Christ Church Anglican
(Episcopal)
Meaford, Ontario, Canada
34 Boucher Street East
The Anglican Parish of Meaford began in 1856 with services held once a year in Stephenson's Inn. In 1861 the congregation began building a frame sanctuary - Christ Church - and it was consecrated in 1862, having cost a total of $600. The present stone church was completed in 1876. To this day, its beauty has inspired those who have been its members and those who visit.
Services
Great to Humble
Fragment from Chichester Cathedral Special and unique memorial windows at Christ Church were the inspiration of the Reverend Harold Appleyard, Rector of the Parish during World War 2. Harold Appleyard, on leave from the parish, served as a Military Chaplain during the war years. He noticed shards of broken stained glass around bombed churches. He gathered fragments and received permission from local church authorities to have the glass leaded and returned to Christ Church as a memorial for Canadian men and women who served overseas.

What is the Michigan Stained Glass Census?
The Michigan Stained Glass Census, which began in 1992, is a statewide survey of architectural stained glass that is sponsored by the Michigan State University Museum. With the help of Volunteer Census Takers, the Census is locating, recording, and photographing stained glass windows throughout Michigan. The information collected by Census Takers is maintained in a computerized archive at the Michigan State University Museum. The Michigan Stained Glass Census is an ongoing project that focuses attention on a long-neglected portion of Michigan's cultural heritage. By researching and recording information about the origins, styles, and subject matter of architectural stained glass, the Census is creating an invaluable resource of visual and documentary material related to Michigan's social, religious, and art history. The Census is also encouraging individuals and groups to better appreciate and preserve the stained glass treasures in their own communities. Click on image for more information.

'Stained Glass' Decorations
This project produces decorations that look like stained glass that can be hung on any wall. This project is fairly easy to do for children ages about 7 and older. It involves permanent markers and requires a bit of patience. Young and old can get beautiful results. For an easier project with these patterns, skip down to the notes at the end of the page. This project is rated EASY to do. What You Need
  • Permanent magic markers with pointed tips, we usually use Sharpie brand markers in an assortment of colors - and black
  • Paper patterns; 1 per child
  • Small paper plates (about 7 inch diameter)
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Plastic Food Wrap
  • Tape
  • Ribbon for hanging, optional
  • Construction paper to cover the back, optional

How To Make It
Making the Decorations
Read all the directions before starting. As an overview, you'll be drawing the stained glass designs onto the plastic wrap, and then putting them onto foil-covered plates. This creates a beautiful sparkling decoration whenever light is shining on it.
Step 1 - Print Patterns
Choose the decoration you want to make. Download and print the pattern(s).

Stained Glass Window
This was a great craft and the melted crayon stained glass looked more real than using colored tissue paper. Some kids melted two colors together and the leaves looked like real fall colors. Parental supervision is recommended. This project is rated EASY to do. What You Need
  • Black construction paper
  • Wax paper
  • Crayons or crayon pieces in fall colors
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Iron ( requires adult supervision

How To Make It
  • I took black construction paper and cut it into 5x5 squares.
  • With two pieces of paper together, I traced a leaf on the top square and then cut out the leaf with the two pieces together. The squares will be solid around the edges with a leaf pattern cut out of the center
  • Next I shaved crayons, using the colors of fall leaves. Using a warm iron, we melted the crayon shavings between two pieces of wax paper. We then cut down the wax paper to fit between the two squares of construction paper.
  • To assemble the window, place one square of construction paper on the table and glue your wax paper

A biography of the PreRaphaelite artist and stained glass window designer Henry Holiday, with particular reference to his work in Cumbria (The Lake District). Photographs of several of his windows.
    http://www.visitcumbria.com/holiday.htm
    'Henry Holiday'
Henry Holiday was born on 17th June 1839 in London. In 1855, aged 16, he made his first journey to the Lake District. Throughout the rest of his life he was to make many more trips, often holidaying for long periods of time. In 1908 he designed his own home, Betty Fold, near Hawkshead. He often stayed at Brantwood , home of John Ruskin , who introduced him to Edward Burne-Jones . From 1872 onwards, he was a regular visitor at Muncaster Castle
Henry Holiday was a frequent visitor to the studios of Sir Edward Burne-Jones at his home in London, and Burne-Jones' influence on him can be felt in his work. At Burne-Jones' home aesthetic problems were discussed and exchanged by a group of artists, who pooled their ideas, and whose work had much in common. He died on April 15th, 1927, two years after his wife Kate (who did embroidery work for the William Morris Company Walker Art Gallery - Liverpool St Mary's Church - Rydal St James' Church - Buttermere Church windows in Cumbria

    Margaret Rope
They were cousins, born within 9 years of each other at the end of the nineteenth century and were active from the second to the eighth decades of the twentieth. To tell them apart, I have called them by their family nicknames: the elder, Margaret Agnes, was "Marga" and the younger, Margaret Edith (M.E.Aldrich Rope), "Tor". They were among the score or so women stained glass artists of the Arts and Crafts Movement and produced work that can be seen in many churches and other buildings in England, Scotland and Wales as well as in Australia, Canada, Italy, South Africa,

I laugh and tell everyone I'm a Goddess that escaped. Creating unique art, growing lush flowers, and raising llamas is what I do best. My husband, Jo, is a doctor, but is also an accomplished Magician, and a big part of everything that happens here. We offer a variety of lovely gifts and well-conformed, intelligent, healthy llamas. Antique glass - sheet glass produced by the process of glass blowing. It is widely considered the most beautiful of the whole range of coloured glass used in stained glass work. Despite the name, antique glass is not old, but it is made by the ancient process of blowing a blob of molten glass into a large elongated bottle shape and trimming both ends. The resulting cylinder is cut lengthwise and allowed to flatten and cool, giving it a unique variance in thickness with streaks, ripples and occasional bubbles. Cames (Calms) - strips of lead that hold together the different pieces of stained glass. Cartoon - working drawing of the design in the actual size of the intended stained glass piece. Cathedral glass - wide variety of machine-made, flat-rolled coloured glasses; frequently textured on one side. Examples include hammered, rippled, seedy, marine and double-rolled smooth. It is less expensive than antique glass and available in an extensive range of colours. Concrete matrix - mixture of concrete strengthened with the addition of metal reinforcing rods. This structure holds the thick pieces of glass together in the modern technique, Dalles de verre. It was developed because traditional lead cames were not sufficient to hold the thick pieces of glass together.
