St. Lucia Tours Overview
St. Lucia is the sort of island that travellers to the Caribbean dream abouta small, lush tropical gem that is still relatively unknown. One of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, it is located midway down the Eastern Caribbean chain, between Martinique and St. Vincent, and north of Barbados. St. Lucia is only 27 miles long and 14 miles wide, with a shape that is said to resemble either a mango or an avocado (depending on your taste). The Atlantic Ocean kisses its eastern shore, while the beaches of the west coast owe their beauty to the calm Caribbean Sea.
In natural beauty, St. Lucia seems like an island plucked from the South Pacific and set down in the Caribbean. Its dramatic twin coastal peaks, the Pitons, soar 2,000 feet up from the sea, sheltering magnificent rain forests where wild orchids, giant ferns, and birds of paradise flourish. Brilliantly-plumed tropical birds abound, including endangered species like the indigenous St. Lucia parrot. The rainforest is broken only by verdant fields and orchards of banana, coconut, mango, and papaya trees.

St Lucia Wetlands: coastal jewel 2 January 2004 The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park is one of the jewels of the South African coastline. Located on the north-eastern coast of KwaZulu Natal, stretching from Kozi Bay in the north to Cape St Lucia in the south, the park was the first in South Africa to be declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco). The Park's uniqueness lies in its remarkable diversity, particularly its combination of a subtropical coastline and a classic African game park. It is South Africa's third-largest park, spanning 280 kilometres of coastline, from the Mozambican border in the north to Mapelane south of the St Lucia estuary, and made up of around 328 000 hectares of pristine natural ecosystems – including swamps, lake systems, beaches, coral reefs, wetlands, woodlands and coastal forests. The park takes in a 60 kilometre river mouth that creates a huge estuary, Lake St Lucia, running parallel to the coast and separated from the sea by the world's highest forested sand dunes. The lake is part of the St Lucia estuarine system, the largest estuarine system in Africa.

    ST. LUCIA
    COUNTRY PROFILE: St. Lucia
St. Lucia is the second largest island of the British Lesser Antilles. Located roughly in the center of the Windward island chain, it is nestled between Martinique to the north and St. Vincent and the Grenadines to the south. Castries, the capital city, is situated on the northwest coast and known for its magnificent harbor. St. Lucia, said to be named for the patron saint of the day on which it was discovered, has an uncommon heritage of mixed cultural and historical influences, including Amerindian, European, and African. St. Lucia was inhabited by the Carib (Amerindian) Indians when sighted by the Spanish in the first decade of the sixteenth century (see The Pre-European Population, ch. 1). Many believe that Columbus viewed the island in 1502; however, the sighting is not accepted by all historians. St. Lucia remained uncolonized until the mid-seventeenth century. Earlier attempts by the British in 1605 and 1638 had met with disaster; would-be colonizers were either forced from the shores of the island or killed by its inhabitants. The first successful attempt at appeasing the Caribs followed the ceding of the island by the King of France to the French West Indian Company in 1642. Permanent French settlement occurred in 1660, after an armistice had been agreed to by the indigenous population. St. Lucia, however, was not to enjoy a lengthy period of peace. Military conflicts among the Dutch, British, Spanish, and French, both on the European continent and in the colonies, resulted in St. Lucia's falling alternately under the control of France and Britain fourteen different times in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. During this period of constantly changing European alliances, both the British and the French sought control of St. Lucia for strategic purposes. The island's natural deep-water harbors afforded ready protection for military vessels and also served as an ideal location from which to monitor enemy military movements in the Caribbean.

The six mimids (mimic thrush family) found on St. Lucia. We are aware of no greater concentration of such closely related species in such a small area or on any other nearby island.
We made one trip to the Lesser Antilles at the east end of the Caribbean Sea.  If you are weak on geography, and aren’t sure which island is which, EnjoyBirds comes with full geographical look-up features—you can be looking at any range map, and you see a dot in the blue—click it and the program tells you the name of the island and its archipelago.  The one we chose was St. Lucia, for several reasons—several endemic species, small enough for people on the island to have a “small town” spirit, yet endowed with great natural beauty and historically rich resources.  This tiny island hosts six mimic-thrush species, shown at left, including the friendly Gray Trembler, photo below, right. The open porch, during tea, was frequented by Lesser Antillean Bulfinches, after crumbs. But they would quickly scatter when this rather larger visitor appeared. The bird would approach other birds while feeding, lowering its wings and trembling in a "submissive" posture. But please note the long beak and lean look. The trembler would then seize any food morsels available, and if necessary dispatch any competitor with a stab from its long, dangerous bill. What a mix of behavior strategies! "Hi, I am your harmless friend." then the sword. And I thought other mimids were aggressive (mockingbirds are, quite)!

European discovery of the island is somewhat vague, but it was probably discovered around 1500 by the Spanish explorer Juan de la Cosa. Requirements for a Locality Study
A part of the National Curriculum Programme of Study for Geography at all Key Stages requires that students to be taught about Places At Key Stage 2 this involves studying three localities . One should be the locality of the school itself, (containing the homes of the majority of the pupils in the school). The other two localities should be similar in size to the locality of the school. One locality should be in the UK and the other from a developing country. Many Primary schools in the UK study Castries in St.Lucia as the locality in a developing country. Whatever locality is chosen pupils should be taught:
