The Original Settlers
Since the establishment of the first permanent settlement in 1659 by the East India Company , the island has maintained a substantial and healthy population. The first settlers were primarily English, but there were also Dutch and Portuguese who increased the island's labour force by the importation of slaves from the East Indies and Madagascar. These were later augmented by slaves from the Gold Coast of Africa. From 1679, passing ships were 'taxed' one Madagascaran slave, and slaves were also brought in from Bombay and the Maldives. In 1806, the East India Company brought in 650 Cantonese slaves as gardeners, mechanics and builders: this accounts for the oriental appearance of some islanders. Following the abolition of the slave trade in Britain and St Helena in 1832 there was a further influx of Africans onto the island as Royal Navy ships captured the slave ships of other nations: the slaves were put ashore on St Helena for hospital treatment before returning to Africa.

ST HELENA C/imai~e.Although it lies within the tropics the climate of the island is healthy and temperate. This is due to the south-east trade-wind, constant throughout the year, and~to the effect of the cold waters of the South Atlantic current. As a result the temperature varies little, ranging on the sea level from 68 to 8~ in summer and 57 to 70 in winter. The higher regions are about 10 cooler. The rainfall varies considerably, being from 30 to 50 in. a year in the hills. There are no freshwater fish, beetles or shells. Of sixty-five species of sea-fish caught off the island seventeen are peculiar to St Helena; economically the more important kinds are gurnard, eel, cod, mackerel, tunny, bullseye, cavalley, flounder, hog-fish, mullet and skulpm. Inhabitants. When discovered the island was uninhabited. The majority of the population are of mixed European (British, Dutch, Portuguese), East Indian and African descentthe Asiatic strain perhaps predominating; the majority of the early settlers having been previously members of the crews of ships returning to Europe from the East. From 1840 onward for a considerable period numbers of freed slaves of West African origin were settled here by men-of-war engaged in suppressing the slave trade. Their descendants form a distinct element In the Challenger expedition reports, Botany, vol. i. (1885). in the population. Since the substitution of steamships for sailing vessels and the introduction of new methods of preserving meat and vegetables (which made it unnecessary for sailing vessels to take fresh provisions from St Helena to avoid scurvy) the population has greatly diminished. In 1871 there were 6444 inhabitants; in 1909 the civil population was estimated at 3553. The death-rate that year, 6~4 per 1000, was the lowest on record in the island. The only town, in which live more than half the total population, is Jamestown. Longwood, where Napoleon died in 1821, is 33/4 m. E. by S. of Jamestown. In 1858 the house in which he lived and died was presented by Queen Victoria. to Napoleon III., who had it restored to the condition, but unfurnished, in which it was at the time of Bonapartes death.

Subsequently, the East India Company resumed control until the collapse of the company in 1834 led to their inevitable withdrawal from St. Helena and the island became a British Crown Colony. With this transition the relative prosperity of the island vanished. Charles Darwin , who visited St.Helena in 1836 when homebound on the Beagle , remarked that A salvaged Brazilian Slave ship brought unwelcome visitors to St Helena - termites invaded the island, and have been a pest ever since, even forcing the reconstruction of the Castle in 1860. St. Helena remained a busy port of call for sailing ships until about 1870 when steam started replacing sail, and the opening of the

The island is 47 square miles (122 square km), ten and a half miles (17 km) long and six and a half miles (10 km) wide, consisting of steep, rocky terrain. Rising dramatically from the South Atlantic, the island has sheer barren cliffs intersected with deep valleys (locally known as guts) which slope steeply from the central ridges. There is little flat land and the island has no sandy beaches. The highest point on St Helena is Diana’s Peak (2.685ft, 818m.) On the higher central ground bush and semi-tropical vegetation is abundant. This changes to grassland and pastures before the terrain becomes drier and almost barren below an altitude of 1.600ft (500m). The only inland waters are small mountain streams, which occasionally dry up in the summer months The population of St. Helena is 5.000, mainly descendants of British settlers and east India Company employees and slaves from South Asian sub-Continent, the East Indies and Madagascar as well as Chinese indentured laborers.

Its area, including Madagascar and the other adjacent islands, is 30,097,000 sq km/11,620,451 sq mi, or three times that of Europe. It acquired fame as the place of Napoleon BONAPARTE's exile, from 1815 until his death in 1821, but its importance as a port of call declined after the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. Later legend, mentioned by Geoffrey of Monmouth, claimed that she was a daughter of British King Coel Godhebog, meaning "King Cole the Magnificent". Other versions of the legend mention Coel not as King but as dux (chief) of Camelodunum (Colchester). It should be noted that her legendary father is not the same as King Coel Hen, meaning "Coel the Old" and more recently called "Old King Cole".
