracery or plate tracery. Bar tracery is where thin stone bars were used to form a decorative pattern within the window opening and then the glass was inserted into the pattern. Plate tracery did not use metal bars, but rather the masonry of the building to form the pattern into which the glass was placed. It is much like using a cookie cutter to make the patterns and openings.

©2004 Picture by R. Schneider E-mail Welcome to the fascinating world of British architectural antiques. On this website we have assembled photos and descriptions of some of our favorite architectural antique items from throughout England. For years we have traveled to the UK looking for sources of good quality pieces which will complement both existing and new architecture. What you will find on these pages is a sampling of our research. Not only do our customers benefit from the results of our searching as displayed here, but we also offer a complete shipping and import service. Our goal is to make the acquisition of these items as easy and comfortable as possible. Instead of you having to search through endless websites and then dealing with complex financial transactions, plus foreign shipping and customs arrangements, we do this for you. We are paid for our efforts by our suppliers, so there is no fee to our customers. Though we are based in the United States, we handle sales and deliveries around the world. We visit each company that we do business with in the United Kingdom, so we can assure our customers that they will receive what they pay for in a timely fashion. Our years of experience have taught us who the most efficient architectural antique and shipping companies are, and we feel confident that our knowledge will save you a tremendous amount of frustration.

Stained-glass windows have been admired for their utility and beauty since ancient Rome, when pieces of colored glass were assembled into patterned window frames. In Europe, the art of stained glass reached its height between 1150 and 1500, when magnificent windows were created for great cathedrals
Most of what is known about medieval stained-glass making comes from a twelfth-century German monk who called himself Theophilus. An artist and metalworker himself, Theophilus described in his text, On Diverse Arts , how he carefully studied glaziers and glass painters at work in order to provide detailed directions for creating windows of "inestimable beauty."

and A pplique A "stained glass" quilt can be made in several different styles and techniques. While it is possible to piece a stained glass quilt (especially if the shapes in the quilt are straight-edged) the more common technique is to use applique. Designing your own stained glass quilt can start with actual photos of real windows or from many patterns available in books and on the Web for making real stained glass. The same patterns can be used for making quilts. There are quilt books specifically for making stained glass quilts, too. The dark lines around the shapes in the quilt replace the "leading" (actually strips of lead or copper) which are found in real stained glass.
