History of St. Lucia
St. Lucia's exquisite beauty and serenity belie a history marred by constant war and bloodshed. Even before the advent of the European conquest of the New World, St. Lucia had already been victimized by the ongoing struggle between bellicose Amerindian tribes for control of the island. The original settlers of the island migrated from the northeastern shores of the South American continent between 1000 and 500 B.C. These people were simple farmers and fishermen. Today, over 12 archaeological sites on the island bear witness to this ancient civilization. Remains of their culture consist primarily of domestic and ceremonial artifacts, ceramic objects and enigmatic cave drawings. By the ninth century A.D., the Carib Indians had begun to advance through the southern Caribbean islands. These fierce warriors also migrated from South America, but their rapid rise to supremacy was achieved in a relatively short time. When the first Europeans arrived, it was the Caribs who greeted them. These encounters were rarely amicable.

St. Lucia's political culture is patterned after British models and English remains the language of status, but French patois is spoken by 90% of the population. Boasting one of the most diverse economies in the Caribbean, St. Lucia—though still an agricultural economy based on banana production—manufacturing, construction, tourism, and modest mineral wealth combine to form a relatively solid economy. Sever drought affecting banana production and inattentiveness by the United States have rained on St. Lucia's economic parade. Emigration has also had adverse effects on St. Lucia as islanders leave in search of work.

Saint Lucia History and Culture
History The first inhabitants of St. Lucia were Arawak Indians, and later Caribs, who did not appreciate the British invasion of their island in the early 17th century; for some time they managed to successfully fend off colonization. In 1650 the French overcame the resistance and settled, completing a treaty with the Caribs in 1660. Over the next 164 years, the island exchanged hands 14 times between the French and British in an almost comical seesaw play of power. It was not until the 1814 Treaty of Paris that the British finally secured all rights.

LUCIA The Island of St. Lucia History of St. Lucia Things to Know Exploring St. Lucia St. Lucia's culture has evolved from the intermingling of the many different groups of people who have participated in its history. Each has brought different beliefs and traditions, all of which are reflected in the life of the island today. A visitor is likely to drive on the British side of the road to an Indian restaurant in a French town, greeted all along the way in Creole patois Here are a few thing to know about for your visit to St. Lucia.

RESORTS SPECIALS PRICE QUOTES CONTACT ... ISLAND INFO History of St. Lucia ST. LUCIA The Island of St. Lucia History of St. Lucia Things to Know Exploring St. Lucia St. Lucia was first settled by Arawak Indians around 200 A.D., though by 800 their culture had been superseded by that of the Caribs. These early Amerindian cultures called the island "Iouanalao" and "Hewanorra," meaning "Island of the Iguanas."
The history of the island's European discovery is a bit hazy. It was long believed that Columbus had discovered St. Lucia in 1502, but recent evidence suggests that he merely sailed close by. An alternative discoverer is Juan de la Cosa, a lesser-known explorer who had served at one time as Columbus' navigator. There are some indications that de la Cosa may have discovered the island in 1499, although there is also evidence suggesting that he didn't find the island until 1504. In any case, there was no European presence established on the island until its settlement in the 1550s by the notorious buccaneer Francois le Clerc, a.k.a. Jambe de Bois, or Wooden Leg. Peg-Leg le Clerc set up a fine little base on Pigeon Island, from whence he issued forth to prey upon unwitting and treasure-laden Spanish galleons. Around 1600, the Dutch arrived, establishing a fortified base at Vieux Fort.
The first attempt at colonization occurred just a few years later, in 1605. An unfortunate party of English colonists, headed to Guyana on the good ship Olive Branch, landed on St. Lucia after having been blown off course. In all, sixty-seven colonists waded ashore, where they purchased land and huts from the resident Caribs. After a month, the party had been reduced to only nineteen, and those were soon forced to flee from the Caribs in a canoe. A few decades later, in 1639, a second party of English colonists under Sir Thomas Warner also failed in their settlement attempt.

St. Lucia's History and Culture Since 1979 St Lucia has been a stable independent democracy within the British Commonwealth. But after a few days on the island you'll discover influences and nuances hinting at its colourful past. St Lucia was first inhabited by the peaceful Arawak Indians, but they were conquered by their old enemies, the fierce Caribs. Columbus navigator was the first European to discover St Lucia in 1499. Then the British came and in 1667 the French arrived. St Lucia was alternately British and French for the next 150 years, before it was finally ceded to the British in 1814. The war has left fortresses and relics behind. For example, Pigeon Island National Park and Fort Rodney. From the former British officers' mess, it is easy to imagine the cannons firing at French warships as they tried to slip past the fortified hilltop… You can also visit Morne Fortune, a site of a key battle, and Marigot Bay, once a vital wartime base and now a beautiful yacht haven. Diamond Falls and Mineral Baths, built by the French king, Louis XVI, to refresh and heal his troops stationed on St Lucia, are fascinating. As is historic Soufriere, the old French capital.

St Lucia "Paradise under the Pitons" St Lucia is a breathtakingly beautiful lush tropical paradise, lapped on the West coast by the warm waters of the Caribbean and dominated by the twin peaks of the Pitons which rise from the sea to a height of more than 2,400 feet.
The mingling of British and French influence evident on St Lucia reflects the long battle for power between those two nations over this charmingly scenic island. But despite its history of struggle and conflict, the general ambience here is one of serenity and relaxation. St Lucia retains a mix of influences including French, Creole and English, each of which contributes to its language, culture and cuisine.
A rugged coastline, interrupted here and there by pretty sandy coves, is dotted with flourishing bloooms of jasmine, gardenia and passion flowers; whilst the whole island is volcanic with sulphur baths and the world's only "drive in volcano" to discover.
With its changing landscape of towering peaks, dense vegetation, rolling hillsides and tiny fishing villages, St Lucia is stunning with a landscape amongst the most dramatic in the West Indies. “Benefits beyond boundaries” for Greater St Lucia Wetland Park
From 4 to 7 September 2003, the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park Authority (GSLWPA) organized a workshop at the World Parks Congress in Durban, to take stock of development, environmental and governance concerns and efforts to stimulate local development through tourism.
Established in 2000, the GSLWPA is made up of representatives of government, civil society and local communities. Their workshop brought together protected area managers, scientists and representatives from local communities. The meeting was a unique opportunity for social and natural scientists to jointly explore the challenges facing integrated conservation and development in the St Lucia World Heritage site and to engage in a dialogue with community representatives involved in such sustainable development programmes. To launch the GSLWPA’s new “stocking program”, the meeting was followed by the release of 2 Cheetah into the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park (GSLWP). The Cheetah had disappeared from the St. Lucia area around 100 years ago.
In his key note address, Francesco Bandarin, Director of the World Heritage Centre noted the pioneering work of South Africa in implementing the World Heritage Convention by integrating heritage conservation into the regional development. Kenton Miller, Chair of IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas, expressed his satisfaction with lessons that could be drawn from the experience in the GSLWP on how to deliver “Benefits beyond Boundaries” the theme of this year’s World Parks Congress.
