Adventure Guide to Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
From the Adventure Guides series. These unspoiled islands lie at the southern end of the Caribbean chain and are just now being discovered by tourists. St. Vincent, with the oldest botanical garden in the Americas, is dominated by a huge volcano, its peak usually hidden in clouds. The Grenadines include Bequia, Mustigue, Mayreau and many other islands, each one a unique gem. Grenada, with its pristine reefs, is the source for a third of the world's nutmeg; the smell of spices is everywhere in the air. This guide is the best preparation for a visit to these islands, with full details on accommodations and restaurants, getting around, sightseeing, climate, history and geography. Activities covered include sailing, fishing, kayaking, diving, hiking, horseback riding and shopping. The book covers Grenada, St. Vincent, Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Tobago Cays, Mayreau, Union Island, Palm Island, Petit St. Vincent, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Regularly: $17.99

The political system is modeled after Great Britain who granted St. Vincent's independence in 1979. Bananas are the main export crops but unemployment (estimated at between 35-40%) continues to be a major issue. Further complicating the situation is a young population. With half of the populace under age 15, unemployment will no doubt remain a major problem. The poverty in St. Vincent has developed a unique political outlook the demands short-term results and frowns upon long-term initiatives and development programs.
